I come from a huge Nationalist family. Now, they are very conservative, and me I chose to rebel against their political beliefs, and beliefs in general. The one that they do that not only offends me, but also sickens me is that they will sit and openly make fun of gays, blacks, and Muslims. I have several friends who are Muslims that I met when I was in college, and we still talk to each other. I just can't be around my family whenever they start openly making fun of the Muslims people. I always think to myself "What if one of my friends are right here in the room?" Black people are a different story all toghether, but my family will openly make fun of black people. Our President happens to be black. I have friends who are black. I don't judge someone by the color of their skin, but by the content of thier character. And gays. My family thinks that gays shouldn't walk the earth. I know a lot of gay people, and I am friends with gay and lesbians, and transgenders. I love people from all walks of life. It's just hard for me to sit in a room whenever my family starts making fun of these groups.
This wasnt actually written by me, as i found it on another blog, however i exchanged a few words here and there to make it fit better to my situation. But yeah .. Ugh, so much rascism here in Denmark :/ I could leave this country if i knew something good was waiting on the other side.

As long as there are more people in the new generations like yourself, who will learn to judge by more than race, i am sure that there will be less racism everywhere around the world in times to come
try not to let the haters influence you too much, and in doing so you might have to play along sometimes; you don't want that type of people angry at you. Just stick true to your own principles and your life will be that much more fulfilling.

what a terrible family...imo people should either just be accepting of others, OR just not care about others...going out of their way to put people down, in many cases for things that the people cannot control such as being born with a different colored skin is just plain wrong and a crime against humanity itself imo...
just try not to become a hater, and try to convince people that its not a good idea to BE a hater, and some day there will be less haters ^__^

That sucks. I feel like I take the liberalism of my own parents for granted. Still, I'm very glad that you've had the intelligence and clarity to see past your upbringing and respect people. With luck you'll pass that onto your children and the problem will solve itself over time.

wtf if you actually know a transgender that's pretty cool (no seriously a person who is willing to change their entire body figure has to have an interesting personality, i'm not trying to be a dick or anything). anyway your family is probably old and still living in the past but hey you can't do anything about it, once you leave you'll be free from all of the negativity. and a lot of what navi said is such great advice, this is why i love TL, many good people with great advice / opinions and shit in general. i don't understand why people are so angry towards gays, for they have been in the world for much longer than they can imagine =(
keep your chin up and just i know this will be hard, because i was told to do this too and i had a VERY tough time to do it but you're just going to have to IGNORE all of it until you can be free from all of it.

Thx all, maybe i forgot to say that im already free from it. I dont have to listen to them every day. I just pay them a visit 2 or 3 times per year, and thats fine =)
And they are not living in the past. The hating of different minoritygroups in Denmark is a trend that is growing stronger and stronger. The hating isnt comming from official sources but from the buttom / the people. Some people, not all ofcourse.

Hey, the good news is that your educated enough to stop believing and doing the ignorant stuff your parents did. You definitely need to pass this on to your kids

Can't change people or the world. You just gotta be as open minded as you can be. That also means being open minded towards those who are ignorant and negative. Don't let your opinions and personal beliefs dictate the way you feel about others.

No, clearly he meant the world president, Barrack Obama. ^_^
I think they suffer from what my in-laws, and to a lesser degree my own family do - older generation ignorance. They grew up in different times than we did, just remember that. It's by no means an excuse, but a truth about views that many from the older generation have no desire to change. As bad as it sounds, you can't really force non-biased views on them (in the same way you can't tell a gay man to be straight); I think it honestly won't be gone until that mentality literally "dies" out.
