Wow... Holy fucking shit. Just watched The Man From Earth with my grandfather and the movie had us both completly mesmerized. The storytelling is sooooo good. 10/10 movie.

Yes it was breathtaking, even though the whole movie took place in a small cabin, it was the best movie i've seen in a long long time.

Hmm I've already watched a couple of films recommended in this thread and I must say that they were all pretty awesome - thus I will watch even more films and blindly trust in TL that they will be good!

Letters from Iwo-Jima was a good war movie as far as I can see. Really got me thinking and left an impression instead of just entertaining.

Pan's Labyrinth is totally awesome and i really really love that movie. I know it is not a hidden gem, but it sure as hell is worth your time. I really like the thought that went into the plot, the setting the characters. I think this movie is very good for everybody who likes a great atmosphere and intelligent movies.

Princess Mononoke is one of my alltime favourites, I really adore the fantastic setting and the plot as well as the morality and the conflicts in it

Moon was a very interesting movie, too. Extremely well done for such a low-budget production imo and well deserving of being named in this thread. I really liked how the story unfolded and slowly became deeper and depressing, shocking and tought inspiring.

However, I do not get why people are blown away so much by The Man from Earth. Sure, the movie had its moments and an interesting idea behind it but what they did with it was pretty meh imo. There was a lot of potential but a lot of it was waisted. First of all the characters in the movie seem kind of random - some were pretty useless, some seemed totally unfitting of their role. The talk was interesting for the most part. All that stuff about philosophy was pretty good and the reason why this film was any good. I think the right questions were asked - like: + Show Spoiler +
"what is your motivation" "can you love" "how does it feel to survive - do you feel guilty?" "do you wish you were normal"

But that interesting stuff was talked about too little. I think the film gave away a lot of its potential by digression to historical facts and the back and forth about the conviction of the listeners. The movie did not care about biological points of view, because it was not the point. Then why did they deal with the question whether the others believed him or not? That was repeated way too often considering it was actually not the point of the film. And the historical parts were just boring - not that I don't like history (I love it) - but really all they talked about were facts everybody knows already or historical developments that the film did not deal with any further -
+ Show Spoiler +
aside from the Jesus-thingy

.

I liked the movie after all because of the philosophical questions that it brought up. A lot of intrinsic stuff about existance, how you feel and think about it when you have gotten rid of certain limits. But it was not mindblowing at all because that interesting part was too small compared to the (from a moviemaker's point of view) pretty much useless historical stuff and the talk about believing the story. 7/10 imo

Still watch it, maybe I am just too critical...

Great films - this thread rocks!

Unbreakable surprised me. I never really heard of it until I saw a video of quentin tarantino where he lists his top 20 movies (not in a specific order though).
Now that I come to think of it, he also listed Battle Royale which I watched before and is a pretty cool. It also is kinda unique.
Another movie that totally captured me is Ghost in a Shell (part one mainly). I didn't expect to see such a fine movie in anime style back then. Usually I don't like it that much, but this movie simply is fantastic.

I really hate my memory I'm absolutely sure that I watched many not so famous movies that are worth to remember, but I just cannot
When they were introduced, he made a witticism, hoping to be liked. She laughed extremely hard, hoping to be liked. Then each drove home alone, staring straight ahead, with the very same twist to their faces.

Samson and Delilah

Samson and Delilah's world is small- an isolated community in the Central Australian desert. When tragedy strikes they turn their backs on home and embark on a journey of survival. Lost, unwanted and alone the discover that life isn't always fair, but love never judges.

If you want something very different then I recommend Samson and Delilah. I found myself compelled to punch "Samson" in the face, often. But ultimately this is a very tender movie about true, unconditional love.

And again I must plug "Mugabe and the White African." This is the most riveting documentary I've seen. The son-in law is the kind of man that we all aspire to be.

It scored 100% on rotten tomatoes.

This is a fantastic movie. It depicts teenage life in the 90's and it is absolutely crazy. At least for me, haha. The acting is really interesting - Larry Clark (the director) took random kids/skaters in the park and offered them the chance to act. He did this in order to realistically present to viewers what teenage life is like. Highly recommended.

This movie made me cry...
Seven-year-old Sang-woo is left with his grandmother in a remote village while his mother looks for work. Born and raised in the city, Sang-woo quickly comes into conflict with his old-fashioned grandmother and his new rural surroundings.

i actually registered an account just for this thread, forgive me if i missed it, but i dont think anyone mentioned the movie "sunshine" with cillian murphy, chris evans, and a bunch of other familiar faces. If you get past the science of the movie, its just totally awesome. the soundtrack to the movie is epic also, there is one song in there that i have seen used a dozen times in new trailers and tv shows

My memory is horrible, here are two movies I've seen recently.

The hidden gem: Purple Sunset
Three vastly different people from different nations are forced to set on a journey for freedom together while fleeing from the fury that is the Japanese army.

The surprisingly good one (surprised me, anyway...): The White Ribbon
I can't really give away anything here, just know that there's something micheavous abound in a small town in germany and a bunch of kids are in the center of it all.

I haven't had time to read all 32 pages of this thread, so if someone already put up these movies \I apologise.
But one of the 'gems' of the 20th century certainly are:

1)2001:a space odyssey

2)Citizen Kane

i cant see how anyone could recommend the cube, what a horrible movie

also someone recommended life is beautiful and i have to say that was hands down the worst movie ive seen in my life, it almost caused me physical pain to sit through it (we watched it in school)

sunshine was also pretty awful, equilibrium is boring except for the fight scenes, funny games has awful reputation although ive never seen it, most of the other picks in this thread that i know are really good movies tho

my recommendations:
