10 Reasons to be Interested in Guild Wars 2

12-04-2012
Notification:

"Many of our community members are asking about how long the pre-purchase offer will last.
Pre-purchase will run up until shortly before launch. However, we also want to maintain a high quality of service for those who have pre-purchased and are participating in the Beta Weekend Events.
With that in mind, if we max out our beta server capacity, we may temporarily make pre-purchase unavailable until we can bring more capacity online. Bottom line is if you want to participate in the Beta Weekend Events, don’t wait. ~RB2"

If you are still unfamiliar with the website for pre-purchase of Guild Wars 2, you can find it here.

Guild Wars 2: Europe Guild

This thread will be for all European TL'ers that are interested in GW2. If you want to join us, this first post will give you an idea what you can expect from us and what we expect from you.

Guild Structure

+ Show Spoiler +
We are trying to keep the EU TL community together so there will be no structural separation between our hardcore and our casual players.

Hardcore players will stand out from the more casual players and make connections with like-minded people (i.e. you choose who you party up with and who you take advice from).
However, that does not mean that there is no place for people who do not have much time to spend on games and just want to clear content with fellow TL members.

Guild Wars is a game where everyone can contribute, be it a lot or a little.
Here is the place where you can do your part and and be part of something greater.

G4TV - Guild Wars 2 Beta Q&A: Why Should You Play ArenaNet's Fantasy MMO?

How we run things

+ Show Spoiler +
The guild will be run TL style, there will be officers/mods around who keep the guild in check. They will be able to either kick delinquents outright or contact someone who can.

We expect you to obey the TL rules (edited for GW):

1. THIS IS OUR HOUSE
2. THOU SHALL OBSERVE GUILD ETIQUETTE
3. THOU SHALL THINK BEFORE TYPING
4. THOU SHALL CONTRIBUTE TO THE GUILD EFFORT
5. THOU SHALL NOT SPAM
6. THOU SHALL RESPECT GUILD MATES
7. ENGLISH IS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE
8. THOU SHALL RESPECT YOUR ID
9. READ THE COMMANDMENTS
10.THOU SHALL HAVE FUN

GW1 HoM, interesting post

+ Show Spoiler +
Since some people are trying to get their points for the HoM (this is for 30/50 and some random information.) By the time you get 30/50 you will hopefully know enough about the game, to get your further ahead.

Ok. For an amazing guide to get you to 30/50 in a couple of weeks: http://www.reddit.com/r/GuildWars/comments/iu3qw/a_hom_guide_to_3050_aimed_at_beginners/

I see that Discordway and Sabway gets promoted here a lot... It isn't too bad, but play around a little with this:
http://www.gwpvx.com/Build:Team_-_7_Hero_Player_Support

The build may require a little bit of micro (Panic, Ray of Judgement, etc.) But it will pay of in the longrun, since you can solo almost everything with the above build. It is even possible to do DoA and FoW if you are carefull enough and pull slowly.

This doesn't mean you should copy this build, but try to get some inspiration from it. Look what feels good and look around what fits your style.

There are some other helpfull tools on that site.

Hopefully this helps some people

If you are interested in joining the guild you can PM Teemu the Viking, Bambilicious, Tyraena,Tsnib or Nylocke. You can also post your GW2 ID on this thread.

Guild Wars 2 Beta Q&A: Why Should You Play ArenaNet's Fantasy MMO?
+ Show Spoiler +
Can whole guilds queue up for World versus World, or is there some size limitation to single queues?

For now, there is no size limitation on how many people can queue up for World versus World (WvW) player versus player (PvP). So yes, whole guilds can queue up for WvW. WvW offers competitive gameplay on a massive scale in Guild Wars 2, and rewards will be similar to Player versus Environment (PvE) awards that players get from completing dungeons and instances. On the other hand, organized PvP players will be rewarded with their own unique armor and weapons.

Do the combat controls really do something new, fun in the MMO space?

I've got to say that I had almost given up on expecting anything new and innovative in the combat space in MMOs, but Guild Wars 2 (and Tera) have brought welcome changes. The combat in GW2 is fast and fluid, no matter which profession you choose. If you favor a caster class, there isn't any mana in the game, so you're constantly determining which moves to used based on their cooldowns. Additionally, the recently introduced dodge mechanic allows you to completely nullify any incoming damage, which offers an interesting take on action combat.

Did you find that the game really does make you want to aid others during play?

Since most of the quests I found had you simply helping "Person A" by doing any of three things, it really facilitated my desire to help others around me. There was nothing to compete for, since everyone got experience for helping the quest giver, as well as loot and money. Plus, the more you help others, the faster you can help the questgiver out and get the best reward possible. It's yet another thing that seperates GW2 from most other MMOs, since everyone is on the same side.

With so many skills being available depending on weapon choice, attunement, environment, etc., do skill sets feel crowded, or is the diversity exciting?

There are so many skills to unlock within GW2 it's mind blowing. Depending on if the player is a MMO veteran or a casual player will change their outlook on the skill sets, but I think that the diversity is really exciting.

In Guild Wars 2, whenever you change your weapon you get a new set of skills. Even if you just change your offhand weapon you'll get new skills. Some classes can even change forms or attune themselves to different types of nature in order to cast new spells. I find that it's a lot to take in at first, but once you find the weapons and spells that you like, everything works just great. Plus, since the UI is so well designed it never feels crowded with ten rows of ability bars like you'll see in alot of other MMOs these days.

From what you've seen so far, is the world larger or smaller in comparison to WoW's Azeroth or Rift's Tellara?

From what I've seen so far (which isn't nearly enough) the world is very large and there's always something new to explore. What's great is the waypoint system, eliminating the need for a mount. The waypoints in Guild Wars 2 are essentially instant flight points that teleport you to places you've visited before for a small fee.

Aside from how big Guild Wars 2 is, I have to also point out how utterly gorgeous the world is as well. Every new landscape you visit is luscious, beautiful, thoughtful, and seems to fit right in perfectly. The team has crafted a world that's inspiring and shows a level of quality that's top notch.

Will casual gamers be able to enjoy the game?

ArenaNet has been extremely thoughtful when it comes to content for casual gamers to enjoy. Most of the content that I saw, whether it was for level 1 characters or level 30 characters was all soloable and enjoyable. Of course, you can do just about any quest, even story quests, with a group, but since the game is focused around your story in particular, you don't need others around to have fun.

If soloing is your thing, you can also try any of the many professions in Guild Wars 2 that offer pets, to make things even easier. Since GW2 also doesn't have the need for the holy trinity (i.e. a tank, healer, and three DPS) to do dungeons, you won't have to ever worry about looking for that perfect group to do anything.

What is going to keep me interested after 6 months of raiding?

This question is really in ArenaNet's hands, but from my point of view I can already see people playing this game for a very long time, and not just for raiding. As the game is focused around your characters story, anytime you might want to switch it up you can always create a new character to get a completely different take on things. Plus, after six months of raiding you could always try out PvP, which is to be a staple of the title.

What's the unique hook that sets this game apart from other MMOs on the market or soon to come out?

To me there is a level of polish on GW2 that I haven't seen out of any MMO since World of Warcraft. The art and sound is exquisite, and everything flows quickly and in a way that makes sense. Lots of MMOs now have cutscenes and voice acting, fetch quests, and so on, but GW2 does it in a way that's interesting and lets me play how I want to. For example, many questgivers just need help, and it's up to you to decide if you want to help them by killing monsters, putting out fires, rescuing villagers, or if you just don't want to help at all you can walk away. No matter how much or little you help, you'll still get rewarded.

Will I have to have previous experience with MMO's to be able to play Guild Wars 2?

I think a little bit of experience with previous MMOs helps any new MMO player, regardless of which game they're getting in to and GW2 is no exception. There are tutorial missions for each race, but as of right now there aren't too many tutorials on how to use your abilities or how to get from one place to the next. I imagine they're going to add tutorials in at a later date, but right now there aren't any.

That said, GW2 is very welcoming and doesn't have much when it comes to death penalties. You don't lose experience or money from death, and most of the time there is a waypoint close enough to where you died that it's not too much of an issue to run back to where you were.

Should probably remove the bit about beta access. From what i've read people are not allowed to disclose that? Here's a link as proof:

Btw, we should elect our guild leader when we gather enough applicants.

The Gw2: Europe part is completely irrelevant, as EU, NA and Korean servers will have free acces with eachother, so being part in 1 of those 3 regions, one can also be for no extra costs be playing with people from the other regions. They didn't mention other servers than those.

Main reason for this guild and not 'everyone in the world join one big guild!' is because of timezones and to not have one massive clusterfuck.

the thing is, there are different timezones and also delay when you're playing with people from other parts of the world
so if the prime time for the NA is 7-10 pm it would mean past midnight in europe, which for most people is a bit late
I wouldn't call this thread irrelevant then

That and the NA GW2 guild requires hardcore players to attend to a certain amount of events at a time that does not fit Euro's at all.
To join the hardcore segment of GW2:NA you need to attend to around 5 events a week.
So untill now European hardcore players were either forced to completely change their schedule or to join the casual
Team Vanguard subguild.
Casual players can join as well and have a blast with us and other TL members.

to Steveling

I found out that putting all the pressure on one person, even if he is good at what he does, tends to burn him out quickly.
The guild structure is such that we do not need a guild leader who runs everything on his own.

There are few structured events and it's expected members simply think of what they want to do and then just ask some fellow TL members and tackle whatever you feel like tackling.

Guild master is responsible for setting up larger events and coordinating them.
These events will not be on a daily basis.
The guild master will work on guild logistics like Teamspeak and making sure we have whatever buffs and items the guild needs.

Most of the time I'll just be joining stuff other TL members set up and calling for more people to WvWvW with.

I am ultimately responsible for the guild running but not as much as GW2:NA due to it's structure.

Hope that was informative.

EDIT:Steveling, the intention is to get to know if the person applying will have a good time in our guild and to awnser any questions either of us may have.

Seems a bit strict to have a whole application and interview process. It's a guild of TL GW2 players, not a company.

I think you need to adjust the OP to accentuate that this guild isn't only for hardcore people. At the moment with its questionnaire and interview process etc. it gives a very strong hardcore impression.

We'll change the guild application form.
be it through skype or IRC, it's important that we get familiar with other guild members beforehand.

EDIT:We'll do that Firebolt, waiting for Pantythief to get online.

I also got a PM from irninja who is offering let us merge our thread with theirs.
They'll have a EU segment in the first page and the community does not need to be split up further.
We'll work on getting stuff sorted, I'll talk with Pantythief and ask Firebolt for more input.

Great to hear there's more EU players.
I went inactive in Team Legacy because of the time zones being too far apart.

All that I understand from this is that you decided that you wanted to be the gm.
Then you decided how the guild will be run.
Then you graciously decided to inform us of your decisions, rofl.

I ask you now.
Who is to say that the guild will be run the x way and not the y way?
It should be a community decision after we have enough members and an elected guild leader.

And don't get me the wrong way, I don't wanna be gm instead of you, I just want to see things run straight and avoid situations like these, where 2 people decide for the rest just because they wrote an OP.
I also want as my leader someone who was voted by the whole guild, the most accomplised and experienced and nice fellow there is in these forums. Not someone who got self-appointed.

I also understand now why each and every attempt at a tl guild in every mmo has failed. (ok,besides maplestory,xP)
The only way this is gonna work is if we do this as a community.

So,
•all tl members should be accepted, with no application needed at least for now.
•we should elect a gm when we have a sizeable amount of canditates.
•only after that, we proceed to discuss the details of the guild, as a community.

Am I wrong or right guys? You decide.

Infighting already?

The guild leader has no real powers, he can kick people like any officer will be able to.
There is no new direction for the guild to take.

With events few and far between members will have a lot more power to change things within the guild, more so than most guilds.

We are working on changing the form and it'll be easier and friendlier to casuals.
We talked about this in irc steve, if you have more questions I'd like you to ask them directly instead of making a 'the end is nigh' show here.

I asked you to join us when Pantythief and I wanted to create the thread and you declined and said you'd post when we were done, I did not expect a post like this.

The foundations are there for TL members to do their own thing, this is not a blank slate for a potential guild leader.
This is just a guild for Europeans who want to play guild wars together, let's not succomb to infighting.

I'm with Steveling, what's the point of an application form and an interview? Sure, if I want to join a huge guild, I'd be surprised if I didn't have to jump through hoops, but that's because they are established and everyone wants to join them, they can be picky and MUST be picky or everyone will join.

This guild is just a guild for TL members from EU, why not let everyone join immediately? If people do bad or are dicks, just kick them, it's not like there will be an influx of thousands of users.
