So having listened to the new Linkin Park song I thought I'd come here and console myself by writing about some bands that are truly awesome (And hopefully you aren't all too familiar with).
1) Neutral Milk Hotel
Now these guys (or guy) really deserve a blog of their own. With Jeff Mangum (who is them btw) now essentially a hermit, there is only really one album by them to consider - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - A concept album about Anne Frank that contains, quite frankly, some of the greatest music ever recorded. Loved by hippies, tax attourneys and Paris Hilton, you should definitely check these guys out.
This is the first song of theirs I heard, and remains probably my favourite today.
Gah, can't get over it, by this album if you don't own it. Just do it
Some call it pansy music. Others call it crap. But I like it. This is some 16 year old English girl singing quiet little songs in her bedroom. Isn't it lovely
One of the strangest performers of the twentieth century, with a bizaare mix of toilet humour, 30's blues music and baffling instrumentation.
His most famous album is Trout Mask Replica. His best is anyones guess, they all have something. If the link above works check out Moonlight on Vermont off of TMR. You'll either love it or shut down your computer and walk away.
4) Little Richard
Now I'm only including this guy because I hadn't come across him until 2 months ago, and wouldn't want anyone else to miss out One of the originators of Rock and Roll music, very famous, but I feel also somewhat neglected by todays media, who tend to over emphasize Buddy Holly and Elvis at the expense of Little Richard and Chuck Berry.
wait through the horrendous opening with John Goodman, this is one of his best songs. Just listen to that scream - just incredible!
5) Laura Marling
A clever little 18 year old singer/songwriter from England. Very good. Was actually a nice girl when I met her, and was probably the only musician I've ever seen who was more shy and embarrassed than their fan's . Alas I Cannot Swim was the best album of last year and most of her new stuff is also excellent. Check her out.
This is again one of the first songs of hers that I heard, and was quite impressed to say the least
6) The Hold Steady
A weird and interesting band. They have this heavy rock thing going on, but then the singer starts talking over the top of it and it gets odd. Definitely worth checking out if you like this song. If you don't I can kinda understand why.
Well this was a longish blog that I managed to get through without saying anything important. (score)
Hope some people like some of this stuff, most of these guys are on repeat in my itunes right now, and are making a week at university in which everyone but me is revising much more bearable.
Oh and if anyones got any other strange and anonymous bands to mention I'd be more than interested
I liked Neutral Milk Hotel, thanks for sharing. The others are kinda meh.. ^^
Some music I think more people should know of:
I have no idea how to spell their name nor the song name. I don't have any idea of what any of it means, neither the lyrics. But it's so awesome ^^ German music ftw :D

I know. It's hardly original anymore - but then thats how it should be

Yeah I dunno if I can agree with some of the posts out there... "life-changing" "best album ever" "I see the world differently now" etc. but it is definitely a great album, the more people that hear it the better
Neutral Milk Hotel is awesome (I heard Jeff Magnum is/was going to tour singing NMH songs, is this true?), The Hold Steady's older albums are awesome (not a huge fan of the newer one, although it's still decent).
Music I think others might like: My Bloody Valentine (Loveless BEST ALBUM EVER), Asobi Seksu (new album I hate hate hate, other two I love love love), Resplandor (shoegaze band from South America).
I'm liking The Hold Steady so far, thanks for the recommendation.

Zomg, I have to check out Resplandor if you love My Bloody Valentine and Asobi Seksu. Two of my favourite bands ever.
- with the exception of Little Richard, none did inspire me BUT do more of these plz, I enjoyed ur comments/critic - also awesome site, http://hypem.com/zeitgeist/2008/artists (ya sorry, had not seen it before, I am old)
Lately I been listening to Erik Mongrain, living proof that french speaking Canadians in general own the shit out of other Canadians (@ everything) + Show Spoiler +
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqyLvadDojQ sublime guitar slap, amazing guitarist and even more amazing music composer, takes originality to a new level

Cool! I find Resplandor's songs are a bit repetitive but they have some really nice riffs to go with the shoegaze (a la MBV) and hey, if they've had concerts with Robin Guthrie they must be decent. :D
Might also want to check out lovesliescrushing. I won't pretend I can get into even a majority of their songs but some I find beautiful: Dreamy female vox, walls of sound, what's not to like?

Hmmmm, most shoegaze I can't get into, including lovlieiscrushing I'm afraid D: The slower and more ambient stuff I especially have to be in a certain mood for.
I lean more towards the more upbeat dream pop than true shoegaze most of the time. Loveless and Citrus are two of my favourite albums ever though. One song I can't stop listening to right now is by Maps, although the youtube sound quality does it no justice whatsoever:
