Possibly You: What does sexuality have to do with Video Games? I don't care if someone is straight or not, it just shouldn't be on an SC2 forum.
Well, no.
When you are a young, straight nerd, you dont feel like you fit in anywhere. You're taught, culturally, that being a nerd is looked down on, and simply wrong. It's cool to be cool with the cool people, but its wrong to want to spend your saturday night playing video games.
You ask questions like: If i talk, will everyone know that i'm a nerd? Will my friends still be my friends if they found out? Will my family love me? Am i less of a man, because im a nerd?
Being part of this minority is tricky. Before you have a chance to experience the nerd-culture, you dont have the tools to identify who is a nerd, and who is not. The only people who are nerds are the stereotypical nerds you see on TV, and the kid who gets beat up at lunch time because he wears glasses. We dont have any way to identify eachother. We don't have any way to indentify each other. We can't see the only other asian/white kid/wheelchair/fatty in our school and go "hey, we can join forces against haters and be without hate".
And the hate is a different kind too. Being a nerd is about what you want to spend all your free time on. Its a deviation from the social norm. When someone hates you for that deviation, you feel that you can't argue with them.
So then many of us tend towards a hobby or a lifestyle that will be inclined to bring us in contact with other nerds. We shy away from sports, we befriend noone, we learn to like computer programming; we become masters of Magic the Gathering.
But i like programming. I didn't get the MTG-gene. I like to have conversations about things that are interesting, not trivialities regarding how much mana a creature requires to be tapped.
I like strategy games.
So where do i find other nerds that has the same interests?
You've never seen a nerd in class. You've not seen any on the street (They're all hiding in their basement). You've never had a conversation with one, you've never even made contact (Nerds are very shy).
That sucks.
So i've created this thread for a few reasons.
1) For nerds to find other nerds that actually have something in common.
2) For nerds to ask questions. I have a lot of experience with nerdy topics and how nerds interact with eachother.
3) To create a following big enough, that we can have frickin' 23876 parades a year dedicated to straight nerds. Also, we want TV shows dedicated to us, as well as an official "Nerd Day". Anything less (and even if we get all that), and we should cry "FOUL!" and claim that we are not being treated like human beings.
Basically, i created this thread so we nerds can please our attention whoring about something completely irrelevant to the gaming community (Or any other community for that matter).
