So recently I been at somewhat of a cross roads which has devolved into an unhealthy obsession with deciding which of the two afformentioned reasons I should play a game. The two games in question are currently Dota 2 and League of Legends, my goal is and always has been to compete in amateur tournaments as I don't find games I am not at least somewhat competitive in boring. I played some lowbie CAL leagues in CS 1.6, Participated in WoW arena tournaments wherever I could (mostly tourny realm) and now these two games have captivated my attention.
On one hand League of legends is a very fun game, albeit somewhat outdated. Every single person I socialize with in RL who crosses over into my internet friends as well as all my internet friends plays LoL at some level almost nightly, I sit in skype and listen while I sit there and play other games but they never seem to have the same magic as playing with friends. On top of that the LoL community is so active and full of constant news and interesting stuff. The gameplay itself isn't amazing but all in all its a fun game, I play almost exclusively AP.
Dota 2 however is a beautiful game, the nuances and small details make it probably the most fun game I have played solo in a very long time. Simply put I see it as the leader in ARTS games and the scene is going to explode on release. However I know zero people who play this game. I have roughly 600 hours into it according to steam, all solo queue and believe me when I say it's extremely tedious solo queueing that often. The scene itself is also extremely stagnant from a community PoV, almost no pro interaction, very few entertaining high level streams exist and the reddit and TL communities are extremely slow compared to LoL, this probably has a lot to do with closed beta and it will likely improve but I digress.
Should you play the game you find the most fun at a game level or play the game whose community you enjoy more until the other game catches up.

you should be playing what you like, and trying to get your friends into it as well

Playing a bad game for the community is not worth it if you are not having any fun at all.
If it is somewhat enjoyable than it is worth considering.

Well, the other one isn't gonna catch up if everyone jumps ship to the hottest game on the market.
I can't say I really appreciate the tragedy of your situation You should be able to decide for yourself what you want to do with your free time.

You're absolutely right, I should be able to decide for myself and I wish I could however extreme indecisiveness is something I have to deal with.

I enjoy LoL, not to the extent I enjoy Dota but I don't find it boring.

I've always played games because I liked them. (That's how I get into them) I slowly lose interest in it, but friends keep me in... My friends/guild kept me in WoW for an extra 2 years. (I was about to quit, then a friend started playing again and I started raiding again when he hit level cap) Then when my friends lose interest in that game, I usually follow.
All in all, don't "get into" a game you don't like if your friend likes them, if you like them good for you, if you don't, just look elsewhere.

I only play for the game content itself. Currently I play dota which has by far the worst community I've experienced, though the game is so good that it's worth it. If it was for community I'd probably continue playing starcraft, or perhaps smash bros melee which has local communities.

Wait till dota comes out of beta, then the community will likely pick up steam, otherwise just play what you enjoy more.

You can't play both?
Chill with your friends now and then, play DotA2 when you're not.

I like LoL, but I prefer Dota 2 I don't have a key so I only play at a friends house T_T I'm the kind of guy that likes to be ahead of the curve, so I would chose Dota 2 so that when it is released I'm close to the top already.

I play dota and SC2 because my friends play it. It's fun because we are somewhat competitive at the game. Owning or being owned then coming back to own the enemy gives me entertainment. It's also a good topic to talk about when your bored with your mates going 'Oh last nights game, that was mad ownage!'
I also try out the single player RPGs like Assassin's Creed, Skyrim, Fallout series. I don't particularly spend alot of time on it (maybe at most 5 hours playtime) as it's more used for my references at work (I'm a computer repairer and custom PC builder). It's to evaluate how power hungry games are and gives me first hand experience on how to advise my customers on how much to spend on their computer. I also like to see the storyline behind the game too which is fun to me.
I'm over the MMORPG phase now. I played Final Fantasy XI for a few years, tried out WoW, Lineage and realised how much better FFXI was compared to any other MMORPG released today. If I was unemployed/unmarried and fluently understood japanese, I'll definitely play Final Fantasy XI again.
