So i lately checked all zerg hotkeys and found that zerg doesnt use W Y or the button to the left of 1 (§ for me). while i couldnt fine a use for Y yet I made it a control group aswell as W and §.
I testes some stuff for example Nydus on W and § which kinda sucked Mutas there Infestors there but all didnt feel good.
What i did end up with is Y for nydus W for all my hatchers and § for all my larva inject queens.
This frees up control group 1 to 5 for me and leaves me behind with 6 creep/transfusequeens 7 evo chamber/spire 8 hatcherys 9 Larva queen 0 Nydus
I wonder what you guy think about this kind of hotkey setup

I switched backspace with W so i can actually use the hotkey ( cycle thru bases ). I need another hotkey tho so ill probably assign (~`) to infestors/baneling.
|
Oh wow.. didn't realize that "~" was a boundable key.. good to know.
Addressing your question, if that hotkey setup feels comfortable for you then by all means, use it =) It does sound nice having the extra hotkeys freed up.

Right now I use the standard hotkey set up. I'm thinking about switching over to grid hotkey, and having the control groups wrap around the grid.
So control groups would be, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, t, g, b, 6, 7, (probably won't be using 6,7 too often), which is wrapping around the qwer asdf zxcv
So on the keyboard grid, it'll all be compacted to 1234567 qwert asdfg zcxvb Which seems pretty compact to me. This is all theoretical so far, and personally I don't feel that I'm at the caliber of skill to which a change in custom hotkeys would help me to much...
EDIT: Didn't know `/~ was bindable. Could be modified to: `123456 qwert asdfg zxcvb

changing hotkeys helps at all levels atleast if it makes you more comfortable

i never thought about doing this!
I just put my finger on my keyboard in that configuration and found it to be extremely comfortable! now maybe i'll use more than 5 hotkeys
I was thinking: b,g,t = units (**just try with your hand right now: t>a>g>a>b>a**) 3 = all hatcheries (since that's what i'm used to 1,2,4,5,6,7 = queens (since i do the double tap for all queens to inject)
|
i never thought about the whole BGT thing i might try test but I dont think it would be too advantageous for me
|
I have Y set as an alternate to patrol. It comes in handy when mutas enter the game.
|
i made Tab the base camera key(used to be backspace), Q a hotkey for all queens and W for inject. I can just really quickly go tab q w click and repeat to do all my hatches. Its really fast since they are all in a row next to eachother.
I then made the spacebar key a hotkey to use for all my hatcheries when i need to build drones/units.
1-4 is for units

So far the only hotkey I've changed is Immortal to R but I'm definitely considering changing some stuff around, especially the Patrol hotkey, that shit needs to change.

proptip guys: instead of wasting a valuable key for backspace rebinding, rebind backspace to shift+spacebar. You are using shift anyways with the backspace method, so it's great!

If you are considering the switch, given the new front-end UI for hotkey customization, I recommend partially switching to grid and see how you like it.
You can get 98% of grid via standard "customized" setup. There are a scant few keys that will overlap and force different bindings (for example, cloak for ghost vs banshee can't both be grid setup via standard custom)

since i rebound it to tab and made q a hotkey and w inject i don't need to use shift since hitting those 3 buttons in a row is so fast anyhow. thanks for the tip tho

With the concept of going to grid and using the wrap around keys... the grid for the standard command hard is 3x5
qwert asdfg zxcvb
so if you wanted to use the hotkeys around the grid, it'd probably be more like
123456yhn7
I am a grid user and I am currently experimenting using this hotkey setup after going using grid with standard 1234567890
I currently use hatches on 1 and hatch queens on 2. army on 3,4,5 and i tend not to use 6 and 7.
9 is evo chambers 0 is nydus
but with the other setup, i could see it becoming a lot easier and i could actually move my hatchs to say Y and my queens to say H.
replacing spacebar with backspace... h->space->x->click->space->x->click... repeat for larva injects.
Only thing to get used to is not using spacebar to go to alerts. you actually go to minimap. sometimes this has been a problem and i have gotten disoriented as spacebar for last alert is a longtime habit.
EDIT: I just realized OP was saying that zerg does not have anything in those slots, as far as units to produce or buildings to build, he is correct, but the standard command card with move/stop/hold/patrol/attack will still use R and T

Wow, very nice idea! Thx to you, I've optimized my hotkey scheme
TILDE (Grave) hotkey = group 8 for something special, like nydus, overseer, or overlords for drops. ALT hotkey = shift for better adding queens and hatcheries to F1-F2 groups, but after new shift-space method, I've remapped all queens/hatcheries to mouse buttons. F3 - Idle worker Shift+Space - cycle camera through hatcheries. So I need now only press 1 time "Select larva injection" with holding shift, and "space - leftclick - space - leftclick - etc" Simply and easy!
|
Well I found the next setup good: 1. I use space for select all larvae hotkey. Since I use 4 for select all hatcheries space is perfect for this. 2. Then I put queens on 5-8 and use J and K for spawn larvae which is also much better then the default key.
