Agreed. A Will Ferrell movie with some actual heart? Never saw that coming. This would have been my pick for 'surprising' if it had come to mind at the time <_<
I was kind of confused by a lot of these posts. Wes Anderson movies are certainly amazing and I absolutely adore the lot of them, but hidden gems? I wouldn't exactly call his work hidden.
At any rate, here are some amazing movies that you have probably never heard of but most certainly would enjoy.

Another vote for this. Saw this sitting in my parents DVD rack for the longest time before I decided to watch it, really amazing war film.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was amazing as well, a lesser known film from Miyazaki, but really amazing and beautiful.
Isn't that the movie where blizzard got the idea of the reaver from? Sure looks like the reaver on the picture, and I know it wasn't a original blizzard design.

I'd be legitimately impressed if youve seen Kanashimi no Belladonna and Angel's Egg. Speaking of anime here are some oldies but goodies that I thoroughly enjoyed:

one time i was depressed when i was like 15, i didnt go outside and watched as much movies as i could constantly watch as a form of escapism. sometimes i'd watch 9/10 movies in a day. i've seen everything in this thread, and probably more.
This is a beautifully subtle film. I think if you liked Lost in Translation you'll like this one as well. The ending though is a bit ambiguous and I felt that I just wanted to spend more time with the characters in the movie.
im veary surprised that Repo! The Genetic Opera wasnt on here within the frist 4 pages also loved lo
it reminds me alot of evil dead 2
watched it a few weeks ago and have seen it 3 times sents . havent seen shutter island mainly because, i looked at my friends and told them what was going to happen and how it wood end just from seeing the trailer, and sure enuff i was right. i find most movies that have an odvious ending thats suppoes to be a big twist are way to predictable. but thats me.
Thank you for smoking was a really surprising movie and is not as much about cigarettes or the tobacco industry as you might think. Aaron Eckhart really played his role brilliantly here.
shallow gound was veary surprising. it was one of thoes "well we gotta get one more movie for the 5 for $5 deal" and ended up with a pretty good movie.
