So far, university of Victoria is awesome. They seem to make living there heaven, so that students can focus on studying. The food here is amazing, and extremely cheap; most meals leave me completely full while only costing $2.50-$3.00. I've been doing the couch25k running program for last 2 weeks, so I am healthier that ever before -- I haven't done any cardio at all for 4 months. There are paths and forests for people to walk/run everywhere.
Pretty much everyone in my dorm only talks about drinking and partying; I don't drink or party haha. They are nice people though. My computer science classmates, contrarily, seem to be really awesome. I usually only get along with say, 10% of people, but I'd say in compsci it is around 80-90%.
I've bought an aeropress coffee maker. It makes pretty good coffee that is strong but not so bitter that I need to add sugar. It needs next to no cleaning, and ejects a completely dry puck of grounds, so I don't even need to leave my dorm room.
Last year, I was doing engineering, but I decided I really didn't like chemistry and physics. The work didn't feel rewarding at all. I also managed to fail math 101, and pull out of physics in fear of failing. I was used to doing homework the night before, or not at all. In math 101, I discovered it was possible to do well on every test, (75% ish) but still not know that material enough. Towards the end of the math class, it gets harder and harder to learn new things since I didn't know every aspect of what came before. By the end, I was in shambles.
This year is going to be different, however. Over the summer I discovered music, which helps me concentrate immensely. I couldn't sit down and do homework previously because I would just fall asleep. Armed with music and coffee, doing homework is pretty easy, and even fun if I am productive. I am going to be devoted to doing things right. I was in college before, but now I am in unrecoverable debt if I fail. Nothing shall burn me out with the motivation and learning environment I have.
I really love my teachers too. My math 101 teacher speaks with extra time between his words but has an awesome Swedish or Dutch accent. It is like having White-ra as a teacher. Sooo great.
In addition, now I have replaced physics and chemistry with programming courses. I love programming. If I had to compare math a programming to chemistry and physics, I'd say that chemistry and physics are like gluing a bunch of similar pieces of material together, while math and programming are like doing a puzzle. The latter two are much more methodological and fun.
My roommate is ok. He is from Cairo and is Muslim. I don't know much about that, I'm atheist myself, but he isn't bad to live with. The only thing that sucks about having a roommate is that I can't wake up at 5:30 am and play SC2.
Overall, I am really optimistic about this school year.
EDIT: Also check out my music in my signature.

Glad to hear you're enjoying UVIC. I just graduated from SFU, but I always wanted to experience school on the island.

The only thing that I got from this blog is that you're happy from being in uni, and you're disappointed that you can't wake up early in the morning (for whatever reason) to play sc.

Meals that leave you full while costing $3.00 .... sigh I wish the same were true for me. On another note, have fun with classes ^^ White-Ra as a teacher ... hahaha

Music is great, but if you're studying with other people, it can be both beneficial and not beneficial. You want to be able to ask people for help (something I tend not to do enough) when you need it. But you don't want to get distracted talking for twenty minutes (I do this a lot).

jesus... you wake up at 5:30 am to play sc2? also partying... i wish i partied more when i was in school

I used to. My sleep schedule was crazy. I could have woken up at 4:00 am, woken up at 11:00 am, go to bed at 8:00 pm, go to bed at 3:00 am. I often woke up at the middle of night for a few hours and had naps during the day. I think it gave me super sleep powers; I never got tired but always could go to sleep. I wasn't even tired off of 5 hours of sleep. I think it was because my body was so unsure of whether I was going to get 8 hours of sleep or not that I stopped caring.

You haven't even discovered the best part yet: attending SC2 club meetings during CSL season

victoria is beautiful, a friend of mine goes to UVic and my sister used to go there. It's a nice place, so much that he's probably going to stay there his whole life. When you talk about food, what exactly are you eating that's 3 dollars?

at SFU meals arel ike 5 dollars for a stupid tuna sandwich :| so jealous
|
um wow. at our university, meals cost around 8-9 dollars and it still sucks balls.

You have Frederick as your math 101 proff?
And yeah pretty much everyone I meet is a hardcore partier >.>

It was really funny I was playing while my rommate was hungover and he got up and asked me what the hell is that noise.

Well, it depends on the day. On the first day we had Steak, potatoes, and vegetables for around $3. I often have a big chicken Caesar wrap for $2.65. Fries with that are just 60 cents. Salads are pretty cheap too.
