If I'm trying to join a game through the public games list, yet nobody is truly playing public games, then I'm not going to have much luck am I?
The whole point of the public games list is to show games that I can join, if everyone is playing it privately then it shouldn't appear high on this list, that would just be deceiving to the player by making him think there are games he can join. It helps people find maps. You may have a map you like playing privately with friends that you or a friend found by chance. Helping it get to the top of the list will naturally make more public games available. Part of the reason some games are only played privately is because trying to wait for a public one to fill is a waste of time. If enough people do this hopefully said map would get high enough on the list to start filling public games, so that you can play it even if your friends aren't around. If you would only play it with friends then it wouldn't change much from your perspective. However, it gives the map maker more incentive to improve and make the game better for you and your friends.

Pathetic design... but thanks for the information. They should fix it.
Edit: It takes so much energy to not rage in every thread related to Bnet 2.0. How... was it designed... by people who would consider themselves professionals. Surely professionals would use common sense (not only referring to this topic).

They might eventually. However, there's been a year and it wasn't fixed yet. Meanwhile, we keep pressing the "open to public" button.
However, I know that not all the SC2 players will read this thread. If there was a way to talk to everyone...

Good to know, I'll start informing friends.

The popularity system has already destroyed the map making community. Clicking the make public box will not fix it.

This is also a main reason why sc2:bw is not on the popular list, i believe; though many people play it, creating it in private is necessary in order to set it to hardcore mode. thanks for the info OP, and good luck with your new map!

This needs to be known to more people.

thanks never even thought of this before. keep this thread alive!

I had no idea, OP. I will do this from now on. Thank you for informing us, I had no idea! I swear, if I knew, I would have been doing this from the start.
Sorry =(

Don't make me shy. lol. I added this message on icjug asking people to open to public, but it's not going to help much. Some people are still thinking that "open to public" = let strangers come in.
Some other mappers are also warning people on the loading screen, too.

Very interesting - this should almost be considered a bug IMO. Why would it not count because it was private? The map was still used. Hopefully Blizzard does the smart thing and fixes this. I bet it wouldn't even require a client-side patch.

I was always wondering why icjug maps were less popular then the crappy 1v1 obs maps. I guess this explains it haha.

Not only that, but also the fact that people would rather play a lower quality map that fills the lobby fast than stay hours waiting to find people to play a better map. Once iCJug gets popular, it will never leave the top.

As it seems majority doesn't understand the current system.
Blizzard marks maps popular if you have a high chance to join into random public custom map.
Many posters here think that map is popular if there are many matches on that map.
Popularity is clearly defined different for Blizzard than "community". I guess Blizzard's remark "popularity" is not the best one. Marking map public and then launching map is just destroying Blizzard's system.
I guess there should be 2 tabs instead of "popularity": 1=chance to join & 2=most played.
