I had never, ever heard of Spirited Away here in the US for whatever reason. I'd never seen it mentioned before on any sites, film festivals, etc...

So I was searched for the top rated traditionally animated film and saw it on Metacritic sitting at #9 of any type of films overall. Watched it the next day, my mind was blown.

Hi, I hope that this hasn't been reposted:

Story about a bootleg school band that was supposed to play in the stead of the main band who was unable to (watch the movie to prevent spoilering). Pretty interesting and inspirational, probably not as trend setting as K-on! but certainly heart warming (along the lines of Music of the Heart). Apparently award winning in Japan, so I dunno if this is a "hidden gem"

According to the wiki entry: "Many of the girls really could not play these instruments[1] , and they did play the performances in the film, after training for only 5 months[2]. To prove this was not movie-magic, a tour was organized after the film with a live CD released shortly after.
"

Finally got around to watching this and thanks for the recommendation! was a great feel good film and reinvigorated my lost love of Jazz. Truely heartwarming.

yes watched it too and loved it. More movies like this would be appreciated!

I just finished Oldboy, which was fantastic. Does anyone have any other films in a similar vein or should I just keep checking out stuff by Park Chan-wook?

You know of course that Oldboy is a part of the trilogy?

Here are some more good Korean flicks (sorry if they've been posted already):

Gritty fight club-esque violent korean film about a guy who mysteriously gets locked in a room for a chunk of his life and swears vengence upon escape/release. Pretty unique and interesting fight scenes. Very avant garde. Features a scene at a LAN party where you can hear asian kids playing starcraft in the background.

They were playing Counterstrike 1.6, not Starcraft. Or maybe they were playing both? But I could've sworn I heard and AWP ;P

I wouldn't really call these "hidden" but they're phenomenal, and generally overlooked by a lot of people simply because they're black and white:

Been watching Korean movies like mad thanks to this thread. So far I've seen Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, The Chaser, and Joint Security Area. Now I have a bunch more, thanks for the responses everyone.

Obviously, the name puts a lot of people off, but it's really a very cute movie :3 and funny as well, in a very dry, sarcastic way.

Okay I just finished Youth in Revolt and it was a lot better than I expected:

Loved it. Probably because I could relate to it on a lot of levels. The ending was a bit of a cop out but the movie had its moments. My favourite part of the movie was "Francois".

I'm pretty sure Oldboy is one of the most overrated films of all time.

I have to agree. I watched the film yesterday and I was pleasently surprised about the story, the acting and the overall quality of the movie.

Just watched Ondskan / Evil (has been recommended here). Really liked it, great movie, very exciting. Some epic scenes.

Only thing I didn't quite understand was + Show Spoiler +
how Erik turned from the bully who smashes peoples' faces in at the beginning to the perfect example of a self-controlled "soon-to-be-studying-law" saint - just like that. There was no explanation given really. At first I thought it was because of the violence from his step father that he had to pass on. But he was still beaten up by him later in the movie. And there was no deep cutting experience that changed him. Arrived at the boardiang school and suddenly another person. Strange.

Hope this helps some
+ Show Spoiler +
It was his last chance to pass school, plus his mom had sold alot of expensive furniture to pay for the private school he was going to. He realised this was his last chance and you could tell that he did not want to fail his mom again. So he did all he could to avoid trouble, which was easier said than done =)

A bit off topic but in case you're interested; the book is even better, i.e. in the end of the movie when he beats his step father you don't see anything whereas you can read about the whole thing in the book.

+ Show Spoiler +
I think it's more than that. For anyone that has been in a similar situation where you get into fights regularly like he did, it's not something you want to do. Start fighting, and soon you'll be forced into more fights by the actions of other people. Anyone in this situation just wants to get out, and that's what the movie shows. He doesn't want to fight, but he has to. When he's sent to the new school not only does he know that his family (his mom) has offered up a lot to send him there, but he's afraid of getting into the same situation as he was in at his old school, and he also knows that as soon as you start on that road there's no turning back. That's why he tries to ignore the bullying at first. He's terrified he'll just end up in the same situation as before.

He didn't magically turn into a different person - the violence in his past forced him to be someone he didn't want to be.

i have to agree with you on this one, just watched it and man it blew my mind it almost had everything except manly action scenes (like of that from steven siegal and other testosterone shit)

I wanted to watch this film before but this thread reminded me to do it! Thanks OP and Thread!
I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

LES VISITEURS.

A GODDAMN WIZARD ACCIDENTALLY SENDS SOME GUYS (A KNIGHT AND AN IDIOT) INTO THE FUTURE. THE FIRST THING THEY DO IS ATTACK A CAR WITH A WARHAMMER.

Also, I highly recommend "The Gamers" for anyone who likes Dungeons and Dragons. The second one wasn't so good, though.
