Your argument is that if you take average people and put them in a forest with a camera they're likely to start raping, murdering, and pillaging just because they can, and your justification for this argument is that some soldiers involved in war, an activity in which you are generally immersed in daily violence and death, adopted sadistic traits.

Sorry but if you thought that argument made any sense at all, continuing the discussion is pointless. Maybe you should quote who you're talking to OMG. I'm obviously talking to the same person I've been talking to for the last like 5 posts in a row??? Sorry but you people are really stupid, I can't stand talking to you anymore, it's just painful. I feel like I'm getting dumber by the second. Just giving you general advice how to post in a forum man, might be hard for people who just entered the thread to follow. Chill... Also IMDB is not as inflated as you say, just look at the top 100 and say one movie that shouldn't be there, they're all gold! It takes 1 second to look at the list and know it's not a serious resource. Shawshank Redemption as the #1 movie ever? Seriously? I mean it's a good movie, but...
According to most people, apparently yes.

Hi, I hope that this hasn't been reposted:
![[image loading]](http://asianfilmreviews.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/swinge38080girls.jpg)
Story about a bootleg school band that was supposed to play in the stead of the main band who was unable to (watch the movie to prevent spoilering). Pretty interesting and inspirational, probably not as trend setting as K-on! but certainly heart warming (along the lines of Music of the Heart). Apparently award winning in Japan, so I dunno if this is a "hidden gem"
According to the wiki entry: "Many of the girls really could not play these instruments[1] , and they did play the performances in the film, after training for only 5 months[2]. To prove this was not movie-magic, a tour was organized after the film with a live CD released shortly after."

Agreed, there are WAY better movies than shawshank. However, imdb top 100 is pretty solid i would say. Of course missing a few :-) Imho best movie of all time: HEAT! Pacino/deNiro szene is just too awesome.

You can extoll your imagined superiority all you want buddy. I had hoped you might be able to be a little more mature. Here's my reply anyway, free of insults or cheap humour. You might want something completely different from internet discussions, but I would personally prefer to test my opinions and conclusions in the keening fires of polite debate, rather than mindless shit-slinging.
People are very capable of a rapid degradation of moral values when placed in strange situations where they are not judged by outside observers. Lack of sleep, food and increase in general tension can hasten the process. A desire to synthesise the mentality of those they are filming would clearly also hasten said process.
You seem to be overlooking the fact that most of the soldiers in the Russian army were conscripts. If you think that only the hardened veterans were going around committing vile acts, I believe you are being a little short-sighted. Many would have been normal citizens.
I'll admit it's a tenuous comparison, but what other comparisons can be made? This is a handycam-ish documentary crew, in a very hostile, dangerous and weird place. It's not a National Geographic documentary about a peaceful village of nomads. I think the psychology of the documentary-makers' plunge into depravity is realistic and understandable. Not to say it would happen to every crew, though.
It's like storm chasers, who look for tornadoes and go as close as possible to them with video cameras. You disregard your natural feelings for safety, when in search of the prize of a good tornado caught on film. I can imagine these people disregard their usual moral safeguards, in search of a raw depiction of the monstrosities they are seeing. In desensitising themselves to the acts they watch, they break down their own personal boundaries to perpetrating those acts.

Personally I'm a huge fan of the positive and beautiful message of Shawshank. To be honest, grading films past the top 20 is extremely difficult, though. There are so many brilliant works which all shine for different and incomparable reasons.

More movies: Barton Fink Why it's hidden: Overshadowed by most of the other Coen Bros. films. Starts rather slowly. Requires thinking to enjoy. Why it's good: My sister called it an "intellectual horror film" meaning that it sends you to what a Dante-esque hell might look like for an intellectual person. The brilliance the Coen Bros. have made typical is here too. Contains one of the most memorable scenes I've ever seen, I don't want to spoil the surprise though.
Double Indemnity Why it's hidden: This is one of those unexpected pleasure ones. Old movies are usually appreciated, requiring them to be contextualized etc. I don't usually expect to just fall into them. Also I generally find noir films rather dull and obsessed with their own plot tangles. Why it's good: It's just fun, and engaging, tense and satisfying to watch unfold. You know where it's going, so you can really enjoy the ride. I felt like it's not dated in the slightest, that modern audiences can jump right in. The sexual innuendo and double entendres were quite unexpected and excellent.

ignore the cheesy as fuck tagline. This is a super good movie, the first ~30 min might be slow, but goddamn, it's pure gold. So much so that I am literally confused when someone says they didn't like it. I'm just like, what the fuck?

I was quickly clicking between the movie channels on my tv, and this one was just starting so I watched it, having heard nothing of it and was surprised to find that it was a pretty good film. There's a twist at the end that's as close to unpredictable as possible. its not the greatest movie ever, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Near Dark It's like what Twilight could be if it were cool. Keeps it simple and lets its well-created atmosphere rule the picture.
Silent Hill Carries too much baggage with it as a game adaptation. If you just forget the affiliation it's a good creepy movie.

I found this film to be excellent. It reminded me that slater can act when needs to, one of the most original and thought provoking films i've seen in a while.

On IMDB Avatar is not only in the Top 250 it is in the top 100 at #93
And honestly, everyone I talked to loved it.
That doesnt stop it from being a garbage movie.
What's equally as hilarious is Dances with Wolves is not in the Top 250 and its the same damn movie, except when DWW did it it actually had some shred of originality and artistic vision (and good acting and good cinematography and a good score and good pacing).

Btw Avatar sucked. It's really quiet terrible at STORY and PLOT. But if you like eye candy watch in 3d. I swear seeing those holograms in 3d almost made the movie worth a second watch... But not really. >.>

Thanks guys for the suggestions of things for me to watch. I've seen:
Pandorum - Wouldn't call it a gem, but it wasn't bad. Outlander - Had to watch this because the tag line is Vikings VS Aliens lol. It was actually decent. Primer - WTF! What I understood was good lol. The mist - Also a good film.
Got man from earth and exam lined up to watch next.
