Okay, the Cube fuckin sucked IMO. I appreciate all the movies being offered here though, that are atypical.
Just way too redundant and predicable- I thought. I was really let down.
I'm not exactly a "movie guy" so I may be harder to impress.

I am going to check out some more of these titles though

Wouldn't a "movie guy" be harder to impress? Or is it a difference between a movie guy and a "movie guy"?

Great claustrophobic and psychological movie. Seemingly low budget sci fi but actually very well done.

if you like mind fucks i highly recommend primer, 7k budget

my favourite movie... arguably better than "saving private ryan"

both are top notch indeed

Cube 1 was ''okey''

recommending the other parts is pretty close to insanity, though

Was "Contact" mentioned yet? If not, easily the best film I have seen. (Being an astronomy nerd that I am.) Another great film is an indy that premiered at Sundance last year called Moon.

I really hated this when it came out - felt like just another crime flick (I did like The Departed). Can you explain why I should give it a second chance?

Because the movie is not about crime. It is about family, especially the relationships between fathers and sons.

Any way, on topic, some films that are either older or not well know, but amazing nonetheless:

"Blade Runner"
A sci fi movie that's a little more suspense than action, though it has a fair amount of violence. Very thoughtful. The very first movie I bought in Blu Ray, the special effects still hold up decades later.

"Doctor Strangelove:"
Stanley Kubrick, so I guess I can't say it's unknown, but it's black and white, which I think causes a lot of people to over look it. Black Comedy set during the cold war. Peter Sellers plays multiple roles, lots of classic lines. Smart and funny at the same time.

"Snatch"
A very stylish heist film that's also a comedy. Amazing cast of characters. Essentially a remake of "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" but with an A list cast and production values.

"Johnny Dangerously"
A parody of 1920s gangster flics starring Michael Keaton and Joe Piscopo (back when he was still funny, and not a steroids advertisement).

"The Big Hit"
This is sort of an action caper comedy. Kind of a flawed masterpiece, because there's a love story angle which basically doesn't fit, isn't romantic, and isn't funny, but the whole rest of the movie is funny as hell. Lou Diamond Phillips especially steals the show, but pretty much the entire cast of characters is great. This is probably the worst of the five, but very under rated/unknown.

Honorable Mention to "AI"

Watch this movie, and when it gets to the part where the boy is waiting for the Blue Fairy, shut it off (I don't want to spoil it, but you'll know when it's at this part). If the movie had ended there as Kubrick intended, it would be great. From that point on, it's a shitty "happy ending" that was tacked on by Steven Spielberg.
Don't let me say this, but you're no worse than me; it's crazy.

Not gonna lie. Technically this movie blows. It's contrived, sentimental, and manipulative. But if you're in the right mood it can be great and maybe even a little insightful. It certainly gave me some inspiration to at least check out a few related books on the topic.

The acting and special effects kinda suck, but the story is good overall.

none of those movies are even remotely fucking close to being hidden gems, or surprisingly good.

They were all smash hits, read the thread title for fucks sake

Just watched it. A very thoughtful, very emotional movie. But also very funny at times.

Jean-Dominique suffers from a rare "locked-in" syndrome after a stroke. He can think clearly but apart from his left eye he is completely paralyzed.
What really makes this movie striking apart from the great "inner thoughts" of Jean-Do are the pictures. Reminded me a bit of Requiem for a Dream in terms of uniqueness of style.

Go watch it! One of the best movies you may come across.

(I got the French version plus English subs, can't say if the English synchro is decent)
