StarCraft: Battle of the Fans-sites Semi-long post and may not interest some.
We're all fanboys of a particular SC community at heart. Whether it be TL or GG, VG or SCD, WGT or iCCup, we all rally primarily behind a single community of our own choice. There are feuds, there is drama, and there is flaming, but they are all purely for fun (at least we'd hope so) since we're all essentially supporting the same great franchise.
However, wouldn't it be fun to finally settle the differences on the field? A place where TL's graceful ability to "win the internet" can be tested on even playing grounds against GG? With that said, I have an idea for a browser-based mini-game. This game would be simple and easy to access, with main goal of allowing each individual SC community to flex their manpower.
How it would work is for 30 days, four times a year (for each season, such as fall or winter), the field would be opened. During this time frame, a 16x16 block grid would be accessible. Each block is a sector, and all the sectors combined would be the all-encompassing map. So the obvious goal is for a community to try and conquer as much of the grid as possible. At the end of the 30 day term, the winning community would be the one with the most control over the grid and be announced the winner for that season (ie. "Fall 2009: TeamLiquid.net"). And the 60 day waiting period would begin until the next season so things don't get stale or stagnant.
This is where the main interaction starts. As previously said, each block is a sector. In these sectors interaction is done through a series of simple clicking and voting.
This process is similar to MyMiniCity.com, of which TL already has a city and it can be seen here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=64038
Just like MMC, there would be unique links for controlling a site in each sector which is explained below.
Restrictions: - Every IP gets 2 clicks every 5 minutes. - Every IP gets 1 vote every 20 minutes.
Clicks: There would links for each action. The actions are as follows.. - Increase unit supply - Harvest mineral ore (random 4-16) - Harvest vespene gas (random 4-16) - Build a building (counts as 2 clicks) - Build a unit (counts as 2 clicks) - Perform upgrades to attack/defense
I tried to keep the game idea simple so I can program it within a few days, so as to not overwhelm myself and end up not finishing it at all.
Comments/critique appreciated. :D
Edit (explanation for votes): Votes: After a poll is initiated (anyone can issue a poll start), a 1 hour window will open where votes can be cast. At the end of the time frame the winning vote will be enacted. The possible polls are.. - Attack another community. - Change diplomacy with another community (ally or enemy). - Send resources or units to another sector for your community. - Send resources to an allied community.
|
sounds interesting if it looks good and has an addictive factor, i'm sure it'll be a great success
i'm also assuming there would be a method to attack the other sites? or is it just a race to fill up all the sectors also, what are the votes for?
|
Oh forgot to explain that part! Thanks. :D

oh wtf its spartan :O
uh i think you should go ahead and do this, see how it turns out because if one of the other communities picks it up and starts owning us we might get some motivation to play

Lemme guess, every transition screen would be ' VILEGAMING ' and then when each season ends it would be ' BROUGHT TO YOU BY VILEGAMING ' then if it ever becomes popular/noticed [it won't] by blizzard it will be claimed ' BY VILEGAMING '
Honestly? Why wouldn't we just pit starcraft players against each other like we've been doing. Why are you trying to model a game after a game, why not just play the game that the communities are formed around.
Just recognize some sites are superior in different aspects. It just happens that TL happens to be #1 in much more of those aspects.

I never use transition/splash pages, I never plaster "Brought to you by" or any form of it on any publicly shared creation of mine. You're missing the point. What is wrong with having a little distraction from the usual routine that is StarCraft? Why do you think others have hosted unique tournaments (UMS tournaments) or events (TL Attack, community showmatches, clan wars)? For entertainment outside of the normal. And it isn't a secret that many people on, on TL for example, don't play anymore but still actively post on the site and interact with the community.

Can you guess the common ground? Oh right, starcraft.
Stop lying to yourself, you plug vilegaming to the point of utter annoyance. Even the admins have warned you about it.
You asked for criticism, here it is: Your idea is flawed. It won't be popular, and a lot of people aren't interested in something ' kinda like starcraft ' when they can load up starcraft.

You know what is more annoying than me plugging every now and then? People like you that are on "lets flame Spartan for plugging his site" bandwagon. The admins have asked me to keep stuff about new sites, like this thread, in the blogs and that is exactly what I'm doing. Everyone plugs sites at some point or another. I could go into the whole "at least I'm providing for the community a free service for entertainment" rant, but I'm sure through your 4,000 posts career you've seen that discussion already so I need not go further. And apparently you haven't grasped that concept which is why you're here trolling.
Why play DotA or WoW when a person can play SC?

You are a retard.
Have fun with this project.

Someone brought it up to me by PM that there should be some sort of differentiation between the larger sites and the smaller ones. So I began to think and came up with this..
Sites with an Alexa rank under 50,000 would get the normal restrictions (2 clicks every 5 min, 1 vote every 20 min). Sites with a rank between 50,001 and 125,000 would get looser restrictions (5 clicks every 5 min, 2 votes every 20 min). Sites with a rank over 125,001 would get the loosest restrictions (10 clicks every 5 min, 5 votes every 20 min).

Sounds convoluted and sort of useless. Maybe some people like this, I don't know. I've never played the other game you mentioned and so this doesn't appeal to me.
I'm all for inter-site competition but as far as I can see this is not the way to go.
If you can program well and want to promote inter-site competition, make an all-staff starleague! that'd be awesome. have a season (ladder or team based, whatever) and a final tournament. put up stable streams if you've got the time and skills and an intuitive website with rankings (or use iccup, whatever).
thatd be a much better and more popular use of your time imo

this is great, im a d- user too, 1-600 1 point. and i would find this a perfect way to use my 1apm.
