Now there are probably better people to give you actual tips, but i can at least tell you what to expect. For a long time, I was absolutely terrible at getting chords to sound (especially on the more difficult fingerings). It really isn't a matter of effort, but experience I've found. No matter how hard I tried to make my fingers go the perfect way to make sure every string in a chord sounded, I couldn't get it to work. But now, a month or two later, I can do most considerably easier. Something else: learn tabs. They are quite easy to understand, and once you know how to read them, you can find music for most every song you can imagine on the web. This is tremendously helpful because even though finger exercises, strumming+picking patterns, etc. are all much more useful for making you a stronger player, its easy to lose motivation when weeks in to practice you have nothing much to show but scales and patterns. There are tons of ridiculously easy songs out there, if you look for them, that are actually quite recognizable. Motivation is definitely one of the most important parts of learning guitar (especially teaching yourself). Even though you may really want to learn it, it can be easy to lose the willpower or interest with just exercises. What I started out doing was searching the web for some guitar learning websites, and I found a few (none too great.) I learned a lot of the fingerings and notes and what not at that time. I also did a lot practice exercises. Since I already knew how to read tabs for the most part, I also started looking for songs that would be easy for even the noobiest guitar player. Since then, I've gradually found harder and harder songs to play (not really difficult stuff, just slightly harder than the like 2 chord songs I started out with.) Now, with my personal experience out of the way, I'm actually also interested if there are others who have good tips on websites/books (because, like I said, I'm still learning as well). | ||

1. Technique Well, it depends on what style of music you want to play. I, for my part, am a metal guitarist, so I use a lot of muting, bending, tapping, hammer-on, alternate picking and sweep picking. Muting: Bending: Tapping: Hammer-On: Alternate Picking: Sweep Picking: Practise: The most important thing when it comes to practise is regularity. There's no point in playing the guitar 3 hours on two days of the week. Repetition is key and therefore, you should practise on a daily basis, if possible. Also, under NO circumstances, play things faster than you actually can. Just start slowly until you can play it flawlessly. Then, speed up a bit and continue to play it at that speed until it's sound. If you don't follow this rule, you won't learn it properly and your technique will be flawed. Hope this helps a bit, just come back and ask any questions, if there are some. | ||

What? that's all i did when i started playing guitar, learn all the cool songs i know :p just keep it fun, yes you should practice on a regular basis, but even that gets tiresome invite a friend over to play, or join a guitar club/ take lessons, it'll keep it fun. also what guitar do u have(plan on getting), electric is easier to learn on, but (like me) acoustics are awesome :o, base guitarists are pretty sick too, but most people prefer electric. | ||

No dont skip chords. If you're doing fine with scales then you should be able to get the chords down. Just make sure your hand positioning is correct. I really dont know what your background is in music so maybe you can give a bit of info? Its been said numerous times, practice is key. Dont get discouraged  Do some everyday but dont over-do it...when you feel tired then take a break, try again the next day. If you dont you could start to form bad habits and your performance wont be at its best. Keep trying with the chords. You'll be able to play more music knowing them and your guitar performance will be much stronger. | ||
