Learning to read/speak Korean would be a huge improvement to their casting. Not that I want to take John's job away or anything but it would make the interviews much more fun and get to see the human side of the players more.
I also agree with what most of the OP said, especially knowing current events in the scene, maybe they could hire someone to fill them in on stuff like that, like a behind the scenes information guy giving bios of all the players, latest team moves, who eliminated who etc.
They also take some joke memes way too far, like Clide and dropping the supply depot near the gas (luckily they stopped the latter).
That being said they are one of the main reasons I watch the GSL so don't change anything too radical!

Why not tell the koreans to learn to speak English, the more popular language? =/

The more popular language in Korea is Korean.

Artosis needs to stop trying so hard for that Kleenex sponsorship he's after.

God so many useless criticisms. There is only one dealbreaking problem. It's the fucking camera. I can tune them out if they suck at commentary. I watch Korean casts and I don't have any idea what they're saying but that's alright. The camera pans over beautifully on upgrades when they upgrade, on harass when it's going on and on battles when one is happening. I understand the game based on what I'm seeing and the Korean obs is amazing for that, I don't even need commentary. GSL? I'm pained every single time I watch a cast because the obsing is so goddamn awful that I wish I could watch the Korean VODs.

A course in news broadcasting would be helpful, ie. how to effectively change your tone of voice in certain parts of the sentence.
Jason Lee is the master in this and is everyone else in the news business.

I think they do a terrific job. Of course there are things they could improve on, but I feel that it's about as good as you can realistically expect. Artosis does harp about Zerg too much in my opinion, much like he did about Terran in SC1, he's completely bias towards his race, and it's fine because I know that, but I would like for him to be more neutral some of the time. That's a complete nitpick though because I love listening to all their casts.

These guys are the only reason I subscribe to GOM. They are hilarious, they make high level games accessible to noobs like me, and they are informative. Everybody gets things wrong. People can sit in their armchair criticising, but take a look at almost all the other casters/combos out there. The only one that even rivals these guys is Day9/DJWheat, and they don't even have close to the chemistry that Tastosis does.
Everybody can improve, and I'm pretty sure they're self-motivated to improve already, with plenty of other people giving them advice rather than random no-name forum-goers like you or I.

Dont label yourself as insignificant or unimportant they have responded very positively to threads like this in the last couple of months and used it to improve.
And yes they are great.

If you're going to be a jackass, at least give decent support to what you say. Your NFL analogy makes no sense, either. We don't need Negative Nancies on TL if they're not going to justify their opinions. Show nested quote +On November 24 2010 10:56 Hurfdurf wrote: You want him to disagree for the sake of disagreeing? They were friends before they commentated together and it makes sense that good friends would generally agree even when they're not in front of an audience. There's a difference between disagreeing for the sake of doing so, and presenting an alternate perspective on something. The OP isn't suggesting that Tasteless contend random Artosis-isms for no reason, only that he present his own opinion on the matter if it happens to clash with what Artosis says. This is linked to the OP's wish that Tasteless prepare better for the matches; as Tasteless gets more comfortable at analyzing the matchups, he'll be able to discern for himself whether he thinks Artosis is on the money or not.
Your assuming that them being more professional would increase everyone's enjoyment, which is an ignorant statement. I' ve stated in other threads that one of the reasons I enjoy watching the GSL specifically Tastosis because of the laid back carefree nature. I would rather watch someone like that then for them to come dressed up in suits and ties. A less professional setting is more enjoyable for me to watch. Maybe you and op would appreciate a pre-game or post-game show where the evaluate the match ups more in depth with longer discussion and analyzing of players and what not.

I actually agree with this , their personality and how they cast is just fine, and honestly either way it goes there will be people that like/hate it.
But seriously if you watch the gom cams it's so so much better than Tastosis, it's not even close. Almost every game Tastosis would be really late or even entirely miss things like upgrades and expansions , sometimes even drops and battles. And these are just the more obvious/basic stuffs. Not to mention the more subtle stuff like whether an aggresor is all-in (whether he's still building workers) etc etc. It's really bad when BOTH of em totally missed such things and on a pretty constant basis.

I used not to like them, but they're my favourite casters right now. Some thoughts:
- It's great they're trying to qualify for every GSL, it shows their passion and dedication to StarCraft. The fact that Artosis made it in the first GSL made me feel good about his gaming knowledge. - They're really funny, it makes even boring match entertaining. Thankfully it's not over the top funny, just right imo. - Tasteless can be pretty clueless at times. Mistaking SCV as Marine, Protoss player as Zerg, etc etc. I dunno if that's because of his eyesight or he's generally not meticulous. - Need to learn a bit more Korean if it's going to be their permanent job. - Need to be more up to date about the movement in esports. Example, they thought Jys (SlayerS_Mio) was clanless, Genius's change of clan. - They've stopped advertising their own team, it's great. - They have been very good sport lately, no more 'yeah go go go foreigner, opposition must lose' attitude. - Just keep improving casting ability, I heard yesterday some people choose to switch to the Korean casters because Tastosis missed some great battles in sCfOu v Lyn matches. - Need to take better care of their health. In every GSL it's either Artosis or Tasteless getting sick.

I still wish they had a person dedicated to controlling the game camera. I think the casting and obsing quality suffers when Tasteless has to do both.
|
Good OP, mirrors my own thoughts basically. Well except I wouldn't quite classify them as awesome. They can improve so much while maintaining the laid-back nature that many find so lovable.
I really think Tasteless needs to improve the most out of the two, he does ok pointing out what is going on onscreen or cracking a joke every now and then, but the vast majority of the time he is just agreeing with Artosis. Or he says something silly and Artosis will pause for a second and either agree to it in a tone which clearly says he doesn't agree at all, or ignore it and move past it awkwardly.
But yeah a lot better than season 1 already, but a lot more they could improve.

How do you watch the korean casts? Could someone help me? It would actually make my experience a lot more enjoyable =p

Tasteless needs to not miss so many key parts of the game while observing. So many times he will move over to a drop that's already finished. Or completely miss a tech structure being placed (such as an armory). Also the camera movement just seems way to jerky.
Their commentary is not a problem for me just the camera issues that need adjusting.
|
Perhaps they could get John the Translating Templar to control observation? Not sure what his duties are during the games themselves. I have a feeling he's supposed to tell people behind the scenes if they need to censor Tastosis for whatever reason, like a live mental breakdown. Think Bill O'Reilly. If that happens on air they obviously need someone who can translate what's going on to the rest of the staff. ^_^
