"Excuse me, what's your citizen number?"
Robert looked up. Two LDP scrubs blocked his path. The crowd kept moving on either side of them.
"We'll ask you again, what's your citizen number?"
"Why do you need it?" Robert asked.
The men looked at each other, making a face of disgust.
"You don't need to know why. Now tell us your number or we'll bring you in."
Robert's mind raced. If he used a number he couldn't be sure it would work. He knew over two hundred different numbers, but he began to forget when they would expire. The LDP men began to get impatient. He knew he would have to use one.
"789-2554."
One of the men checked the number on his holopad. After a few seconds it pinged happily.
"Alright then, move along."
Breathing a sigh of relief, he made to move around them.
"Wait a second." One of them grabbed at Robert's arm but Robert pushed the man hard so that he fell onto the other scrub. As they laid sprawled on the floor, the crowds formed a ring and began staring at Robert. Robert felt everyone watching him and couldn't seem to move. He knew he had to run but seeing the two men struggling to get up seemed to transfix him. The rain intensified and as if a switch was flicked, Robert turned, pushed through the crowd and began sprinting away.
"Robert! Good to see you."
The warm air felt like a blanket. Robert closed the door behind him. "I ran into the LDP, Dex."
"And you're completely soaked. Let me go grab a towel."
As Dex hurried off Robert leaned against the door, resting his head with his eyes closed. That was way too close.
"Here you go." Robert gave his jacket to Dex. "They'll have may face by now."
"Then you'll have to lay low for a while. What number did you give them?"
"Julian Swan's."
Dex gasped. "But... you can't do that!"
Robert grinned, adrenalin pumping through his veins. "Well I did. Things are going to get really hot... really quickly."
