As I watched DreamHack's TY v MC game 3 and watched TY die I was sad.
"How could it be that a terran, 80 supply up... with more bases... could possibly lose the game? Terran, the race in Brood War where your opponent NEEDED to be up one base on you to be "even" (survive,) the race with the scariest 200/200 army in the game, the race that could blow any army into smithereens in seconds if your opponent didn't control with excellence!"
I sat in sadness...
"Blizzard should just add spidermines and make tanks like they were in Brood War and get rid of fucking colossus. I should post something angry about this!" I thought to myself.
"But no... everyone will accuse me of being a hater and tell me to go watch SOSPA if I 'want Brood War so badly'"
Hmmm. "What could actually be done?"
"Well.. get rid of colossus.. so I don't have to see useless vikings designed to counter one unit that makes an entire marine army melt in secon... no... no one will accept this... I'll still be labeled a whiner and SC2 hater... maybe if widowmines behaved like spidermines and came from hellions... er... still too BW for Blizzard and will cue the 'go watch SOSPA/starbow' posts... I know Blizzard will do anything to avoid taking ideas from broodwar... maybe if siege tanks... well... fuck... I have no clue how to make terran less fragile..."
Then it hit me. The perfect solution. The way Blizzard could change the game and still say "see, we did something different!" They can even fit it into lore. BLIZZARD STYLE.
Imagine Dustin Browder talking over the first LoTV gameplay preview... "Well after the protoss designed the powerful Immortal... Terran engineers were at a loss, their once mighty siege tank had been effectively countered... Well, we here at Blizzard are proud to give you a glimpse of the newly designed siege tank. The terrans have been hard at work and have given the siege tank the ability to move while sieged!"
Yes folks. The answer to the mech problem. Moving sieged tanks. The factory for terran will now be like the robotics for protoss. Armies of tank/marine/marauder will jossle for position against armies of colossi/HT/zealot... each player punished severely for extending too far into the range of their opponents highly mobile splash damage dealers (tank and colossi respectively.)
When a terran is 80 supply up, they will kite zealots and HT with their mighty moving siege tanks and melt through ridiculous numbers the way colossi melt everything terran currently has up their sleeves.
Both with ridiculous range and splash damage. Both one moving blob of pure destruction. With the fast action Blizzard demands of SC2.
"But what about Zerg..." I thought... well... easy! Add an 11 range lurker into the game that burrows and unborrows quicker than the current swarm host. Maybe it can move while burrowed as well! OR, create a "super hydralisk" (think marine>marauder/ hydralisk>"super hydralisk") with long range that spits acid which inflicts splash damage in a manner similar to colossi. Hell you can make it as tall as the collosus so air to air units can focus fire them!
This way all the races will have to move back and forth on the map for minutes at a time with no battle, both afraid of overextending, waiting for the perfect moment to inflict a 10 second barrage of complete ownage the second their opponent makes an engagement mistake, leading to a game where once your opponents army is destroyed you can 1a your way into their main and destroy everything protoss style.
Truly then all the races will be balanced and Starcraft 2 will come full circle. In the manner Blizzard intended. And they can say "we didn't do it BW style!"
I will accept royalties for my genius ideas Blizzard, feel free to contact me at anytime. I am surprised you haven't already reached this conclusion yourself.
