Among all those groups, the most anticipated definitely were groups A and F. Boxer did a fine job in group A and everyone was hoping Nal_rA could do the same, qualifying for his first Starleague since Gilette. Let’s see what happened!
--
Group F: Nal_rA (P), Clon (Z), Yooi (T), Ggon (R)
Game 1: Nal_rA (P) vs Clon (Z) on Forte
rA top right, Clon bottom right.
rA went forge first to fast exp while his opponent opened with pool/expo and teched to lurkers. Clon tried to use the lurkers to harass the gateway protecting the early canons, but too bad for him, rA had spotted the hydra den with a zealot and got obs pretty early, allowing him not to take any signifiant damage.
The Dreamer Protoss played a defensive game and succesfully defended against every threat, including drop attempts and an hydra/ling combo attack on his canon line. He was then powering out of 3 bases (as much as Clon) and had teched to reavers in the meantime. His mixed army of goons/zeals/templars/reavers went out twice, the second one being deadly to Clon. A solid, very solid game from rA.
rA > Clon.
Game 2: Yooi (T) vs Ggon (P) on Forte
Yooi top left, Ggon bottom right.
Yooi opened with 1 fac CC, Ggon with classic gate/core before teching to reaver drop. The drop didn't do much damage (a few scv kills though while the reaver/shuttle survived). Yooi then successfully harrassed with vultures, managing to wipe out every single probe at Ggon's nat, and took a clear advantage. A few minutes later, he went on the offensive and literally rolled over everything with his tanks/vultures army. Ggon looked to be controlling the game but failed at defending against harassment, costing him the game.
Yooi > Ggon.
Game 3: Nal_rA (P) vs Yooi (T) on Ride of Valkyries
rA bottom left, Yooi bottom right.
rA had to play vs Yellow in Snickers Starleague just after Dual, and looked like he wanted to make it quick. That’s maybe why he attempted to canon/zeal rush Yooi after secretly building a forge and gateway at 4, position of Yooi’s second natural. But the terran player remained ice and didn’t panic at all, allowing himself to successfully defend with a perfectly-placed bunker behind his wall, along with a few scvs repairing.
rA then proceeded to expand to the center island while Yooi made a few vults before getting his nat. rA harrassed a bit with DTs in the meantime but didn't manage to delay the nat for a signifiant amount of time. Probably still wishing to end the game as soon as possible, he then opted for... carriers. Canon/zeal rush to DTs to carriers, sigh. Too bad Yooi, who had already faced almost every possible gay strat that day, spotted them in time and immediately started pumping gols. It was obvious at that point that rA didn’t have much ground resistance at his nat, which is most likely the reason why Yooi immediately started a fast push towards it... and took it out.
From that point Yooi kept making more and more goliaths and started to expand all over the map, while constantly harrassing and killing rA's nat over and over. Despite some templars and a few carriers, the protoss player couldn't do anything against such unlimited assaults and conceded the game with a disappointed look on his face. Nice scouting/timing/decision making from Yooi, who gets the 1st ticket to second round.
Yooi > rA.
Game 4: Ggon (T) vs Clon (Z) on Ride of Valkyries
Ggon bottom left, Clon bottom right.
Ggon went 2 rax to fast CC, Clon opted for lurks/lings. And well... it looked like Ggon was dominating a lot, winning every single fight (sometimes with very good micro, which tends to be unusual for him), expanding several times on the left part and making an awful lot of vessels. But Clon had a few expands too and kept the macro up. In the end, ultra-lings were everywhere and raped. I don't quite understand what actually happened, but I'm pretty sure Ggon had LOTS of unused minerals at the end. Anyway, he proves again he’s definitely not on par with the top players, losing two games he was controlling.
Clon > Ggon.
Game 5 : Nal_rA (P) vs Clon (Z) on Forte
rA top left, Clon bottom right.
Alright, same players as game 1, same map too... looking good for rA, isn’t it? Anyway, after failing to pull off a fast win vs Yooi, the Art Toss (how many nicknames does he have by the way? Dreamer Toss, Flower Toss, Art Toss...) had to win that game at all costs and didn’t attempt anything unusual this time, going for the exact same build as in game 1. Problem being, Clon didn’t.
After desperately failing everything in their previous encounter, the Hanbit guy switched his plans and went for early mutalisks. Yeah, *very* early mutas. Just a tiny little too early for rA actually... and it was disastrous. rA had one corsair and canons still warping at his expo when Clon’s 6/7 mutas were already showing themselves. It was already over. Clon got rid of the corsairs and forced rA to cancel the canons, then went for the main, leaving him no other choice but to type out.
Clon > rA.
We won’t see Nal_rA in the next Starleague. That’s quite a big disappointment actually, but mensrea’s favourite is slowly getting back to his former shape anyway, that’s for sure!
Yooi and Clon get the last spots for ODL round 2!
