As for cannabis, that shit is just dumb. I guess fighting might be the one sport where it could actually be considered an advantage but come on...

Regardless, all these tests show are people who get caught pushing the limits. It's not like all these guys at the top levels aren't using one substance or another.

Well when I mentioned recovery, I didn't mean injury recovery. I more so meant the use of PEDs as a way to make up for all the lost time due to injury, and the deal with muscle atrophy from lack of usage due to injury.

Yeah I was talking about the atrophy too. It's common for athletes (non-professional) to do so.

Last known major case of weed bust i heard of was Chavez Jr. getting popped in his fight vs Martinez. NSAC suspended him for 9 months and fined him for 900k, and the WBC fined him 20k and suspended him indefinitely.

Funny thing is he, too, lost that fight via UD

the positive test was a year after the injury...Silva got cleared for training months before.

these various athletic governing bodies try to allow for injury recovery as a proper use of steroids.

for example, the injection of glucocorticoids around tendons, into joints and into the spine are permitted.
the injection of these same substrances ( catabolic steroids? ) into muscle tissue is banned.

now, can a guy get a massive cortisone shot in his fucked up shoulder to numb the pain for a few hours in the traditional heroic lore of 70s NFL players?... i have no idea.

Well, it's interesting to note that 3 (?) fighters from the same camp have been popped for this, and Anderson didn't even use the recovery excuse, he just straight up denied. Bad move again, imo. I don't know how long it stays in your system, but I would have used the recovery route haha

if the UFC is going for the WWE image they're doing a great job.
a few PPVs the main event fighter fails a drug test and still fights.
now it happens again at UFC 183 with the main event.

and, in true WWE style we have the match on a PPV that ends in a double DQ.

this Sonnen interview is interesting in light of Silva's positive test.

more than just a banned substance for competition purposes
its an illegal substance period.
its side effects include more brittle bones
hmmmm

if Silva did in fact take this stuff then maybe his broken leg wasn't as big of a freak accident as we were led to believe.

If the shin makes contact with the knee with a high amount of force, the shin will break first. What are you on about saying it doesn't seem like an accident.

Edit: Reading back, my post seems a little hostile, but didn't really mean it in that tone. I just think people are reading WAY too much into Silva getting busted for steroids. Paranoid and speculating with conjectures is the best way to describe this debacle.

notice i said "as big of a freak accident"
it is a matter of degree not a "yes/no" or binary thing.

at no time did i say this was a non-accident.

the more brittle ur bones the less of an accident it is. ( again notice the use of degree via the words "more" and "less")
an example of this was Bo Jackson breaking his hip in a football game.
it seemed like 100% accidental at the time. with the benefit of time we now know it was not a complete accident.

"paranoid" = "irrational distrust"

according to a WADA lab he tested positive to 2 different steroids.
at this point distrust of Silva is rational.

I like how no one gives a shit that Nick was on weed lol.

Sonnen had some good points there. When Reem and Vitor were on the sauce they were fucking rippppppppppped. Anderson's body has always looked "meh" compared to other fighters when on the scale. Nothing special.

At the same time, it is not irrational to ask yourself if this is the only time that he got caught.

But what if he had to take 'roids just to maintain a 'meh' kind of body!?

then he shouldn't have fought. Questions might be raised about the past but w/e. He wasn't caught.

GSP climbs the GOAT ladder and surpasses him imo even though hes significantly younger.

Does anyone watch Jason Blaha on youtube? His channel is about strength training and fitness, but he has also done a lot of drug test administration in power lifting, and is a competitive lifter as well. He occasionally talks about PEDs in sports (but he also mentions MMA specifically) and he says that at the high levels basically everyone uses PEDs. The only reason that athletes get caught is because of mistakes/negligence.

I've read this from other people as well, so I'm wondering what yall think. Do you think this is true? Assuming it is true, does it affect your views on doping in general? What about how it affects Silva's legacy?

I know Blaha, he made the Ice Cream Fitness workout routine. As for my opinions on the PED-matter, I can't say for certain since I'd hate to make assumptions with little to no evidence other than a couple of fighters here and there testing positive for banned substances, but personally, I'd hate to think of everyone most professional fighters performing at the elite levels taking PEDs. Maybe I have a romantic view of the sport, but I'd like to think it's not just talent that gets an athlete to the championship level, but also discipline and a strong-hearted determination to get to where they want to be. Again, I'm probably being somewhat naive or in denial about the matter, but I'd hate to think that that is the case.

As for Anderson Silva, I posted this before, saying that I hate that everyone is being rather paranoid about the matter, but I do agree it creates some doubt over his accomplishments in the UFC now and definitely taints his legacy. Similar to baseball, players who hit 500 homeruns held in a prestigious regard. However, as is noted within baseball, you have the players who have been accused of steroids/involved with steroids/caught with steroids like Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, and Alex Rodriguez. Then you have the "clean" players, Jim Thome, Frank Thomas, and Ken Griffey Jr. It's pretty distinguishable who took PEDs and who didn't, and that's simply how they'll be remembered. "They were great, but they took illegal substances" vs "they were great, they didn't need illegal substances". Basically, he'll be remembered in the same line as Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen, and Josh Barnett, as opposed to Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, and Fedor Emelianenko.
