To whom it may concern,
I started playing Starcraft 2 in january of 2012 after watching some casts on Youtube (Husky, you are responsible), VODs and things like that. I only played Broodwar's single player, but I had some experience with Warcraft 3 some years ago. In SC2, I saw a new game and a very interesting learning experience. Plus, I saw some names I knew among the players - Grubby, Moon, Lucifron. From the stuff I watched, I was most attracted to Protoss - blink stalkers (which were kinda similar to my beloved WC3 crypt fiends), psi storms, strong units (albeit for more money). Seemed like a perfect fit.
I got the game, read about some builds, played my placement matches and I got placed into silver. As a new game, it was great fun, and I was learning through every game. The next season, I went to gold. There, I stayed for some time. I understood the counters, watched tournaments, replays and streams of pros and tried to replicate builds as good as possible. The number of builds was very limited, though, and I kept losing whenever I tried something new (... oh, those stargate openings...). But again, I was still a noob, new to the game - my macro was sub-par, my map awareness terrible.
But the grass is always greener, so I tried Zerg and played in gold for about two months. But after the initial high, I felt like it wasn't the race for me. More often than not, I just got rolled early to mid game, and my impression was Zerg is pretty limited until Lair is done. In ZvZ, I loved the ling/bane wars, but in ZvT and ZvP, it was all the same - expand, drone, drone, drone, defend with just enough units, lair... and then the game started. Not for me.
So I went back to protoss and I immediately started doing better. My macro was a lot better, I understood positioning better, the new builds I learned were tighter and suddenly, I wanted to give my life for Aiur again. I won. I got to platinum. I won some more. And then, at the start of this season, I got to diamond, which came as a huge surprise. In diamond, I stopped, my winrate about 50%, maybe slightly less. I don't feel comfortable, though. Why?
---- The actual balance/game design comments ----
The protoss deathball playstyle. I really don't feel good when I march with upgraded chargelots, archons, collosi and storms and ROFLSTOMP a Terran. It feels unfair, almost. I watch the GSL, see those great Terrans attacking three different locations at once without worrying about defence, and I think to myself: "Why can't I do this myself?". Why can't I harras more? Why can't I avoid direct engagements and take little advatages that will eventually win me the game?
In PvT, it's usually the Terran who drops, and the Toss who defends. But apart from zealot backstabs and SKT.Rain's storm prism (which I try to replicate), it's always the same (counting out the cheese, that is) - expand, get one type of AoE, defend the drops, expand again, get a deathball, find a reasonable position, win.
I actually love PvZ, at least, until the Infestors and spine crawlers are up, with broodlords morphing somewhere close. The Warp prism seems more useful in this MU, since Zerg has a lot more things you can snipe, you can spread them thin, sentry drop...
In PvP, I don't know. It seems a bit dull. We have cheese, the robo-twilight-stargate triangle and expand builds, which mostly lead into collosi wars. That's about it.
---
I'm wondering: Terran rewards multitasking and micro-oriented play. Zerg rewards macro and army positioning. Protoss rewards... what exactly?? Building the Robotics Facility, Robo Bay and pressing the C button, I guess. And HotS seems kinda far away still.
I tried intentionally losing some games, playing random, but it doesn't seem right. And I feel embarassed when I lose to someone in gold as random. I feel like I can't be even decent with the other two races. I don't even feel like I deserve to be in diamond in the first place.
Sure, I still win some games, but it's not like I'm having tons of fun in PvT and PvP. I'm starting to wonder... what if the grass is greener on the Terran side? So here I am, a Diamond protoss. I started in Silver and I believe I got into Diamond by... choosing Protoss.
(Thanks to anyone who took the time to read this terrible wall of text, I needed to get this out of my system. Perhaps, some of you might give me a piece of advice on how to have some fun with the game again.)

You just don't like the playstyle of protoss that is just macro and defending, if you want to be aggressive you either have to do see what MC does, or switch to Terran.
|
Terran is perhaps the most mechanically demanding race, but also the most aggressive, so if you don't like the play style of Protoss and have the time to keep your hands fit, go Terran.
|
Maybe you are asking the wrong question. Perhaps the wrong race chose you?

I have 2 accounts. One is my terran account, the other my protoss account. Both are below master's, but above bronze (meaning I'm not the best out there, but not the worse either). Both are in the same league, playing the exact same level of opponent. If your Terran is that much worse than your Protoss, it's because your Terran is awful - not because Protoss is inherently easier.
Thanks, though, for reinforcing the idiocy that Terran have been spewing since 1-1-1 stopped dominating the pro scene: that Protoss is the easiest race in WoL.

I have to echo this. OP your voice resonates like those of Aiur to me. Your graceful success is admirable. I think you have to thank your humble attitude and thirst for challenge for your success.
In my opinion Terran and Protoss are just different. I like Terran big army micro a lot more. It rewards my pride more. 1 t a box right click left box right click up. 2 h h (holding) 3 e e (siege tanks siege). Super fun. (tl dr i like to stim and dodge)
Protoss has a lot of tactics they can use just liek terran..Maybe you just want to look into that more? I think you choose your race. like the sorting hat at hogwarts, somethings will suit you, but ultimately you have the choice if you want it.
So yeah, i think you're just out playing these terrans but if you want it to be harder maybe terran can help you with that? (not saying terrans inherently harder though). Terran is not that different than the other races. I think a lot of what a race means to someone is in their imagination.
Drops, loading bunkers, 2 rax, banshee micro, lifting buildings.. lowering depots, walls, turrets.. its the funnest race..GO terran GO!

Why so mean? My goal was not to reinforce that statement, and I don't think it's true - or that I can tell if it's true. I feel it's easier, because Protoss was the first race I played, and my SC2 experience went from that standpoint. Please, understand that I'm a bit frustrated now. Maybe if I picked Zerg or Terran first, my view would be different.

THE thing that attracts me most about Terran is the variety of openings. CC first? No problem. A quick MM attack? Sure. Hellion drops, banshees with or without cloak, marine/tank/banshee all-in...

I sort of get your latter point. Protoss, especially in PvT, really can only go Twilight/Robo. That said, there is no reason why you can't change it up and throw in a carrier build (like MC vs Kas). To me, it sounds like you are bored playing the race in the same way, game after game. That happens. But, there is no reason for you to keep doing that. Try out different openings vs T (for example the old 3 Gate pressure, or Sase style FE to pressure). If you FFE vs Zerg every game, try out 1 Gate and 2 Gate FE builds and see how you go. Of course, you will lose a lot at first, but you will be having fun if your mindset is trying out new tactics and playstyles. Alternatively, if your ladder rank is important, purchase a smurf and use that to mess around with Protoss - or, for that matter, the other races, including random. Good luck, mate.

Just stick to the one true race man
BROTOSSES UNITE!
|
play whatever race you have the most fun playing. this is a game, made for your enjoyment. enjoy it.
|
I've switched to terran after a year of protoss (I got bored with the race). It's definitely harder but also the most fun race imo
|
I still don't have a favorite race. I play random... my favorite matchup is ZvZ though. Seeing the zerg tears when I do a speedling all in is priceless. PvP feels just "wrong" imo though.
