That being said I just gave this presentation in class today. I kinda can't believe I said this crap or didn't get kicked out of the class. The assignment was to just pick a topic and talk about what's trendy, for 5 minutes. I quickly paraphrased the Korean parts for you guys. There weren't any rules, so I picked some ridiculous generalizations and said that they were the reasons why Korean's preferred certain haircuts. lol. I'm sure this thing is ridden with mistakes (which is why I'm in class), so I'm preemptively stealing the Korean typo-police's rights to being chodes about it. This is what I made:
This says "Korean hair style"
This is just the contents of what I was going to talk about. I tried to go through it quick so it wouldn't give away the funny parts right off the bat.
Men's style, "club guy style"
Girls style, "bangs", "crazy club chick style"
Long hair, "Short hair", "Long hair"
Dyed hair
It basically says that long hair styles used to be really popular because all of the famous singers had it. H.O.T. was the most famous band 10 years ago and every single guy and girl wanted to look like them.
These days, men's style is pretty cleaned up.
"Reasons for short hair"
1) "I have a lot of money". Guys with short hair think "I have a lot of money" and their parents suggest this style for their kids.
2) "I'm a genius". In order to study well, I need short hair. Long hair gets in my face.
3) "I'm a mature man". This style for guys shows that they aren't kids.
Now, long hair is rebellious. Every girl has long hair but it's not hard to see guys with long hair, too. Now guys with long hair can often be seen from a distance. (Picture of my old band)
"Reasons for long hair styles"
1) "I hate business style"
2) "Music is better than people"
3) "FREEDOM!!!"
In Korea, high school students usually wear uniforms and there are regulations for their hair styles. So, high school students care a lot about their hairstyles after they graduate.
People dye their hair in a variety of colors. (People from my Facebook feed, lol)
"Reasons for dyed hair"
"I want to be different than other people."
"I want to be a special person."
People want to look different so they have a variety of different hairstyles. They want to get people's attention. Crazy hair colors is like a spotlight for people who love attention. They think "People won't see me unless I'm special".
Bangs (Literally "front-hair style" in Korean, LOL) are really trendy. Bangs are a trend and cute. Girls frequently have this style, but lately dudes are super into it. Sunny from Girl's Generation is really cute. (no shame)
Chicks that go to night clubs all the time are called "Juksuni" (which basically means club ho's). Club ho's frequently change their hairstyles to show themselves off. This style is both pretty and sexy.
"Reasons for club ho style"
1) "I can't see anything anyway" (picture of girl with hair in her face)
2) "I'm the best". "I can have all the boyfriends." "Getting dudes is easy."
3) "I have good fashion."
Club-guy style. (slang, not positive) "Kulnam" basically means club + guy = club-guy. Club guys frequently have messy/dirty looks, but it's a trendy style.
"Reasons for club-guy style"
1) "I'm awesome". "I don't take showers and it's okay, I'm still cool."
2) (Gangnam Style lyrics) "A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays..."
3) (More Gangnam Style) "A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes"
(Facebook bro picture)
In Korean: "Thanks!"
I mean, it was pretty awkward when I was doing this. I'm one of the only white people in the class, so speaking Korean is already weird/hard enough. The teacher was taken off guard and confused at the slang and pretend quotes. She asked me, "where are all your sources of this information?" and I just told her it was my best guess. I don't know how well that went over, but the Koreans in the class skating by for easy credit were laughing about as hard as they could with their hands over their mouths. I'm not really sure if anybody felt like they should laugh or not during this thing cause the teacher is such a try-hard at being authoritative. Single Korean woman probably approaching age 40 ...still not married!?!? You better wear armor to deflect this kind of angst... Oh well, she's still cool. She's kind of like an "auntie" waitress that punches you in the arm at Korean BBQ for forgetting to use respectful ~요 form or something, then gives you extra side dishes.
I made sure to put myself in the negative club-guy pictures to self-deprecate a bit since it all could've been taken the wrong way. The funny part is that in a really stereotypical way, this whole PowerPoint is true. Just go to Hongdae or Gangnam for like, 30 minutes. 5 minutes even.
Whatever, we'll see if I get a good grade or not.
