Hey all,
Probably a lot of kids are just finishing up with school and grades. Since I'm usually pretty careful about this stuff I just went through checking my grades, and then calculated the totals all by hand, and actually found out that my english grade was off. When I calculated this and checked it over and over, the grade should have been an 80, where the posted grade was a 78. I emailed my teacher about this, and she went through the math herself and realized that it was a bug in the grading software.
So long story short: the grading program said I got a C+ when I really got a B-! So check your borderline grades by hand- It was really worth it for me!

Yes if you have the exact policy and each of your grades including the final/etc always double check everything... very good idea!
BUT: always be extremely polite to your teacher/professor when you believe there has been a mistake as you might be missing something or they might get annoyed with correcting it if you come on like a ton of bricks.
Good idea: "I tried calculating my grades myself and got a XXX, can you please check and see if I did in fact earn a higher grade?"
Bad idea: "Yo prof fix my grades you math moron"

When I checked mine (a few weeks back) I had a B- in Philosphy, I'm like WTF I know I did good in that class... Turns out they left my midterm off the grading sheet completely and would have stayed that way had I not emailed them questioning my grade. So yeah, it was definitely worth it for me.

It's also not a bad idea to ask an instructor to forward to you the information that was used to calculate your grade if you don't have each of the individual grades at your disposal... it prevents them from pulling some made up bs.

Yeah, since my mom is a teacher, she helped me triple check everything before emailing my teacher. I also emailed her all of the math that I did to get the grade.

lol micronesia "Yo prof fix my grades you math moron".
But yes in university it's all usually in the course outline, exactly how much each assignment, quiz, midterm, final, lab, tutorial, etc is worth so it should be easy to do.

I think more important than the borderline grades (aside from the ones where the extra few marks means the difference between pass and fail) are the ones you know you aced but for some reason got way lower than you expected. I had a friend get around 70 when he expected something closer to 90. He asked his prof what happened and it turns out that they lost his midterm grade so he got a 0 recorded for that
I've also had an instance, while TAing where the professor looked at the wrong column on the spreadsheet while inputting the grade, and one of the students came to me asking wtf was going on after his prof told him he got a 0/10 on assignments (one of those cases where the extra few marks means passing or failing, so he was panicking like crazy)
While I was taking classes, I kinda accepted all of my grades for what they were, but if something looks fishy, it wouldn't hurt to double check with a professor to see where you lost marks, or whether your exam really was THAT bad. Mistakes do happen, and I kinda wished I knew that

Yeah, this... I did absolutely no work in my bio class this semester and walked into the final without having opened the textbook before. I somehow got a C in there, so I'll take it. I should get a good price when I resell the book too. ^^
