I kind of wish they went a step further in the "no unmounted handheld devices" law in my province. Sure, holding a phone/gps/whatever is illegal while driving, but it doesn't really solve the core problem. For example, having the hold the phone in 1 hand is a problem, yes, but it's not the main problem. The problem is divided attention, which you still do when you're using your wireless earpiece anyway.

Just don't be an idiot. Pull over if you know you're going to be distracted, whether it be phone, restless kids in the back seat or anything else.

it's a peeve of mine. if you're in a car with someone doing it, speak up because it puts your life directly in danger. i think i finally got my sister to stop, but her cellphone addicted peers still have me pretty worried.

I think its pretty stupid to text and drive, though on a rare occasion I will admit to being guilty. Normally just reading a message that I just received, but I wont respond. When I'm parked in traffic sometimes I will send a message, but its still dumb cause I know how easy it would be to hit some ones bumper and then be out $800.

No, I don't believe the cyclist was texting.

You need to check the airway before breathing/circulation, even if the patient was talking moments before.

Anyway, it's a sad story. I hope the text message was reaaly important.

Always very cool to read "on-the-job" things like this, thanks.

And honestly, I don't think people understand just how dangerous driving is. You're in a 4000 lb piece of metal going 60 miles an hour mere feet, sometimes inches away from other 4000 lb pieces of metal or solid cement walls. To text while driving just seems.. disrespectful, somehow. I know this sounds like a bunch of superstitious bullshit but respect the dangers of the road, dammit.
