haha this is actually very true - for me it seems like republicans created huge problems by themselves in the process of wanting to defeat obama with this variety of, for the most part, highly obscure personalities. with the economy in shambles on main street and wall street doing quite well with tax payer money they could have had a perfect basis for securing a republican win with romney on the ticket. and there are several other inconsistencies where obama simply failed to bring "change". (foreign policy, health care, reforms on the financial sector ... the list goes on). the circumstances do not matter at this point because it´s an election and "bush did it" or "the reps always said no) won´t fly anymore. but newt gingrich as the knight in shiny armor - really? if this madness keeps on going I don´t see how they want to win ergo don´t see obama losing.

The hypocrisy seems pretty plain, but given how long Newt has been arguing for the no Republican should attack each other, ever. Will it come off as cranky? Of course, it's now to Newt's interest to hold to the never attack our own given his history and given his lead.
But then there's this one where they're having a little bit of fun:
I don't like this new ad. Its not ron paul's style. I'd like to see some more like the conviction ad and the newt ad, possibly about Mitt Romney flip flopping.
I'm still quite bothered by the fact that what sank his campaign was the existence of a mistress -- something completely irrelevant to his ability to lead a country. You can say ridiculous things for months, stumble and occassionally outright lie, show no understanding of the world, advocate widely discredited, destructive policies, and soar in the polls. But a mistress? Get out.
On the bright side maybe somebody has made a montage of him talking about the sanctity of marriage.
I still don't think that Newt will last, even though he is cozying up to Trump and Beck (...kingmakers?), after the scrutiny machine starts digging again and discovers and rediscovers skeletons; but I'm hoping they don't turn to Santorum in Iowa. Still rooting for Ron Paul but I'd still be surprised if Romney doesn't take it. Mitt, for such a seasoned and composed politician, really fumbled that Fox interview.
Sometimes I think this is a Idol contest. Its so strange to see everything centered around persons instead of parties or ideas. In my part of the world you don't vote for Romney or Obama, but the Workers Party or conservative party. they eye of the public is much more directed at the person, than on his or hers politics. The integrity of the candidate is more important, I guess.
The US Republican race is dominated by ignorance, lies and scandals. The current crop of candidates have shown such a basic lack of knowledge that they make George W. Bush look like Einstein. The Grand Old Party is ruining the entire country's reputation.

Yay, more tripe from another clueless European journalist. I love how only republican gaffes get reported and emphasized. No one ever talks about Obama's gems (57 states, anyone?) or general bungling (any time he's off a teleprompter). The real problem is the over-emphasis upon the faults or mistakes of the candidates rather than an honest analysis of what they actually are bringing to the table (and the American media is as guilty of this as anyone).

Considering the subject of the article is the Republican candidates, of whom Obama is not one, it seems fair that they focus on gaffes by Republican candidates rather than Obama.

There's a big difference between saying something that you obviously don't believe or think like Obama's 57 states and actually believing something that is completely ridiculous and absurd. All candidates people say things that they don't mean from time to time. Does Obama actually believe that homosexuality is against God's will as some of the Republican candidates do? Does Obama deny evolution? Has Obama ever once pulled the race card even though plenty of white news anchors have?
As for the actual topic, I don't see any candidate that isn't Mitt Romney winning the nomination.

It's just unfortunate timing that the majority of the gaffes that were mentioned were from the candidate that just dropped out.

The "57 states"-incident is all you can come up with in defense? Seriously? You must be trolling or something.

And you're flaming. He was just pointing out that with all the time these guys spend on camera, they're bound to say some stupid shit, and that this news source was focusing only on the Republican Foot-in-Mouth moments.
You know, posts like this are honestly the reason why many Americans on this site wish Europeans would stay out of threads like this. You don't see me or others going in the New Zealand Politics thread (for example) and shitting it up because I don't agree with the policies they have in place or other things that have happened. You're going to have to respect that things operate differently over here, as I do with many of the more "progressive" places in the world. I have no problem with you Europeans chatting here if you don't flame other posters over stupid shit, If you don't like something, just say you disagree.

I just want to point out how absolutely meaningless national candidate polls are.
4 years ago today, the national polls showed RUDY GIULIANI in the lead by a whopping 12 points, over HUCKABEE. John McCain, who was the one to eventually win the nomination, was tied with Thompson with a measly 13%.
Now state polls, an argument could be made about their reliability, but national polls are worthless. Not sure why the media focuses on them so much when they've been such horrible predictors.

The article didn't focus on verbal slip-ups at all. The points brought up in the article might be factually wrong or exaggerated, I don't know, and actually I would even expect that, but they can't be countered like that.
You know, I was actually trying really hard to find respect for the republican nominees this year, because I thought there must be something I miss. I have lots of sympathy for the US and I despise the nowadays popular anti-americanism, going as far as defending G.W. Bush in some discussions, which is an untenable position here in Europe. I liked McCain in the last election, at least to some extent.
And still, the more debates I watch and the more forum posts I read, the worse it becomes. The illogic of it all makes me go insane.
edit: the same would be true if I would be following, e.g., Italian politics i would presume, I mean who in their right mind would vote for Berlusconi

I'm in a similar situation. I have many American relatives, and I try to understand it, but from what I can see the Republican party is, frankly, insane. There is no justification for some of their beliefs, or their policies. From an outsider, watching these people get voted into office, or at least come close to it, seems completely mad.
