In addition to regular fantasy proleague, the wonderful staff of Teamliquid have decided to hold their own little fantasy competition. This one works a little differently in that it will be draft mod and more similar to traditional fantasy football leagues. Basically, each player can only be owned by one owner, and to trade, you must trade with other owners. This blog will keep you updated on our progress and allow you to cheer for your favorite staff member! Oh and if you're interested, the full rules can be found here:
The Rules
+ Show Spoiler [Staff FPL rules] +
Summary
This will last through an yet undetermined amount of proleague. I'm thinking Rounds 2-5 can be regular season while Round 6 can be play-offs.
Everyone who wants to play is going to split up into 8-man leagues and draft teams, like they do on other fantasy sites for sports like basketball, hokey, football, etc. You’ll have spots to fill on your team, like Zerg players, a Proteam, a flex position a bench to move players in and out of the starting lineup and so on. Each week your team will face off against another team and the team whose lineup scores the most points during that week gets a win. At the end of a predetermined number of weeks we will enter a two-week “playoffs” with the top four teams in each 8-man league to determine the fantasy winners.
General Rules
Eight participants is the ideal size for a Starcraft Fantasy league. There will be a cut to the top four teams for playoffs after a predetermined week of Proleague. Playoffs will last two weeks and be single elimination. There will be a third place match the same week as the finals match.
A week lasts from right before games begin on the first night of the week for Proleague and goes until the last game finishes on the fourth night. A match between league managers lasts one week. Match pairings will rotate every week. No two participants will play each other twice until they have played each other participant once. Unlike regular fantasy proleague, we will not be redrafting teams every round.
Drafting
Order for drafting will be chosen randomly and proceed in the following format until every team has drafted 12 players. Once a player or team has been drafted, no one else will be able to draft that player to his team.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
And repeated until each roster is full.
Each participant must submit their own draft rankings for their top 88(8*11) choices in order to determine the order in which players will be drafted to team unless a time can be agreed upon for a live draft. There can be some people who want to live draft while the rest just submit rankings also. If a participant does not submit a ranking and/or does not show up to the live draft, the default rankings will be used for that participant.
Note: Drafting by default rankings or with a turned in set of personal rankings will still ensure that you have at minimum two players of each race and at least one proteam by your twelfth pick. So your options from best to worst include:
Default Ranking:
+ Show Spoiler +
There are exactly 100 Players + Pro-Teams. This means there will always be at least 4 players never picked.
Lineup & Bench
There are 8 positions. At any time, your team must include at least 2 Terrans, 2 Zergs, 2 Protoss, and 1 Pro-Team. The Ace position can be filled by any player(non Pro-Team). Think of your Pro-Team as just another position.
11 Spots Total per Roster
8 Spots in Lineup per week:
2 Terran
2 Zerg
2 Protoss
1 Ace (any race, aka flex position)
1 Pro-Team
3 Spots on the Bench (any race or team)
The maximum number of players/teams on any roster is 11. Any participant may choose to have less than 11 players if he chooses, but never more.
Lineups will be due prior to the first scheduled Proleague match during the week. Lineups may be submitted at any time prior to their due date. If a lineup is not submitted by the time it is due, the lineup from the previous week will be used. Once the deadline has passed, lineups may not be changed until the following week. Because you're just comparing scores with your opponent and not literally going up head-to-head, there's not big advantage to submitting your lineup after your opponent.
Example Line Up submission
Each participant’s roster, both the lineup and bench, will be viewable by all other participants in the league.
Matches
Every week, you will be matched up against another player randomly. You will not be matched up against the same player a second time. until you match up with every other player at least once.
(Scoring will be the same as regular fantasy scoring)
If Bisu scores 10 points in a given week for regular fantasy proleague, he will score 10 points for staff fantasy proleague.
+ Show Spoiler [Example Match-ups] +
If your score total for the week is greater than your opponent's, your win the match and receive one match victory in the final standings. In this example, GTR, Manifesto, Hot_bid, semioldguy each received one match victory. After one round, we should end up with something close to this:

Trading, Dropping, and Adding
Trading between participants will be available until a predetermined deadline(10 minutes before the first match of the week on Saturday). You may offer or accept trades between other participants in your league.
Players may not be traded or dropped if they are currently active in your lineup. Players may be traded or dropped at any time if they are on your bench. If they are not on your bench they may only be traded or dropped after the week is complete, and before the next one begins. Trades and drops may be proposed at any time, but will not be honored until the players in the trade or drop meet the above conditions.
The commissioner is allowed to veto any trades he deems unsportsmanlike. This will prevent one owner who is struggling from helping out a friend who is near the top. For example, A trade of Flash for ssak will generally not be honored.
Pickups will be allowed until a predetermined deadline(10 minutes before the first match of the week on Saturday). In order to make a Pickup there must be an available spot on your bench to place the player you wish to pick up. You may pick up a free agent at any time. When you pick him up, he will be placed on your bench.
Waivers
Waivers is a period where everyone can try to stake a claim to player(s), but they have to operate by a pecking order. The lower you drafted, the higher up on waivers you are and thus you're in the best position to pick up an undrafted/dropped player. When you successfully complete a waiver claim you go back to the bottom of the pecking order.
All players that were undrafted will first go to Waivers to give you guys a fair opportunity to claim them and drop players that you find undesirable. Any player that is dropped must go through waivers for a few days before they become a Free Agent. When a player becomes a Free Agent, they're up for grabs - first come, first serve. If you have multiple Waiver claims, you must order them.

Playoffs
There will be a cut to the top four participants who will proceed to the league playoffs. In the event of an equal record between two players, the player with the most overall points throughout the league will be given the higher rank. In the event of a tie in total points, the participant who has the highest scoring player is given the higher rank. If this is also tied proceed down to the next highest scoring players until there is not a tie. In the extremely unlikely event that everything is exactly tied, a coin flip will determine who is higher ranked.
Playoff matches will not be ended in a draw. If the score between two participants is equal at the end of a playoff match, the participant with the higher scoring “Ace” player is determined the winner of the match.

The Initial Draft
We just had our draft a few hours ago and here's our initial teams. Note that semioldguy and Ver were not present and had submitted lists beforehand of who they wanted to draft. Also, picking order was randomized at the start and followed the serpentine order(1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1). Please also note that that I accidently messed up Ver's first two picks. He actually wanted sOs/RorO over Baby/Stephano. As a compensation, Ver will automatically win any tiebreaks at the end of the season for playoffs.
Here are some of our thoughts on how picking went and who did the best with picking. More will be added later as I get them.

Getting the first pick definitely changes the structure of a fantasy team. I am pretty happy on how my team turned out, I have a couple of the best/most reliable players and what I believe to be the strongest pro-team. While my lower half is a little weak, such is the case for most of the others as well and my stronger players should be able to carry me. No one can have a solid team all the way down, some risks have to be made in getting a player who has a chance to rise at some point. I think my team has potential for that. I like having a couple extra teams on the bench, even if it isn't likely they will come in very often or at all. If one of them gets hot or has good matchups for the week, they could prove to be a better start than KT Rolster, even though KT might be the better team on any given week.
That being said, the competition will be tough. A lot of these guys are more in tune with the scene than I have been and might know a few things that I do not. But my team will crush them anyway. Here is my ranking of the teams:
1 - semioldguy
2 - TheEmulator
3 - shz
4 - Pokebunny
5 - KadaverBB
6 - Plexa
7 - monk

Going into this draft, I knew I had to suppress my giant EG-TL fanboy heart and think a little bit more logically. I also knew that these guys probably had more knowledge about these players than me. Getting a good team was going to be tough. Luck was on my side though, I got second place to choose a player. Picking Flash was a no-brainer, I totally wanted to pick HerO, but let's face it. Flash has way more proleague experience and he is fucking Flash. It also annoyed Pokebunny to no end, so that made the pick even sweeter. I was hoping that HerO wouldn't be picked up (I know slim chance) and I might get him later. Don't worry though, I insulted plexa when he took him. I went with Jaedong because he is Jaedong, not much to talk about there. It also annoyed Pokebunny again, excellent.
Then I got EG-TL because having a strong team seemed like a good idea. After that my knowledge was almost exhausted. I took JYP because I had him on my anti-team and that didn't work out very well for me Took me minutes to figure out my next players, I was stalling quite a bit. I just ended up picking players that I already had on my regular fantasy team because why not). While the draft was going on, the other guys kept telling me that my team was really really good and that my picks were smart and whatnot, apparently I kick ass at this. My last 4 picks were seriously random, I picked Idra because he is Idra, I don't even know Turn and Bear...
When all was said and done I ended up with the strongest team. At least that's what the other guys are telling me. I apparently did everything right and stumbled my way into a very good position, so YAY to me.I wish I could have gotten some more EG-TL players, but having players on different teams is probably better for the All-Kill format anyway. My fanboy heart bleeds.
My goals:
1) Not be last
2) Beat plexa because he picked HerO
3) Get first and show Hot_Bid that he should be rooting for me instead of plexa.

Overall, I am not the happiest with my team after the first four picks were finished. I would have also liked to get ahold of someone like Flash, or even Rain, but being third in the draft that was very unlikely to happen. Getting Fantasy made me very happy, and some of the other staff were quite jealous over that pick. EG-TL is probably a great pick as well, but that could change at any moment. For Jangbi and Revival, I am pretty happy, but like some of us have already said, it depends on whether they reclaim their top form this time around or continue slumping. Either way they will play and get points. For my last picks, I don't mind Huk and Last, but the rest were pretty bad now that I look back on them. Being Dota 2 staff on TL, I don't always get to keep up with PL as much as I would like to, therefore I didn't realize Motive/Leta hardly play anymore. Also, my Zenio pick was more of fanboy EG-TL pick than a smart pick. He is good though, don't get me wrong
My ranking of the teams:
1.KadaverBB: Flash, Jaedong, EG-TL, enough said about that.
2. Monk: He lives, eats, and breaths fantasy proleague. So I am sure his picks are good. Also, Taeja is awesome.
3. Pokebunny: Poke got some great aces, and has a well balanced team overall.
4. TheEmulator: See above
5. semioldguy: Rain and Stats are fairly strong, however the rest are quite risky.
6. Ver: I am just mad he got Baby, so I put him at sixth place.
7. shz: I really want Major to do well, but he just got back to Korea, so it might take him a bit to adjust. Who knows though?
8.Plexa:Not really sure what was going on here.

I came out of this draft thinking about how big having an earlier position was. Imo, the first 2 or so positions are by far the best, especially considering the various tiers of proleague players. As for my team, I have probably also have one of the most balanced teams, which was my intent. On average, all of my players will play more than the players of other teams and they all have potential to score some points. Stork is my big question mark and I'm gambling a bit by picking him, but the only picks I would have considered above him were Dear and Speed. Also, in retrospect, I may have wanted Roro over SKT1 and just settled for WJS instead.
My ranking of the teams:
My ranking of the teams:
- KadaverBB: Getting second pick was really quite huge for Kadaver, especially since semioldguy wasn't present to abuse his first pick placement. His team, besides Jaedong and JYP are almost exactly what I would have picked in his position. Turn might not play much and Jaedong will be absent sometimes, but other than that, KadaverBB is the clear favorite.
- Pokebunny: Another really good team where many players can potentially play. Poke actually got three quite strong "aces" in Bogus/Roro/Effort. He did this by forgoing KT/SKT/EG-TL. His supporting lineup of Trap, hyvaa, Reality, and free is also extremely strong.
- monk: Already analyzed my team above
- semioldguy:SonGduri, Puma, and to some extent, Skyhigh are his weak points. Otherwise, his team is quite solid.
- shz: shz probably has some of the weakest aces in herO[jOin] and Action. However, his strategy of picking both KT and SKT could pay off.
- TheEmulator: Having both Revival and Zenio seems like these players would step on each others' toes, especially when EG-TL has both Jaedong and Stephano. Also, Motive won't get to play much.
- Ver: Stephano is an iffy pick and Relying on Bisu as one of your Protoss players is questionable. Also, Ver is the only player who didn't get a KT/SKT/EG-TL/Woongjin Stars team.
- Plexa: Really strange picks form Plexa, getting s2 so early and having a really weak Terran lineup with Thorzain/Mind. Hero also isn't as particularly strong as an ace.

Overall, I'm mildly satisfied with my team... got some solid players and didn't make any really stupid picks, but really hated my pick spot. The top two were clear, and the 3/4 were clear, so the fifth spot really had a lot of options that were a tier below TaeJa/Fantasy imo. Still, Bogus and Effort are a solid 1/2, and was happy to get RorO where I did. Later picks were mostly clear cut, didn't choose to make any big surprise picks like Plexa, so the rest were just safe picks. I really like Kadaver's team and spot - Flash, JYP, Speed, Shine were all good picks by him, and even Jaedong was a solid pick that late (#15). Monk's team also is pretty solid top to bottom, even though I disagree with the Stork pick. Wish I could've picked up KT in the third round, but RorO was not a bad pick by any means. Overall, my team power rank would be:
- KadaverBB
- me/monk
- me/monk
- semioldguy
- shz
- TheEmulator
- Ver
- Plexa

Picking went horribly because players like reality, hyvaa, speed and revival all got picked before I could get them. I originally planned to get EG-TL first, but because of a last minute rule change (doubling the number of teams) I delayed that pick. But then my draw position fucked me over and I missed out on EG-TL. Woongjin, however, isn't a terrible team so it's not the end of the world. s2 was probably mis-timed - I do believe he is a good player but I probably should have picked Jaehoon and/or hyvaa instead. I'm happy that I have STX as a backup team because I think they have a lot of potential. I picked Hero as my second pick more because I wanted to annoy Kadaver than for his skill - in retrospect this wasn't the best move because of how stacked EG-TL is. I have to hope that Stephano/Taeja are considered 'stronger' than Hero and hence hero gets played more...

Oh my. That was pretty interesting though I'm sad about my draft position, at least it wasn't 8th. I didn't had a strategy planned beforehand but I had a mental list of players I hoped to get, and wasn't able to get most of them. I think especially my later picks were acts of desperation. I lack good second tier players and there especially a good second or third terran. Should have gotten turn fe instead of major, but this season is more than this round so I hope he can do well later. My double-first-tier-teams-strategy could be my savior. Especially these both teams have a good all-kill probability in winners league. Let's see how it goes.

I don't like my team at all, possibly because it is not my team. Nor do I really understand the rules, so who knows where this will go!
As with Monk I feel that having the top 2 draft positions is immensely more advantageous. Rain and Flash are easily the most reliable point getters here by a large margin. Outside of those, I actually feel 8th was a good spot, especially because my peers saw players very differently than me. I feel Shy is the 3rd best player in proleague, but he was snapped up at the insanely low pick of 13!
I judged that the top two picks should be on a Terran and Protoss, depending on the order. Zergs are all underrated right now for proleague because kespa zergs still aren't quite refined, but it's only a matter of time before they become unstoppable. Grabbing a top Terran is a must, because mid-level Terrans are so much worse than mid-level Zergs or Protosses, especially without being able to rely on the Arkanoid crutch as in the first round.
1. Monk- Monster team that is way above anyone else. Taeja + Shy is the best double aces out of anyone and having T1, Stork, hon_sin, and Hydra is probably the best support for it too. Huge steals.
2. Pokebunny- Clear #2 as well. Bogus, Effort, Roro is a potentially high scoring combo, though each player is a bit less reliable than one would like. Woongjin is also a great pick. Only is hurt by the lack of a top tier Protoss. Picking Effort over Shy hurt a lot imo.
3. Semioldguy- Great but not spectacular. Being first pick is very advantageous. Rain will probably be worth almost two of any other player combo. Also managed to snag KT, and Crazy-Hydra/Dear are quite underrated supports. Only flaw the total lack of competent Terrans.
4. KadaverBB- Too much hype imo. Flash is great of course, and Jaedong could do anywhere from solid to spectacular depending on how much he can refine his play. But he doesn't have SKT1/Woongjin/KT, and of his support only Speed is particularly notable. JYP and Best might steal a win or two but that's probably it.
5. Me- Baby, Soo, and Zero are all extremely good but it's downhill from there. Have no good Protoss which is killer. Kespa Protoss have done the best of any race because of how easy the learning curve is. Cj does normally do well in Winners league but is really a wildcard at the moment. I'd count myself lucky if Stephano gets more than a few points.
6. TheEmulator- Possibly picked EGTL too high. Fantasy historically does worse in winners league and plays Terran, which is also more troublesome in winners league where he only can get so much from being sent out on Arkanoid. His supporting cast is also pretty weak; most of them can steal wins here and there but probably won't be major point earners.
7. shz- Don't have the knowledge to determine whether kt/skt1 combo will make up for only
having one top tier player and one good sidekick (action), though Bbyong and Jaehoon will steal an odd win here or there. How major went in the 7th round instead of last pick is beyond me.
8. Plexa- Soulkey is nice, and wooki and hero are both wildcards with potential. From there it's downhill though. S2 is hardly reliable, and I'd be surprised if his Terrans pick up a single win. Terminator in the 7th round was quite a solid snag fortunately.
