I would like to think about how blizzard plans to approach the release of an additional 2 expansions after wings of liberty is released. What made starcraft:broodwar so successful was the amazing balance they managed to instill with fun dynamic units, newly added. Obviously these game-breaking units that made the game was big as it did today were definitely: the lurker, the corsair and the medic (debatable). Starcraft 1 players were FORCED to switch because there was no way to they could enjoy this amazingly balanced expansion pack without purchasing / pirating it.
But with the new editor, any new units / spells / campaigns blizzard decides to add can be DUPLICATED. Does this not spell trouble for blizzard? I suppose they could always filter through any custom-maps created to duplicate expansion pack units / abilities but whats to stop players from hosting private games between themselves and their friends? The lure of an official ladder isn't enough, just think about how starcraft 1 had no competitive ladder for quite a while before private ladders such as WGT, PGT and iccup started becoming well-known.
And now im wondering why WC3 frozen throne was never met with this problem.
random thoughts for food.

I really don't think there will be a problem. Blizzard knows how much value the expansion needs to have and custom melee games with duplicated characters just seems like way too much work compared to just spending the money. Plus all the good modders are going to buy the expansion straight off the bat, so you're either stuck doing the work yourself or getting a crappy mod that doesn't work properly ugh..

medic is not debatable..without them mech tvz would be used all the time and zerg would eventually devise enough counters for it to be useful, you cannot debate medics helping the game out tremendously.
although yes i agree, hopefully tehy will do is, make it so you just cant play the campaign but allow you to play ladder and all of that with the full units..
doubtful with the way its looking though

Oh they also let us understand that you won't be able to play custom games with your friends who have newer expansions =(.

Didn't they say that you would be able to download patches for multiplayer? I don't have a source though so I might be wrong.

the idea of 2 more expansions adds a lot of potential to hope for with this game, because at the moment it feels really tame.

If a game requires its expansions to make it good, its not a good game

Then I guess StarCraft and WarCraft III are both bad games, since they both would have been a complete mess without their respective expansions. I would have said "Diablo II" as well, but there are people that argue that Lord of Destruction ruined Diablo II.

Shit thanks for telling me that. Now I realize the original starcraft blew, I mean it needed Broodwar to put in Medics, Lurkers and Corsairs! All staples of certain matchups. Whew, glad that got off my mind.
