Hi guys, I'm finally getting new computer (main reason ofcourse SC2), but i would like to try some games i've missed during years when my old computer wasnt able to run them.
My preferences aren't genre oriented, I'm looking most for good story and atmosphere - so far i'm plannig to play Mass Effect (played it a bit and loved it, had to stop because of the old comp.), Witcher, Bioshock, SC2 ofcourse.
Any really good games with athmosphere you couldnt forget?

Fallout 3 has that desolate, beautiful feeling of vastness that I've been longing for, with great minimalistic sounds and occasional music scores.
Watch some youtube videos, you'll instantly fall in(hohoho) love with it.

Witcher is great if you have the time, its fairly slow in terms of pacing.
Fallout 3, HL2 series are some others I would really recommend.
I play very few games though so don't have any others that I could recommend from personal experience.
|
yeah definitely the Witcher.
Dragon Age has good lore/character backgrounds, but the world itself is pretty void of feeling (i'm in the midst of it right now).
otherwise i'm having trouble thinking of any more not mentioned, but if you have a PS2 you really need to get Shadow of the Colossus =D

Other than the ones you already mentioned, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout 3, Oblivion, there are quite a few lesser clones of these masterpieces: Risen, Two Worlds etc etc You should also check out GTA 4, Prototype, the new Prince of Persia that came out in 2008, Batman Asylum, Assassin's Creed 1 & 2, I'm sure there are more I can't remember
edit: definitely Dragon Age, how could I have forgotten, Borderlands was amazing as well

Given that you like Mass Effect, I'd play Mass Effect 2 after that, and also Dragon Age: Origins. Bioware makes top notch RPGs.
As far as FPS-style games, I'd recommend playing through the whole Half-Life series, and, if you haven't already, Portal.
If you want to play some turn-based strategy, you can try playing Civ IV. It's a few years old at this point, but it's a classic strategy game and Civ V will be coming out soon, too. Plus you can get inspiration from the Succession games being played in the Sports & Games section of TL.

Although not a PC game, Shadow of the Colossus was one of the most captivating and original single player experiences I have ever played, the game is art, period, no matter what anyone else says. The world is beautiful and the game is really fun and original with a really intense atmosphere for all of the bosses and the worlds. Do not spoil it for yourself in any way( do not look at faqs, screeenshots or reviews), but if you ever get a PS2, grab this masterpiece.
Oh embrace already mentioned it , there is seriously no game that even resembles this masterpiece.

Borderlands was amazing as well Yup, forgot that as well. Much more fun if you can play with 1-3 friends though, also its pretty short, I played it through with mates over 12 hours at a one day LAN
|
there are no good games like thief, deus ex or half life in the last 3-4 years i'm afraid.
|
If you like hack-and-slash Demon's Souls is the way to go. That game is too fucking hard/awesome. Also seconding SotC, Fallout and Dragon Age.
Also, pick up multiplayer games. I still play Super Bombad Racing with my friends and was one of the first games I got for the PS2.

FEAR have a good atmosphere Fallout 3 too.

half life 2 is great , i play it often

dont understand why people like the witcher. mediocre looks and characters and the WORST combat system ever. just because he wirls his blade like a lowclass street artist before evry attack doesnt mean its good or looks cool. worst rpg gameplay ive seen to date. maybe some people just dig the crappy pseudo sex stuff in it.
was in a similar situation 9 months ago. games must try: -fallout 3. great game all around. running alone thru the wastes always low on ammo in that perfect post apocalyptic world is something you dont wanna miss.
- mass effect(2). really me2 is one of the best rpg games ive ever played. sure its a "newschool" action rpg but the game is just amazing. such high quality talk/cut/text scenes and fun and demanding combat. lovely.
-batman AA! yeah no rpg. but if you want atmosphere and atleast somewhat like batman its one of the best games of 09.
-dragon age. its a great game. imho a bit overhyped since it def has its downsides and is way too "dumbed down" for my taste. but thats maybe because i expected the epicness of a baldurs gate which it just cant deliver in any way. also the talking parts look pathetic compared to the movie like stuff in me2. but thats just me. its absolutely worth checking out. i want a baldurs gate 3 (
-bioshock 1/2. not as good as systemshock 2 but atleast a similar feeling which alone makes em good games. (ss2 one of the best games evurrr)
other then that when i was in that situation i just browsed the ranking lists of sites like gamespot or ign and looked for games that i might like. usually there is a way to get em one way or the other like friends having old unused copys etc

I recently got a new pc as well. So far I've done well with sc2 beta and dragon age. It's no baldur's gate, but still very good. Hoping that will last me until civ5 is released and my life is officially over at that point.

Both Call of Juarez are quite cool, if you like the wild west setting. Not many games in that genre, besides the newly red dead redemption but its xbox only.
|
Penumbra has a brilliant atmosphere, and is one of the best horror games I've played.
|
Well I don't play that many games, but the ones I can remember having a good game atmosphere fun gamplay etc. were Mass Effect 1 & 2 Crysis Red Faction: Guerrilla
Most definitely can recommend Mass Effect 2 though, I've finished it 6x now (twice on insanity) and have had loads of fun with that game and all the alternatives you can choose(especially if you import ME1 character)
