Just watched the Exilecon race. + Show Spoiler +It's nice to see that Tie23he delivered and proved he's the best. While it wasn't his best time apparently, he won with quite a big gap. Sad they didn't have timers, but I believe it took him slightly over one hour to kill A5 Kitava. He wasn't always leading too, but he slipped out of Havoc's reach in Act 3 and onwards with way better boss kills ( + Show Spoiler + for example) and sick skips in Act 4 especially.
Also I hope Chris Wilson stands by his words that there will be races in 2020, I love watching them and I used to love participating in the races, mostly the special ones (Endless Ledge, Descent, Descent Champions).

As someone who's watched most of the streams, I feel like Exilecon was a pretty great event - lots of exciting changes (not only with 4.0 but also the leagues until then), informative panels (I recommend watching all/most of them, especially ones with Jonathan, Neon and Rory), wide selection of guests, a wonderful display of skill with the race.
Getting to see how each of the streamers experiences the demo was also interesting (and entertaining). Think Kripp played the longest (marauder), Mathil went with Ranger, Ziz rocked Witch, Quin "God melee gamer" tried marauder, while Rhykker sort of fumbled with Witch. Even though the last two were kinda noobs, they still provided a nice perspective on how a new player might find the game.
While most will probably focus their hype on the 4.0 campaign, I'm more excited about the new mapping system that we'll be getting quite soon. I even remember a discussion in guild chat (approximately one week into Blight) about how to make the end game more diverse/enjoyable/meaningful. Any thoughts now after seeing the trailer for the expansion and new info? Personally, I'm hopeful that this will make grinding feel less repetitive and more satisfying, though it might turn out to be just slightly different from what we have now.
I'm glad they're making gems great relevant again yet surprised people aren't talking more about the gem experience transfer thing.
Also, looking at the YT vod, the winning time in the race was about 1h and 2? min. Isn't this the new record?

They might change things around but at the moment I'm really looking forward to the gem/item changes. As an ssf player there's atleast one item every season that I'd love to try but I won't because I need the fusings for my "main"-chestitem. Of course I could very well run into a situation where supportplus-gems decide what best to do with my time but I expect not to be as restricted as I am now.
Great event. What is there not to love about real emotions and passion? Every three months I'm in awe how much this company does for and change in the game.

God I hope the game slows down with PoE 2. I am currently playing Path of Diablo and to me combat is more enjoyable in that game.
I will be checking out 3.9 for sure to see how new endgame looks and plays. If I can collect enough will to farm through random one shots I might even try to fight a boss or two.
What I wonder is what is going to be difference between PoE 1 and PoE 2? Just different campaign to get to endgame and access to different ascendancies? Or will PoE 1 still have PoE 1 graphics? I know both games will use new gem skill system as they talked about how they need to come up with a way to get all the standard character links to convert into new system.

Same graphics I would assume
Ascendancies are obtainable (38). Whenever you gain one, it will be added to your pool. New skill gem system New skill system
and I would suppose a lot more to come. Beta not before end of 2020 etc

I saw they explained how things like Cast on Crit gems will work, but did they also explain how that would work on gear?
As cool as the new gem system is, it would be sad to lose items that enable 7+ links via things like Cast While Channeling affixes.

All the announcements got me hyped to play some more this league, time to practice playing a CI character. With how boss-centric Metamorph will be a build like cold dot occultist should do quite nicely as a starter.

PoE2 is just PR talk for really big update, same engine, no reset of standard, all old content still there, you wont get to choose between PoE1 and 2, when it comes out PoE1 simply becomes PoE2.

Dont know about whole engine but at least completely new graphics (new renderer, physics based stuff, new model rigs). But yea, theres no choice between Poe1 or 2, rather you choose which story mode you want to play until you get to maps. The endgame stays the same and is shared. Cant choose the new ascendencies in old story until youve completed the new stories with them to unlock them and vice versa.
That's a good point about the 7+ links on items btw. It would be a little overpowered if it stays the same and the affix gets applied to every single gem you have in that item. So say you have gloves with the affix "level 20 faster casting" and they have 2 sockets. Then you basically have two six-linked active gems that get the benefit, making it two 7-links.

PoE 1 story will have updated graphics at 4.0 release and as seen at Exilecon Act1 already looks different in 3.9. Not sure if it will be exactly the same as the PoE 2 story, but I can imagine it.

The former image from reddit shows how it will be. If I remember correctly, they're also trying to make the 7 acts about as long as the 10 acts so it's not a faster journey.

They are continuing to iterate on their engine, just like they have been since the game came out. Theres no doubt PoE2 is a huge update that makes sweeping changes to the game, but theres no way in which it is a new game, or a sequel to PoE, which is what the PoE2 name suggests.

I just hope 'iterate on their engine' involves an update that doesn't require steam to download 12GB for every patch.

It's a bit of both. My understanding, which is shaky at best, is all of the game data for PoE is stored in one big archive file (you can find this file in the PoE install). When you use the base client and there's a patch you download a modification to that file that then gets applied. For steam I believe they don't allow this method of patching and the only option is to download whole files, so you get the whole archive file every time it changes (basically any patch).
Making matters worse steam will download the file then replace it when it's fully downloaded and verified, so not only do you need to patch 12GB, you have to have 12GB spare to hold the old and new files simultaneously.

The reason it happens is that almost all the content of PoE is in one big file called "content.ggpk." The standalone client is smart enough to make piecemeal changes to this file, so doesn't need to redownload parts that are remaining the same.
The Steam updater is not this smart: it just checks for any files in your install that are different from the version on the server, and downloads any files that have changed. Since content.ggpk changes with every major patch, Steam redownload it every time.
You can say that Valve should make a better updater that works more like the standalone version, but I'm guessing making piecemeal changes to parts of a file requires a bunch of game-specific knowledge about how those files are formatted, and they're avoiding risk of bugs by just redownloading file-by-file. At the same time, GGG could restructure their installation so it doesn't put all it's content in one big file, which would also fix the issue (this is why games other than PoE mostly don't have this problem). I'm not sure why exactly they don't do this, but I'm guessing it'd be harder than it sounds for whatever reason.

7L "problem" can be solved by changing these mods to be something like gives +4 levels to socketed Faster Casting supports.
