This is probably the most straight-forward and narrowed down advice of awesome that I have seen in recent times. Now if everyone did this, depression and anxiety rates would sink like a stone in water. Socializing is underrated. We need other people in our lives in order to be happy (most of us do anyways...). Everyone should "work out". It's a pretty funny construction actually; our bodies are made for work and are capable of doing pretty hardcore endurance and strength stuff. Working out balances transmittor substances and catecholamines (stress hormones); epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin etc. Proper nutrition makes your body and mind function in an optimal way. Cut back on the carbs and add plenty of green veggies and leafs in there with the meat and fat. Get your minerals too. (zink, magnesium). 3 simple pointers for a better life.

However, it recently came up where it wasn't taken as the "casual gaming" sense of the word. I ended up trying to explain it in an extremely awkward conversation... Not fun. From then on, I have tried to avoid the word.

I come at it from two sides: one that prides herself on being a progressive and educated linguist, and one whose experience will never allow her to so much as hear the word rape without being affected. On the one hand, I understand the natural progression of language that allows for words like rape to have completely different connotations in the gaming world than anywhere else. I understand that it is part of the culture, and that no commentator/gamer/kid in their mom's basement really means that they want to force themselves on another person sexually when they are describing the results of a match. I get that, in it's own way, using terms like "rape" are actually a way of building a social identity and of defining a subculture. All that said, I still type the word "rape," then read it back and get warm all over. My hands start to shake and my cheeks get red. My eyes get glassy and my body pulls into itself in every possible way. I cross my ankles and tuck them under my chair. I feel as though everyone is looking at me, even though I'm practically alone in a downtown office. My face feels like it isn't my own, and the way my very physical insides react make me feel dirty, guilty, afraid, and unworthy. You can academize the word "rape" all you want. But it will never, ever stop meaning the same thing to those who have ever seen, heard, or experienced it, or loved someone who has. It doesn't make me mad at you, I won't get up in arms to stop everyone from ever using it again, but when I hear it... I guess I just assume the person saying it has never taken the time or the heart to really, truly, understand what they are saying to one in four women and I-don't-know-how-many men. I get it, I really do... but, as of yet, that still hasn't even come close to making it ok.

As a man, I know I don't like have to qualify things I say to other people with my gender. I don't mean that in a snarky way, I just honestly think it's pretty unfair to have your personal opinions get used to generalize your sex, and I wonder if after awhile you just get used to male-centric forums doing that to you. Degrading? No, not necessarily. If it's coming from the direction of "Well, you only think that because you're a woman" or "You couldn't possibly understand, you're a girl" or even "I know what you think because you are a woman" then yes, of course. But I am of the opinion that gender does inescapably influence your point of view. It follows, then, that if I'm explaining something from a "woman's point of view," it could be valuable to someone who doesn't see the world through the same lens as I do. As long as there isn't discrimination involved, I think that recognizing our unique frames of reference (woman, American, young, educated, etc.) is usually helpful in promoting understanding! ...as long as the other party is listening.

Well, SOMEBODY always refused to play DDR with his gf, so obviously not well enough... http://www.hulu.com/watch/65439/wcg-ultimate-gamer-move-it-or-lose-it JK <3 U honey. ACTUALLY... Geoff sealed the deal on our relationship when he took 3 terms of ballroom/swing dancing with me...and actually liked it! He's pretty good too. Especially at super sexy tango. He's got good rhythm and he'll dance casually too, but only pretty rarely if the time and his BAL is right.
