To start off, the campaign was great. I played on casual, because I'm a pussy and I 25-0'd it. I didn't get all research, or all objectives, or even tried that hard, but the story was great and I can't wait for Heart of the Swarm. I won't spoil it for you, but what happened was really surprising, to be honest. It does make me sad that the campaign's going to be released in parts, but it was worth the 80 bucks for this part. Anyway, on to multiplayer.
In general, the multiplayer is actually quite balanced, in my eyes. I can talk about Protoss and Terran only MU's, but so far most of my games have been lost or won based on skill and not one particular unit being overpowered. As an example, I've played four ZvP's so far. I've lost two and won two. The first one, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, and that showed, because I lost in under 10 minutes to what might have been a 3 or 4gate push. Which, by the way, is not overpowered. Just really hard to defeat and still remain in a viable position.
For reference, I'm (so far) a 40-60 point Silver, having won 11 games and lost 12.
So, now I'll detail the various match ups and what I think of them:
Zerg vs Terran
Definitely my favourite match up so far, which is the complete opposite of what it was in Brood War. Now that mutalisk control is actually doable by me, I've found that I'm winning more ZvT's than I'm losing, which is great. I can really punish Terran if they move out and are in a bad position with ling surrounds and muta harass, but at the same time if I let them expo and macro up, I'm utterly fucked.
Since the majority of people play Terran now, it's a good thing my ZvT is my best MU. But on to...
Zerg vs Protoss
This match up is... odd. I find it hard to play now, since my favourite unit from BW - the hydralisk - is pretty much outclassed by most other zerg units, except when P goes void rays. But the two games I've won were from early/mid-game pushes with roach/lings, and roach/ling/hydra/muta. As an example, I will detail what happened in my latest ZvP.
Map was Xel'Naga Caverns. Starting build was 14pool, 15gas. I got a few lings to deter any kind of cannon rushing, then got a roach den. At about 19-20 supply, I expand and I see my overlord at his ramp is being attacked by a stalker, so I rush up with four lings and three roaches and take out one zealot and one stalker, losing only one ling and, unfortunately, the overlord. However, I was not worried, only a little supply blocked. I poke up the ramp to see a cannon, and three warpgates. I think, 'Oh my, three warpgates? Better prepare for the worst,' so I start to produce more roaches than drones. He pushes out with a few stalkers and sentries and I pull back my lings/roaches to my nat.
A few minutes later, I'm at 80 supply, so I send a scout up to his nat, which he has secured. I see not that many units, just some zealots, a few sentries and stalkers, so I think, 'maybe he's not so good. Time to attack!' So, I do attack. Out of the blue come a whole heap of zealots/stalkers, three void rays and two collosi, which I promptly focus fire down with my hydras and roaches, and he gg's and leaves the game.
After that win, I was absolutely stoked at what I'd done. Not that it was anthing special, but the fact that I won a ZvP at all was amazing for me. But theres that, so, moving on...
Zerg vs Zerg
Woooh, boy. This MU is definitely my worst, without a doubt. I think I've won maybe one or two ZvZ's, mostly due to blind build order luck. Theres just so much more in this MU at any level than the other two. Do I make drones or units? When do I take that second gas? Should I make roaches or mutas, or even hydras? That sort of thing. Personally, I think that Zerg is overpowered in Zerg vs Zerg, but that's a given.
I just can't wrap my head around all the things present in ZvZ than in ZvP, ZvT. I wish there was some way to pick what match up you wanted before searching for a game, but I guess I'm just going to have to learn ZvZ better than what I do now. Which is to say, barely at all.
In closing, just want to say HI ALL SUP DOIN
Thanks for reading that huge ass wall of text, if you did. If not...
