I was watching a comedic review of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace on youtube, one that I've seen before but came back to watch again because it was just so hilarious ( if you haven't seen it, here it is), and towards the very end, the reviewer has a touch of seriousness to his comedy. It struck me out of nowhere that it shares almost the same feelings that a lot of people, including myself, have of SC1 compared to SC2.
While being a comedic review, it still holds a ton of respect and admiration for the first 3 Star Wars films and how amazing they are.
The quote I'm referring to is at the very end, the 7th part of a 7 part review:
"[in reference to Episode 1: The Phantom Menace] It ends up all looking so clean and sterile, and it lacks humanity. It lacks grit. The Phantom Menace also makes you wonder: With total control on every aspect of the film, from the writing, to directing, to casting, etc., this was the result? Then when you hear tales of how Luke was supposed to be a 65 year old man with a robot head, Han Solo was supposed to be like a frog, and C3PO was like a slimy used car salesman-type, you have to just wonder.. what-if? What if Lucas had the kind of control back then that he has today?"
I'm not saying SC2 is a horrendous game, I'm not saying all of the things that so many people argue endlessly about on these forums.. I play SC2 a lot, but sometimes.. I just really miss BW. I miss the same things about BW that the new Star Wars films are missing from the old ones.
