I'm pretty sure this was posted a few times, but Moon was possibly the most epic film ever. And it didn't even seem like it was an expensive film to make. Just a really mind-blowing story. Def recommended.
The Prestige was also quite amazing. Also, another posted one.
The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Decent movie that you'll like if you enjoy films about love and stuff.
The Girl Next Door - This film looked stupid at first when it came out. I checked it out one bored day.. and it was pretty cool.
I definitely will check out some of the films posted here. Also will update if I find more!
I don't know if this was a surprise and i'd bet it's already been posted, but I found "Brick" to be a very good movie. It's kind of confusing and hard to follow at times but it's got a nice pace and is real interesting. Check it
I just watched a great documentary called The World Without US. It explores what might happen if the United States were to leave the international arena, rescind its global reach and become an isolationist nation. The filmmaker also goes around the world asking citizens how the US is viewed. I was very surprised by this and everyone should check it out.
Guys, I just finished watching the most powerful documentary I've seen. By the end of it I bursted into tears. If it doesn't win the oscar for best documentary next year I'm going to be very surprised.
I saw this recently, don't know if most would consider it a 'hidden gem', since Nicholson stars, but I for one hadn't heard anything of it until I saw it on Jack's wikipedia page. 'Five Easy Pieces'. The movie gives an interesting and moving perspective on humans. The whole movie - directing, plot, acting, themes examined - is incredibly well done.
edit: +1 for Moon; that I would definitely call a hidden gem. Great story and again insight into humanity.
I just watched this film. Oh man, I've never really felt emotional after watching a movie and I nearly teared at the end. Incredible film, please go watch it. You won't be disappointed.
Mr.Brooks pretty much gave me a shock, I was expecting it to be rather crappy(Partly because I'm a bit biased towards Mr.Costner), but it's just really good.
"Doctor Strangelove:" Stanley Kubrick, so I guess I can't say it's unknown, but it's black and white, which I think causes a lot of people to over look it. Black Comedy set during the cold war. Peter Sellers plays multiple roles, lots of classic lines. Smart and funny at the same time.
ok there's saying something might be not 'unknown' then there's calling a movie like that a hidden gem
"In 1989, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry"
"The film was nominated for four Academy Awards and also seven BAFTA Awards, of which it won four."
"In addition, the film won the best written American comedy award from the Writers Guild of America and a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation. Kubrick himself won two awards for best director, from the New York Film Critics Circle and the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists, and was nominated for one by the Directors Guild of America."
but yeah kids these days might not watch old classics so fair game i guess this is turning into name a good movie thread anyways
either way you have to watch this movie to understand all the references that come from it.
Had to watch this in Computer Science a couple of years back when I was in High School. It was surprisingly good imo.
oh. my. god.
thank you for reminding me, this was my favorite movie for a while when I was like in... middle school?
I know some people will absolutely freak, but I walked into this movie expecting stupidity and blood and gore, but was unbelievably blown away by the cinematography and surprisingly great finish of this movie:
also, this movie was really, really, really great, despite how little it must have cost (lol), I was NOT expecting to love this movie as much as I did. EVERYONE should watch this movie if you've got half a brain.

Indeed an awesome movie, but 2 facts: Nominated for 7 Oscars and it is the only movie on IMDB with a higher rating than "The Godfather" Not what I'd call hidden :D
A very good example to point out differences between germany and austria and how they are different. Watch only if you are either interested in austria or know german very well. That's also the reason why this movie is so popular in austria.

but yeah fucking awesome movie SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION
Yup. Well, for those less into older films, SR is quite obscure. However, it is definitely a good film about intellect, morality, and overall the true nature of each individual.
