Right when I cam to TL this morning a message warning me came up from rogers, my ISP. They say..
"Our records show your household has reached 75% of the 60 GB monthly usage allowance provided with your Rogers Hi-Speed Internet Express service.
You will receive another notification when you reach 100% of your monthly usage allowance."
From the link provided in the pop up:
"To continue to meet your needs for speed, reliability and continuous improvements to the network, each of our service options now includes a usage allowance. Usage is measured by the amount of content transferred to and from your computer when it’s online.
The majority of our customers are on plans that meet their needs and should not expect to go over their monthly usage allowance. If you do go over, you can pay for additional usage on a monthly basis, or change your level of service so that it meets your online needs. Measuring usage this way more fairly reflects how our customers are using the service and allows us to maintain competitive monthly rates for all of our customers."
I don't know how long this has been in effect for, but I download a lot of movies and music and 60g for one month just doesn't seem like a lot, keep in mind this is for the entire household which is like 4 computers.
|
Yeah, it isn't a whole lot. It will probably seem pretty poor 5 years down the line.
But how far into your month are you?
My hope is that as companies start to roll out fios, this kind of shenanigans will go away due to the competition.
|
It's been like this for a long time... I guess it's only become apparent recently as the amount of downloading has increased dramatically for everyone.
|
Dude, I have an 8GB limit. When I pass that limit, my ISP cuts my speed from 512kbps to 128kbps. I can choose to keep the original speed though, but I'll have to pay extra per hour T_T
Edit: 3 computers in the house btw

Download limit? I'm happy for my broadband now

My ISPs in the usa (cablevision and then verizon fios) have both never gave me trouble about bandwidth... not sure if I've used anywhere near as much as I did in college though...
|
I sister is with an ISP gives a 200 GB bandwidth limit. She is a true pirate, the real deal XD.
|
Yeah, I upgrade to the 95 gig limit too... It's such fuckin bullshit though. I miss the days when I could upload and download as much as I pleased. Then again, the internet also went out for hours at a time randomly. I wish Rogers would just invest more money into their service instead of just telling customers 'yeah, we set our standards too high so now we're gonna give you crap.' Sharing 95 gigs with 6 people sucks.
|
Some ISPs in america are like this. Time Warner is rolling out some stupidly low caps in some places, but in most places TWC is uncapped.
|
I haven't received any shit like this in New York o_O
I thought bullshit like this only applied in college campuses -_-

the 95gb one is about 7 dollars extra but youll get it for like the same price as 60gb for the first 3 months or something.
60gb is bad and I would always go over with a few days before my billing cycle ended, and sometimes I'd go way over and end up paying $25 extra which is the max overage.
But yeah it has definitely affected how I download things, I don't just randomly download shit anymore I asses whether or not I really want it

of course Canadian's are crying, in a crappy European country like Portugal you have unlimited traffic both ways at 24mbs for 20euros during the first 24 months and then for 27.5euros after.
in Ontario we get 10mbs with 95G traffic limit for $60 +3$ modem rental per month. it's bullshit

@ Australian ISPs: Please give GTR his internet so he doesn't force me to watch any more cheesy Korean MVs.
Or that cooking show, God that guy drives me nuts.
