Well ok I've been a Daft Punk fan from day 1, but still, great movie. It really adds the next and missing dimension to "Discovery" album. And don't Torrent it. Watch it on youtube or buy it like I did

ALso I have YET to see a good japanese movie and i've seen LOTS unfortunately. be careful with Jap movies guys! Battle Royale was "ok" Japanese movies are very strange for some reason. The last good one I saw was Okuribito. As for your Korean recommendations, almost none of those are 'surprisingly' good movies since almost all of them are very popular.

I never even heard of this movie the first time I saw it on television, despite it starring some megastars like Ben Affleck, Uma Thurman, and is directed by John Woo. Anyway, so thoroughly underappreciated it's unbelievable. These movies are suppose to suck, but Underworld was surprisingly watchable. I've seen it many times and still like it. For a movie that has 1 setting from start to end, and is just 12 old and middle age guys talking and arguing, this movie is very very satisfying. Pound for pound, it might be the greatest movie of all time simply because it manages to be an amazing film even if it's just talking.

Just watched Ondskan / Evil (has been recommended here). Really liked it, great movie, very exciting. Some epic scenes. Only thing I didn't quite understand was + Show Spoiler + how Erik turned from the bully who smashes peoples' faces in at the beginning to the perfect example of a self-controlled "soon-to-be-studying-law" saint - just like that. There was no explanation given really. At first I thought it was because of the violence from his step father that he had to pass on. But he was still beaten up by him later in the movie. And there was no deep cutting experience that changed him. Arrived at the boardiang school and suddenly another person. Strange.

Hope this helps some + Show Spoiler + It was his last chance to pass school, plus his mom had sold alot of expensive furniture to pay for the private school he was going to. He realised this was his last chance and you could tell that he did not want to fail his mom again. So he did all he could to avoid trouble, which was easier said than done =) A bit off topic but in case you're interested; the book is even better, i.e. in the end of the movie when he beats his step father you don't see anything whereas you can read about the whole thing in the book.

Thats a Preview of all three characters he plays, it kind of takes a bit to get into and the comedy is a little childish but check it out.

Only good parts were the one where he's doing his kung fu pics and the cute girl. But this movie was unnecessarily too fucking long for it being worth watching. Too much useless scenes and the end was just fucked up. Not a bad movie but not good either, Hell far from being good. Fuk i wasted 3 hours for almost nothing except that i love the actress. I wonder if there was actually 2 movies, the longest which i watched and the one which last like 1h30 min ? Dunno i downloaded the one with 2Gigs and there was one with only 705MB. Argh.

In my experience Japanese movies are often less exaggerated and more down-to-earth than korean movies. The korean movies often shares a lot of things in common with the american movie industry. Your list confirms it, as it is mostly composed of melodramatic or suspense-built films. You haven't even mentioned a Ki duk kim movie, it's quite sad that a korean movie expert wouldn't mention a single film of his as he is the best director from that country.

In the Loop [2009] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226774/ This one is pretty recent but it didn't get much attention at least in Canada (probably the US as well since we share their most of their media outlets) It is a political satire that tickled me greatly. Killer Bean Forever [2009] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1340108/ This is a low budget animated action film. This is a great action/comedy (one of my favorite genres) film that surprises me with how well the action scenes were coordinated(also a hilarious dance scene) and shows that effort and hard work can often yield surprising results. disclaimer: I don't want you to waste your time with this movie unless you watch this clip to give you an idea what kind of film you will be watching. It is not for everyone...

I'm not like you" - but if you judge just by what the film tells you he IS a bully who also beats up other students and the only thing that restrains him later is the promise to his mom; so he is not that much different from Silverheim, he would also do it but he's kind of forced not to. BUT that's not what is being shown you in the movie. From the point where he arrives at the boarding school he is a warm and loving guy who sticks up for his friends and is in philosophical discussions as to why law doesn't apply in that school etc. I just didn't find it very convincing that's all. Just like with that teacher who is introduced as the most intelligent and fair teacher (the biology guy) and he's absolutely CLUELESS about what's going on - he even holds a speech that it's a shame that Tanguy left etc. - but he sits at the same table with the other teachers not far away from the students and these "rituals" with beating up people happen there every day - so how couldn't he have noticed it? From a purely viewing-pleasure-perspective I really like the movie but some points just weren't really convincing imho. oh, and Love Exposure is frickin great. only that the way that movie took beyond the second part didn't really please me too much. imho it could have ended when he meets the girl at the street fighter scene.
