Yes, the ending is that bad folks. She says some bullshit about he went into seclusion as some sort of punishment on himself for being 'human' and dealing with the pain he causes his loved ones (deb).
I'm not making this up, it's that bad. Wait, are they implying the inner monologue was the Dark Passenger ?
I believe they are in this instance because its convenient for them, I can't imagine throughout the entire show that has been the case.

I'm not making this up, it's that bad. So they basically poured some paint on a canvass, then they later explained that it's not vandalism, it's art.
If anything, Dexter looks like he's ready to chop off some wood in the very last frame of the episode.

Man Dexter became so melodramatic lately. And I mean the character, not the show. "You're not even worth my knife so I'm going to just have you arrested!" Deb gets shot. "I destroy everything I touch! I'm going to fake my death and leave my child without a father!"

I think the writers were told by showtime to set up a story which gives dexter a fresh start with every connection to the series cut. So they can hire a new cast and start a new show with an existing fanbase (although many fans were probably lost during the process)

Well, the dark passenger probably had to go because james remar is not in anymore. I really think that they will actually reboot dexter, that's why they basically made the season only to detach dexter from everything.

Dex had like 4 romance already, I can't even imagine how could they intorduce a new one. Maybe he turns gay, but then again, what more could they do with Dex?
Also, I doubt Michael C. Hall would want to continue. Everyone aspires for something more.

It would be a new actor, also why do the romaces matter? I feel like the romances were the things which made the show bad. Showtime probably looked back and realized that season 1 is the most beloved. I also think it's clear that dexter Is a complete psychopath now, with faking his death he has lost all connection to his old life.
It's just my theory and would explain the bad season. If they really wanted to end it for good they would have done it like Breaking Bad with much more Drama. If they actually thought this would be the best way to end it then they are fucking retarded.
But if it gets rebooted, it makes sense. The new series would probably focus more on dexter hunting other killers (I don't think he would ever abandon the code) and less on Dexter internal struggle with his feelings.

I'm pretty sure if we'd make a poll both season 2 (double-romance) and season 4 (romance overload with baby on the board, and a tragic romance ending) would beat s1. The 3/4 part of S1 was veeery boring, and I only watched it because 1. it was an interesting setting, so I was curios ( I was also told it would get better) 2. the cliffhangers were quite good. I almost fell aslepp during those "samba"-moments, but then there's a barbie head in Dexter's fridge! It's tru though that the last quarter of S1 was brilliant, and S2 could ride that momentum, and even surpass it.

They definetley were good Seasons (although I hated Lila). But still, after Ritas Death they introduced Lumen and then Hannah and neither was really accepted by most viewers. So why not go another route. Because I really would find it pathetic if this is the best ending they could come up with. The entire seasons goal was to convince Dexter to leave his world behind, so why not do something with him if they let him survive?

Even if you convince me by a miracle that the last episode was decent, you'd have to do it for every episode of season 8 for me to consider it an ok season.

I enjoyed the season and the last episode as well. Dexter should've died in the end, but whatever.
I just wonder which shows you guys watch that are better than Dexter S8 was. Obviously Breaking Bad, Game Of Thrones and Modern Family. And then? Boredwalk Empire?

Orphan Black is extremely good and underrated. I'd recommend simply picking it up without reading much about it, that worked really well in my case.

Currently, I don't watch much outside of Boardwalk Empire, GoT, The Walking Dead and ofc BB. I'm slowly getting into House of Cards and will eventually return to Homeland and Mad Men (the latter 2 seem boring but I feel the need to at least finish the first season). All of those I'd rate higher than this, yes even s2 of Walking Dead was better.
If I went with past shows I've watched though...
Sopranos, The Wire, Oz (this one sucked in the end too), The Shield, Parts of Six Feet Under (first season bored me into not watching anymore, but was still better than this), they were all better.
I hung in there with Dexter mainly because of the past, but also because it becomes somewhat of a comedy in how bad it is around ep 7 of this season. It's like the same reason people like The Room.

I don't mind the whole dexter giving up everything he has worked for and lives in complete solitude to protect his family/getting close to anyone and hurting them deal... I think it is fine.. If it happened differently. He apparantly has no dark passenger now so starting new with Hannah and his son wouldn't put them in danger, because he should no longer be a danger. Barring that, how they got through this season to dexter making that decision was just sloppy.
They had the ending in their minds for awhile, that deb would die and dexter would see how he hurts everyone he loves and that he would take the greatest punishment, living alone in solitude without all that he has worked for. I think death would be too easy, and i like how that was their plan for awhile. But my god they could have done it in a better way.

But it's not the same type of show, so I understand that you might not like it. Homeland, even if the second season wasn't as good as the first, is still miles ahead Dexter's 8th season. And Mad Men. But If you don't like Boardwalk Empire chances are you're not going to like Mad Men(It's even slower paced than Boardwalk Empire). I don't like to compare drama with comedy, but I get more enjoyment out of one episode of Parks and Rec(20 minutes) than out of every other show bar Breaking Bad.

Yeah...this ending wasn't so hot indeed :'(

Tbh there are plenty of shows I don't watch(that is to say, I've watched first 5 or so episodes) which I'd say are better. I think most people got a connection to Dexter however because it used to be good. If I could, I'd erase the last 4 seasons from my memory(and perhaps the last 3 minutes or so of season 4, since can't end it on a cliffhanger).
I also expected either a great ending, all bets off, Red wedding style or a happy ending. Instead it's some weird of the middle of the road, somewhat sad, incredibly badly written, huge plot hole terribad episode which doesn't even give a closure to a series I've watched for 4 years almost exclusively to get(well okay, I didn't expect 5 to be bad and still had hopes for 6).

Project Runway. The drama is much more believable.

I also doubt he'd ever play a gay character. He's way too manly.

He has played gay. He was in Six Feet Under, playing the gay member of the family managing the funeral business.
