I thought round 1 was close, not too many strikes thrown, just dancing. I gave 4 to Diaz, thought he landed a few more that round, and then 2,3,and 5 to Silva. It was certainly entertaining to see these two go at it, but I honestly didn't even care for who won, it was a great show, and we got to see Diaz out dance(taunt) the dancing master.
Thinking about the actual fight though, I now think it makes even less sense for Silva to get a title shot after this. I don't think Silva showed anything new, or any improvement for himself this fight, and it makes no sense for him to fight Weidman again. Diaz came up from 170 and had a 5 round battle and was still unfazed by the end of it. I think people have figured out Silva's game, and I don't expect Silva to have any more of those incredible knock-outs against the current top guys.
I mean most people thought this was a sure win for Silva, and you can list out all of Silva's advantages going into the fight, be it size, striking, thai clinch, etc. But when the fight actually started, all Nick did was not lead with punches, and Silva really just couldn't do much. Silva made his career countering people who ran in with punches, but the instant people stopped doing that, the fight gets much more even.
So yeah, I don't think Silva has much chance against Weidman at this point so I'd much rather see him get matched with like a Luke Rockhold or something. I'd much rather see Weidman take on the other top guys of the division, another fight with Anderson would kinda be a waste of time, taking potential interesting fights away for Weidman, who's recent extended downtime is just a bitch for us fans.

Lmao dana calling out on Vitor's bullshit.
|
So there's no "big announcement" from Dana, huh?

I don't like this talk about about Nick going 3-0 this and that. Dude lost to Condit in a very competitive fight, got laid on a ground for 5 rounds by GSP and stood and bang it out with Silva for all 5 rounds. All those were either title fights or, in Silva's case, a title eliminator. Dude's clearly still relevant; it's just really hard to make fights for him because he turns down fights. All the reporters were jumping on it like he's gonna get cut though.

I am so happy for Anderson back.

I really didn't like how Silva fought most of the match, but there were moments when he looked like he was hitting a gear I hadn't seen him hit in a fight before. The few moments when Silva was actually aggressive he looked dangerous.
Silva's fight style looks like he doesn't want to look like he's actually trying hard to win. Like if it ever looks like he's trying he feels he's doing it wrong or something.
When he was actually going hard it looked like for a moment he could walk right through Diaz but then he would just turn it off. What bothers me about it is both guys looked fresher than most guys do after 3 rounds at the end of 5.Any time a fighter isn't exhausted at the end of a decision fight I think they didn't try hard enough to win.
I'd rather see Diaz fight Weidman (obviously not happening after a loss) because at least we would know for sure it would be a fight and not a dance lesson. Styles make fights and the only time a Diaz fight isn't entertaining is when his opponent won't fight him (GSP)
I feel styles like Silva or Machida with no penalties for inaction are just pushing the sport towards what's killing boxing, which is people fighting to win boring fights on points.

Do you realize what Nick Diaz would have to do to be tired at the end of a fight? I'm not sure it's even possible.

Im not sure he is back.
After hearing him talk and what he said at the presser last night. It sounded like he had to come back from that injury for himself. But now that he accomplished that he needed to talk to his family and it sounded like he might retire. He was saying things like "he accomplished everything he wanted" and his family didnt want him to fight anymore.

Yeah it was more a comment on Silva, Diaz was actually more tired than I would of expected. though I'd probably buy a PPV 2x if Diaz actually fought so hard he gassed lol.

I also want to believe this, but I think you're describing what you want to see rather than what actually happened lol. I love Silva, but realistically speaking, he did not look or make me feel like I was watching the Silva who KOed Vitor, Okami, Bonner. At the end of the day, he couldn't faze the welterweight Diaz. This was certainly not the Anderson who was untouchable a few years ago. But I mean, what else can you ask for out of a 39 year old Silva, he's already given us an era to remember, and I'll long for the day when I can sit with my theoretical grandkids and tell tales of the great spider.

Former UFC Lightweight champion Benson Henderson will be moving up a weight class to fill in for injured Stephen Thompson to fight Brandon Thatch in the main event.Source can be found here. Henderson last fought Donald Cerrone on January 18th in a unanimous decision loss, though multiple media outlets scored the fight in favor of Henderson. Thatch will be fighting for the first time since November 2013 after multiple injury layoffs.

The fight reminded me a lot of the Maia fight, where Silva just punched Maia's face until it was bloody and swollen. A lot of people were screaming in that fight and in this one "Why doesn't he just finish it!?" but the difference in this fight was that he did make some legitimate attempts to hit Diaz with some huge shots, but Nick Diaz either evaded some of them, like the spinning hook kick, the front kick to the face, etc., or was able to block some punches, eat some punches and roll with some punches because he's smart and durable. No fighter in the UFC has ever knocked out Nick Diaz, and there is a reason for it, which is that he's really strong in his stand-up.
At no point was Silva ever "in danger" or look hurt. He completely dominated the fight.

|
Lol Silva popped for an anabolic steroid and apparently Diaz popped for...wait for it...weed. So, yeah, hope everyone enjoyed the fight because that's probably the last we see of them.
|
|
Damn! I was hoping Silva would retire on top. I suspected he was going to retire after this win anyway, but now it sucks he's gonna go down like this
|
I wonder if the PED usage was to help make up for the lost time recovering from the injury?
|
Well that explains why Diaz thought he won all 5 lol.
Nick popping up for weed is like a 50/50 coinflip on any given fight so I don't think people care too much about that. Anderson, on the other hand...
It's very possible that they used steroids for his recovery though. I want to see the statement from Silva's team.
|
I'm sure that is the reason he used - to help the healing process. Lots of major athletes have turned down the same path. Never a good idea
|
Well if the same injury happened to anyone (who expected to have an active life) they probably would of been prescribed steroids to help with a speedy recovery. Of course they probably would of stopped after he was recovered enough to be anywhere near fighting shape.
As for cannabis, that shit is just dumb. I guess fighting might be the one sport where it could actually be considered an advantage but come on...
Regardless, all these tests show are people who get caught pushing the limits. It's not like all these guys at the top levels aren't using one substance or another.
