Every average Starcraft player has hosted at least one private match, specially when the custom map is not popular. It's easy to host a game, invite a few friends and start. However, many people still don't know that private matches DO NOT increase the map's popularity.
Private matches hurt map makers because it keeps their maps with low popularity while people are constantly playing them. Although I am a map maker, I'm not speaking just for myself. This is indeed happening to my iCJug 1v1+Obs maps that are not on first page because 90% of the games are private, but the same is happening to many other maps (as Mephs' Smashcraft).
So, please, whenever you host any custom map on Battle.net, always, ALWAYS click on "open to public" before start a game (even if the lobby is already full). This will make the makers happy and will help to promote the map, so more people can play and more map updates can come. Unless you really hate the map and don't want it popular, then you are allowed to not open to public.
Map makers appreciate. Thank you.

edit: If you don't believe, you can confirm this by yourself. Get a map with really low popularity, host it privately, add a computer, play it for a few minutes and check the map's popularity. No changes. Now host it again, but this time add a computer and click "open to public." The popularity of the map will increase. [tested last time on 22th July, 2011 - SC2 v1.3.5]
edit 2: Please, keep this thread active, or this will disappear forever, and no one will know about it. People must know this. This is one of the reasons why MLG maps are so low in popularity compared to the 1st page maps.

Good to know. If confirmed, this should be stickied in the Custom Maps forum.

Nice to know. But there are very good reasons on why people don't want to play with pubs.

So you're saying if I want to play a UMS by myself, it doesn't increase the popularity.
But if I play by myself, click "Open to Public" and then start the game while still alone, it will?
Or does the lobby have to gain players?
If this is true it's great to know and I feel bad for not having supported all my favorite maps as well as I could have =[

Stupid blizzard can't make a proper battlenet!!! i will keep this in mind

ow, I didn't know that. I will definately do it! Everyone should read this !

When did the open to public button get there? I always thought if you hosted a custom game people from the public could not join. Granted, I have not looked for that button since the beta. Will do this from now on.

What are you taking about? The use of that statistic is for pubs to see the probability they will get a game. If you have a map with 99% private games and it shows as highly popular, a pub may join and sit wasting his time expecting to find a game.

He is saying "open to public just before starting". Nobody will have time to join before you press start.

wow, if that's true it's simply stupidly designed by Blizzard.
Meanwhile this might help slightly, if this topic gets noticed by enough players, I really doubt it will have any bigger impact. So maybe you and fellow mapsters would be better of making blizzard aware of this issue?

I think the point is that even if you don't want to play with pubs, you can open it to public once you've filled it will all your friends.
This results in the map increasing in popularity, however you still don't have to play with pubs.

wow I had no idea. pretty stupid by bliz though imo.

The popularity system is utter shit to begin with, and as simple as it seems to press an extra button before starting a game, very few people will actually do it.
|
I will try but it doesn't matter cause the map's popularity( the ones i play) are already so popular.

Exactly.

This is why all the good 1v1 maps aren't popular. My friends and I always play all our 1v1 in private games.
Ridiculous.

did not know that so i'll do it now
|
Oh cool, thanks for the information, ill make sure to do this from now on, I just wish bnet 2.0 made sense
|
This reminds me of that map that looked really good from the title and the picture and then when you get into the game it was literally just a block of text stating the popularity system was a failure.
