Hi guys,
I'm finally getting new computer (main reason ofcourse SC2), but i would like to try some games i've missed during years when my old computer wasnt able to run them.

My preferences aren't genre oriented, I'm looking most for good story and atmosphere - so far i'm plannig to play Mass Effect (played it a bit and loved it, had to stop because of the old comp.), Witcher, Bioshock, SC2 ofcourse.

Any really good games with athmosphere you couldnt forget?

Fallout 3 has that desolate, beautiful feeling of vastness that I've been longing for, with great minimalistic sounds and occasional music scores.

Watch some youtube videos, you'll instantly fall in(hohoho) love with it.

Witcher is great if you have the time, its fairly slow in terms of pacing.

Fallout 3, HL2 series are some others I would really recommend.

I play very few games though so don't have any others that I could recommend from personal experience.

yeah definitely the Witcher.

Dragon Age has good lore/character backgrounds, but the world itself is pretty void of feeling (i'm in the midst of it right now).

otherwise i'm having trouble thinking of any more not mentioned, but if you have a PS2 you really need to get Shadow of the Colossus =D

Other than the ones you already mentioned, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout 3, Oblivion, there are quite a few lesser clones of these masterpieces: Risen, Two Worlds etc etc
You should also check out GTA 4, Prototype, the new Prince of Persia that came out in 2008, Batman Asylum, Assassin's Creed 1 & 2, I'm sure there are more I can't remember

edit: definitely Dragon Age, how could I have forgotten, Borderlands was amazing as well

Given that you like Mass Effect, I'd play Mass Effect 2 after that, and also Dragon Age: Origins. Bioware makes top notch RPGs.

As far as FPS-style games, I'd recommend playing through the whole Half-Life series, and, if you haven't already, Portal.

If you want to play some turn-based strategy, you can try playing Civ IV. It's a few years old at this point, but it's a classic strategy game and Civ V will be coming out soon, too. Plus you can get inspiration from the Succession games being played in the Sports & Games section of TL.
. . . nevermore

Although not a PC game, Shadow of the Colossus was one of the most captivating and original single player experiences I have ever played, the game is art, period, no matter what anyone else says. The world is beautiful and the game is really fun and original with a really intense atmosphere for all of the bosses and the worlds. Do not spoil it for yourself in any way( do not look at faqs, screeenshots or reviews), but if you ever get a PS2, grab this masterpiece.

Oh embrace already mentioned it , there is seriously no game that even resembles this masterpiece.

Borderlands was amazing as well

Yup, forgot that as well. Much more fun if you can play with 1-3 friends though, also its pretty short, I played it through with mates over 12 hours at a one day LAN

If you like hack-and-slash Demon's Souls is the way to go. That game is too fucking hard/awesome. Also seconding SotC, Fallout and Dragon Age.

Also, pick up multiplayer games. I still play Super Bombad Racing with my friends and was one of the first games I got for the PS2.

dont understand why people like the witcher. mediocre looks and characters and the WORST combat system ever. just because he wirls his blade like a lowclass street artist before evry attack doesnt mean its good or looks cool. worst rpg gameplay ive seen to date. maybe some people just dig the crappy pseudo sex stuff in it.

was in a similar situation 9 months ago. games must try:
-fallout 3. great game all around. running alone thru the wastes always low on ammo in that perfect post apocalyptic world is something you dont wanna miss.

- mass effect(2). really me2 is one of the best rpg games ive ever played. sure its a "newschool" action rpg but the game is just amazing. such high quality talk/cut/text scenes and fun and demanding combat. lovely.

-batman AA! yeah no rpg. but if you want atmosphere and atleast somewhat like batman its one of the best games of 09.

-dragon age. its a great game. imho a bit overhyped since it def has its downsides and is way too "dumbed down" for my taste. but thats maybe because i expected the epicness of a baldurs gate which it just cant deliver in any way. also the talking parts look pathetic compared to the movie like stuff in me2. but thats just me. its absolutely worth checking out.
i want a baldurs gate 3 (

-bioshock 1/2. not as good as systemshock 2 but atleast a similar feeling which alone makes em good games. (ss2 one of the best games evurrr)

other then that when i was in that situation i just browsed the ranking lists of sites like gamespot or ign and looked for games that i might like. usually there is a way to get em one way or the other like friends having old unused copys etc

I recently got a new pc as well. So far I've done well with sc2 beta and dragon age. It's no baldur's gate, but still very good. Hoping that will last me until civ5 is released and my life is officially over at that point.

Both Call of Juarez are quite cool, if you like the wild west setting. Not many games in that genre, besides the newly red dead redemption but its xbox only.

Well I don't play that many games, but the ones I can remember having a good game atmosphere fun gamplay etc. were
Mass Effect 1 & 2
Crysis
Red Faction: Guerrilla

Most definitely can recommend Mass Effect 2 though, I've finished it 6x now (twice on insanity) and have had loads of fun with that game and all the alternatives you can choose(especially if you import ME1 character)

If you're looking for inspired visual design and environments that garnered a lot of critical attention, don't ignore a few PS2 games. As a couple people mentioned before, Shadow of the Colossus (which is the spiritual successor of Ico, which IMHO was even better) is a great experience.

A new computer capable of running SC2 should be powerful enough to emulate the PS2, probably even at higher FPS and resolution than the PS2 could handle. You can buy the games and run them on your computer via the DVD drive. Currently there are still a few minor graphical glitches and inaccuracies with PS2 emulation, but for many games they would be hard to detect even for someone who has played the game on the console itself.

I don't understand how people enjoy Fallout 3...I though it was one of the most boring games I had ever played. From the start to the end you don't get a single new ability or weapon that changes gameplay in the slightest, you just wander around, find an enemy, go into VATS, shoot it, collect shit. The complete lack of character customization was pitiful.

ME2 was better, but by the end of the game I was incredibly bored as well, only one gun of each type in the game, and you end up using the same (cool at first) abilities for the entire thing....plus that fucking mining mini-game that gets you money which is completely worthless in a gameplay sense. I loved the game at the beginning, but by the end was just pissed off and bored.

Dead Space wasn't a great game, but it was actually interesting and cool, you had to pick your weapons carefully and the zero gravity was well done and fresh. Good atmosphere too, although the ending was rather shitty.

Borderlands COULD have been great, but they fucked it up with the numerous broken abilities, not enough item prefixes/suffixes, the terrible interface that doesnt show all item mods, and the fact that you don't get any good gear from bosses, you get it from repeatedly running chests.... The character abilites got old fast too, as you only have one active power for the entire time. Maybe Borderlands 2 will fix these obvious mistakes and be really sick. Still worth one playthrough.

I have DLed and played every single new release and sorted them into folders called GOOD. WORTH PLAYING, and ABSOLUTE SHIT. My good folder contains Starcraft, COD4, Diablo 2, and Counter strike...so depressing.

For the worth one play catagory you could try

Mirror's Edge
Assassin's Creed 2
Crysis (If your comp is a beast)
Titan Quest
and Dead Space like I said

At least you won't feel like you just had bamboo splinters shoved under your nails after you beat them...

In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

Alternatively, you could play it on the PC with the help of an emulator, since modern PC systems are quite capable of PS2 emulation. Before anyone pounces at me, emulators themselves are completely legal. As long as you actually own all the games you play and a PS2 to extract the BIOS from, you are not doing anything wrong.

2 little games that are very good are braid and world of goo. both very unique in their gameplay and stories. plus they'll be cheap. look those up for sure.

- controls are terrible, they didn't even try to adjust them to the PC version
- considering this a survival horror game is a joke; I played it during night-time with maxed graphics and a good sound system and it wasn't scary at all
- bad, predictable story
- ~7 hours play-time + you won't play it again because there is absolutely no reason to do so

Here are games I'd recommend:
Games I played:

- Fallout 3: Great game, nice atmosphere and story line and character stats/system, but I feel like the developers could of done a better job. It's a post apocalyptic fps in an open world where you can kill anyone and take any useable item, go anywhere and pretty much do anything (if your strong enough). The whole entire wasteland looks exactly the same and it doesn't look as realistic as say something like stalker. It's a fps/rpg that cn be played in the 1st or 3rd person view, but it's best played in the 1st.

- Half life 2 + episode 1&2: I don't care what anyone says, I really don't like these games. It was okay when it came out, but with really simple gun play/ shooting sequences, easy puzzles, a story line about as straight as a ruler with basically no side quests or anywhere to explore, I just didn't dig this game. Maybe it's just the style the game chooses to pursue that I didn't like, but I still didn't like it. It does a good job for what it meant to do; be a straight fps action game with mediocre puzzles and shooting sequences, but I did not like this game, particularly episode one and two. Maybe I just outgrew the series but I found this game, particularly episode 1, just really bland. Im sure that 99% of the gaming community will look at this as blasphemy, but my opinion stands.

- resident evil 4: Now I absolutely ADORE this game. I really can't find enough good things to write about it. This is a survival horror in this 3rd person perspective, and it's just really well made. The shooting sequences with the zombies is really fun, albeit it might be a tad bit hard to get used to because you cant run and shoot at the same time, but slower enemies make up for that. You go about through different environments shooting zombies and finding new weapons to upgrade, and you have to save some girl because some bad guy stole her. The bosses are all really fun and the game can get kinda spooky at times, but it's nothing compared to like the first silent hill or some equally terrifying game. It has a real feeling of isolation and being stranded in a desolate land with zombies crawling around it that I really like. The bullets are scarce and the zombies come in large amounts and it the game doesn't feel like it's a full blown tom cruise action movie, which I really like.

Resident evil 5: Survival horror with co-op set in Africa. Now this game is also good, but I would say it's more of an action compared to resident evil 4. You move a lot quicker in this game and with the addition of a NPC as a permanent sidekick, the feeling of horror really gets removed from this game when compared to other resident evils. Still it's very similar when compared to resident evil 4, but I'd say it's worse because it's not as scary, it's way too action oriented and fast paced for me, and overall fun-ness for me is worse when compared to the previous resident evil. But some of my friends like resident evil 5 more than RE4 so it really depends on your taste I guess.

- Dead space: Survival horror set in space. I also didn't like this game. Repetitive levels, very little creativity, terrible story (zombies invade a ship in space, where have I seen that before?) and absolutely no art design or creativity in the atmosphere (unless you like looking at a wall in a space station) made this game a not enjoyable one for me. The shooting system is okay, but it's such a small innovation that it didn't really cut it for me. It's really more of a combination of the best shooters/3rd person action games blended into one just for the sole purpose of making a profit. Yes maybe all games are designed to make a profit, but this game is really unoriginal in my opinion. It's like a action movie that stars some a class holywood actor with a 100 million dollar budget and a 50 million dollar advertising campaign.

There are a lot of other games you can look into, but I can't really say anything about them because I have yet to play them. I only last week myself got a new computer so im slowing advancing through the list of games I want to play. Here are a few games I think you should check out:
- Stalker and it's expantions
- Bioshock + bioshock 2
- Deus Ex (the first one
- elder scrolls 4
- dragon age
- battlefield bad company 2 or call of duty 5 if U like online oriented shooters
- Mass effect 2

or just check gamerankings.com in the PC section

that's all I can currently think of. Obviously this list could of been better, but there's only so much I can do. The reviews for the games I just did I wrote it all in like 15 minutes and I didn't really edit it, so if you find a spelling or grammar mistake, or if it didn't really make sense, sue me.

Some of the recommendations here surprise the hell out of me, particularly coming from people who have repeatedly derided SC2 on the SC2 forum. SC2's gameplay still outdoes everything but the original, and it still is met with derision. At the same time, the critics will recommend something like Fallout 3, Dead Space, or Bioshock? Among the respective hardcore communities of those genres, that would be tantamount to telling someone on this forum to go play C&C.

Addressing Bioshock in particular, it is exactly to System Shock 2 what SC2 is to SC1. While the gameplay and atmosphere have a different flavor, it is ultimately a rehash of similar concepts with depth taken away from certain aspects (in this case, it is impossible to lose in Bioshock. The atmosphere that SS2 created is entirely lost by the fact that there is zero consequence in death). Basically really the only reason to prefer Bioshock to SS2 graphics.

If you're going to be critical, at least be consistent about it.

1. Seeing how most RTS aren't sc clones, I can't see how this statement makes sense.

2. Hardcore SC players aren't necessarily hardcore in every genre. See how I used "Hardcore SC" as opposed to "Hardcore RTS"? I'm sure there are people out there who prefer their own outdated RTS game to SC1 and provide tons of reasons to back their claims.

3. And graphics is an essential element in an FPS game, especially when the OP stresses immersion.
