Both of them have come off as moderating influences pitching their candidate to the middle. That's fully expected for Walz, that's the entire point of his existence on the ticket, but it's a surprise for Vance. He was supposed to go wildly off the deep end and he did the opposite. Imo a lot of people would have walked away going "he's not as bad as I thought..." It won't move the needle, of course, but it's still a win for a guy who was absolutely toxic to the average voter beforehand.

When asked, I'm sure he'll say that Vance won though (just like how Trump pretended that Trump beat Harris in their debate). To be fair, there's one round of back and forths where I lost track but I'm pretty sure Walz went first but then they tried to end with Walz, and I think it was appropriate for Vance to be allowed to give a rebuttal before moving on. So in that instance, I was okay with Vance trying to cut in to say his piece. Generally speaking both candidates respected the rules of the debate, and I think it was far more substantive than the gong show of the presidential debate where Trump cut in to get the last word on absolutely everything. I said it before, but my favourite part of this debate is the moderaters had the discretion to stay on a topic a little longer if it seemed like the candidates had more to say. That is far superior to the last one where it was short statement, short statement, tiny rebuttal, tiny rebuttal, Trump interruption. NEXT TOPIC. Rinse repeat. Stupid format. Give it to CBS again. ABC was garbage even without Trump's shenanigans.

As the hurricane continued to ravage the region over the weekend, the former president dismissed global warming in a Saturday speech, and the following day referred to the climate crisis as “one of the great scams of all time”. He had been quiet about this for a while, claiming that the way Harris/Biden were implementing policy to address climate change was a disaster, which was an effective attack line as it is hard to convince people to change. I wonder why he thinks outright denying climate change would be more effective? It undermines his points with anyone remotely concerned with preserving the planet for future generations.

Agreed. Apparently, I totally missed a line where JD Vance complained about having fact-checking during the debate - he said something like "I thought the rules were that we wouldn't be fact-checked" when he got caught lying in the middle of the debate, which went viral (along with his non-answer about Trump losing). I said it before, but my favourite part of this debate is the moderaters had the discretion to stay on a topic a little longer if it seemed like the candidates had more to say. ABC was garbage even without Trump's shenanigans. More debates would be cool, but Trump has understandably refused to get his ass whooped again. We probably won't see any more debates unless Trump gets really desperate.

I think he's going to continue peddling anti-science propaganda, like a denial of climate change / human-accelerated climate change, because he's not being effectively called out for it and his supporters really don't care that much. Despite it being an extremely serious issue, his ignorance and rhetoric and dangerous actions during his presidency and dangerous proposals in Project 2025 never seemed to make-or-break how undecided voters feel about him, either.

"Vice President Harris reaffirmed her support for legalizing marijuana Monday, speaking up on the issue publicly for the first time she became the Democratic nominee. “I just think we have come to a point where we have to understand that we need to legalize it and stop criminalizing this behavior,” Harris said during a nearly hourlong interview on the sports and culture podcast “All the Smoke” released Monday." https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/4907402-harris-says-she-backs-legalizing-marijuana-going-further-than-biden/

So many lives were ruined because of terrible drug laws.

They would strategically never dare interrupt the "complaining about issues that were in vogue 50 years ago." Nobody in the US gives a fuck about marijuana, the Republicans aren't trying to lock up stoners, name us the few and far between jurisdictions that even still go after weed. All the decriminalization has somehow not managed to make room in the criminal justice system and prison for all the recidivist offenders the US has. It's very interesting that when states ignore federal law when it comes to drugs, nobody bats an eye, yet if Texas attempts to control their own border when the federal government abdicates its sworn duty, they get sued. Hope he can turn his life around! Everyone deserves a second chance (and appeal). Republicans have been the most anti-legalization party in the US for the longest time. While their overall support today sits favorably at 62%, individual Republicans are still blocking it for personal reasons or due to internal miscommunication over the last few years. Their change of heart as a group came in recent years, which is of course very welcome. But the party as a whole needs to clearly signal this shift so the legislation can actually change as well. Until then people will continue to be arrested for victimless crimes. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-do-gop-lawmakers-still-oppose-legalizing-weed/#:~:text=A 62 percent majority of Republicans surveyed by Quinnipiac in

It's been curious watching Republicans try to have their cake and eat it too in real time, when it comes to posturing as the "rule of law" party. Trump has been very open about the crimes he's committed, and finally capped it off with a conviction of 34 counts of fraud this summer. His buddy Vance showed last night that he also doesn't seem to understand how the law works, guess it doesn't seem to be a requisite for Republican leadership anymore.

I would expect such a person to at least confess their wrongdoing to know that they have truly repented and wouldn't simply be a repeat offender. Trump seems constitutionally incapable of doing that minimal but necessary action. Where's his come to Jesus moment? How can we say he has rehabilitated when he continues to maintain the same lie that he never lost the election and he did nothing wrong with putting forth the false elector slate?

As if it didn’t subsequently come out that Russia did interfere to support Trump. It’s not the same but they pretend that it is. They do the classic trick of attempting and doing things that are so egregious that it sounds like you're making shit up when you call it what it is, just because it's so absurd.

If there's one thing Republicans had been consistent on until Drumpf was convicted, it was their support of Democratic prosecutors in their application of the law. From Chesa Boudin to Andrew Warren to Kim Foxx to Kamala Harris to Merrick Garland and the Obama and Biden DOJs to the FBI and CIA... it's only when they finally convict Drumpf of fraud to influence an election that already happened that Republicans cry foul and take back their unconditional support. July 13th, there were some loud popping noises when Drumpf fell at a rally. Pretty sure the well is poisoned at that point, Drumpf could come out as FDR tomorrow with a weeping apology and be met with "so now apologize for lying about xyz, too bad can't trust someone who admits to lying."
