Guy Richie's remake of The Longest Yard. Very funny. Never really got around in the States.

They made a clone of that movie with Adam sandler BUT with American Football! Very bad clone

Guy Ritchie produced it, but I enjoy him as an director/writer. Thats when he really shine.

'Mean Machine' is a remake from The Longest Yard from '74 with Burt Reynolds to begin with.

I don't know if it's been posted yet or not, but Stranger Than Fiction was a surprisingly good movie.

Agreed. A Will Ferrell movie with some actual heart? Never saw that coming. This would have been my pick for 'surprising' if it had come to mind at the time <_<

I was kind of confused by a lot of these posts. Wes Anderson movies are certainly amazing and I absolutely adore the lot of them, but hidden gems? I wouldn't exactly call his work hidden.

At any rate, here are some amazing movies that you have probably never heard of but most certainly would enjoy.

I Served the King of England

Loved this movie, very witty. Reminds me of my time waiting tables.

Another vote for this. Saw this sitting in my parents DVD rack for the longest time before I decided to watch it, really amazing war film.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was amazing as well, a lesser known film from Miyazaki, but really amazing and beautiful.

Isn't that the movie where blizzard got the idea of the reaver from? Sure looks like the reaver on the picture, and I know it wasn't a original blizzard design.

The Cell is a surprisingly good movie imo.

I'd be legitimately impressed if youve seen Kanashimi no Belladonna and Angel's Egg. Speaking of anime here are some oldies but goodies that I thoroughly enjoyed:

one time i was depressed when i was like 15, i didnt go outside and watched as much movies as i could constantly watch as a form of escapism. sometimes i'd watch 9/10 movies in a day. i've seen everything in this thread, and probably more.

This is a beautifully subtle film. I think if you liked Lost in Translation you'll like this one as well. The ending though is a bit ambiguous and I felt that I just wanted to spend more time with the characters in the movie.

Primer sucked. Dunno why you're so pumped about.
Other than that solid Thread so far.

Seems to be missing the point when people post blockbusters like Gladiator and stuff.
Keep the focus on hidden gems - that's what we're here for

La cité des enfants perdus (the city of the lost children, beautiful and strange. you probably love it or you hate it)

Shoot 'em up (fast paced shootouts and humorous one-liners)

Surfer, dude (relaxed movie. really great soundtrack)

The escapist

The fall (very beautiful camerawork although the story might be a little strange at times)

The prestige

Valhalla rising (saw it yesterday. very minimalistic movie with minimal dialogue/action/explanations)

Thank you for smoking was a really surprising movie and is not as much about cigarettes or the tobacco industry as you might think. Aaron Eckhart really played his role brilliantly here.

I hadn't heard much of it before I saw it (even though it's a Spike Lee film) but I thought it was great.
