In the end, you can name anything however you like. If you want to make an online-tournament for three Bronze Players and call it "World Championship of Starcraft 2 More Important than anything ever" that is fine aswell. GSL (which btw isn't the "Global Starleague" but the "Global Starcraft 2 League"...probably an Anti-Kespa-Thing?) always defined itself as THE Starcraft 2 Tournament, the place where the best can compete. That is what the "Global"-part of the name stands for. If you region-lock GSL even further than it already is, you lose that identity completly. They could do that, but it would kill even more of GSL than already died. And yes, GSL is already kinda region-locked, since you have to physically live in Korea...a rule that doesn't apply to the other regions I believe. When region-lock was implemented, it also wasn't "unfair" to exclude GSL from it, since there was so little point. Before the time of Serral, Reynor and Clem, did anyone really believe that foreigners could even make a dent into GSL? It was a fun little gimmick that mostly Scarlett and Special used, nothing more. Well, current GSL is part of and gives points towards the esports WORLD cup, so it can be region locked just like old WCS and not lose its identity then, no? As for region lock, I fail to remember when it was implemented in its current iteration, but whether it was 2016 or 2017, you either had Lilbow win a WCS EU against the koreans (EU 2015 S3), or Neeb winning Kespa Cup (2016). Either way, yes people believed, even back in the day of Stephano they believed even with how one sided it was, and either way it's still foreigners qualifying for code A / code S and taking money from smaller koreans players who can't compete with the big dogs. People like Nightmare, Speed, Creator (), even Zoun before he broke out, getting their cheque taken by Scarlett, Special. Doesn't help with motivation, and reminds very much of old 2013 WCS except the other way around. You can always argue there weren't new korean players so it doesn’t matter (and I would tend to agree), but a situation like that doesn't help breed new talent. | ||
