So as some of you may know from my posts, I'm a bit of a bibliophile. (Or at least I would be if college weren't such a drain on my time.) Anyways, This past new-years I set a resolution to read more. My 'goal' was to average a book a week for the year, so 52 books total. Goal is in quotation marks in that sentence because even if I fell short of the goal, as long as it got me to read more than I otherwise would have, I had no problem with it.
Shortly after making this resolution, I stumbled upon Library Thing and furthermore a '50 book challenge' group on that site, of other people challenging themselves to read 50 books in a year. I figured 'what the heck' so I joined and started cataloging my personal library as well as joined the 50 book challenge group. It has so far been a good way to keep track of my progress (unless I read 35 books in the next 2.5 months, (not gonna happen) I'm going to fall short of my goal considerably) and to get recommendations for further reading/reviews of books that I might be interested in.
Also, they have this cool 'will I like it' feature that calculates the likelihood of you enjoying a book based on what is in your library and your ratings for books you have read, which has so far been pretty accurate in my experience.
Anyways, just wanted to see if anybody else on TL is familiar with LT and possibly bring it to the attention of those of you that might be interested.
I made a TeamLiquid group so we can all meet-up there if any of you are interested, and if I ever do get around to reviving the TL Book Club I will probably do it at least partially via Library Thing.
So yeah, anybody interested?
Also; be warned, the majority of the user base seems to be middle-aged female librarians, just fyi.

Also, I doubt it, but if any mod thinks this is advertising or whatnot I won't put up a stink if you close it...unless you are pachi.

My friend got me to sign up on LT several months ago, but I haven't really gotten around to using it much. University is such a huge time sink, for the past year I've reading something like 1/10th as much as I did in high school.

Looks like a really interesting site--thanks for advertising it!

Sounds interesting, I signed up, and joined the TL group too.

Yay, now I don't feel so weird being in a group all by myself.

And I just noticed you have a Vonnegut sig, we should get along

Doesn't Library Thing limit the number of books you can have in your library if you're a basic member? I remember running into something like that so I use GoodReads right now...
|
Yeah I think they limit it to 100 or something in that neighborhood. I hadn't heard of goodreads, will check it out.

it really depends of the kind of book you are reading

If they let you do novellas, it'd probably be pretty easy (read: reasonable) to make that goal in a normal working life.
When I read for pleasure, I wait to find a book I really like, and I read it in one session... Unless it's some kind of monster 700 pages... In which case I stay up very late each night plucking away at it.
Right now I pretty much have to read 5 books every 2 weeks for my classes, so I don't have time for pleasure reading. The worst thing is that I am not a consistently fast reader... I can read a blurb really fast, but I have no endurance unless I'm going at a turtle pace. I think it's because I'm critical of everything I read, so I need that time to think and ponder what everything means and what brilliant essay I could write about it... Which even if you can read fast doesn't change how long you need to think about it.
As far as book club... I dunno, maybe if you post about a book I've already read I can give my thoughts Or maybe in the winter for a week if something really interests me. Not the type to get into a routine though.

made an account but using the website is pissing me off. The stupid stuff loads slow and theres no mass tagging or mass adding of books. I wish they would simplify/make the user interface more user friendly.
