"My experience with real-time strategy titles consists mostly of Starcraft and Starcraft II. My experience with castle defense games consists of those flash games you can play in your browser. Imagine a game where elements from both were mixed together in a blender and somehow you got a delicious peanut butter and jelly sandwich. That's what Swords and Soldiers is... a delicious peanut butter and jelly sandwich that you got from a blender." - Destructoid.com
EDIT: Swords & Soldiers will be available on Steam December 1st for around 8€ / 8$ / 6£. You will also be able to get the game on www.swordsandsoldiers.com... If you don't care about where you get it we get more net revenue if you buy it on our own site .
Who, what, where? Swords & Soldiers is a sidescrolling RTS game, or a tower offense game... Whatever description suits you best. It's available for WiiWare and Playstation Network and will soon be available on PC and Steam (planned end of October). The company that built the game is called Ronimo Games and I am one of the founders of that company. I've also been a SCBW player for a looong time, and a lot of design features in S&S are kind of inspired by SCBW's design pillars (racial differences and such). Being a longtime lurker on the TL.net boards, I'd like to present the game to y'all...
The Chinese footsoldier-rushing a unsuspecting Viking warlord, that obviously should've sent a berserker to scout
About the game Swords & Soldiers can be seen as a lighthearted take on the strategy genre. In S&S 3 factions battle against each other on a 1 dimensional sidescrolling battlefield.
In S&S there are 2 resources. You use gold to unlock and purchase units, and you use mana to cast spells. Each faction has their own unique set of spells and units. You can play as 3 factions: The Vikings, Chinese and Aztecs (Cliche I know ). Vikings are the most straightforward of the bunch, relying on brute strength, lightningbolts and snowstorms. Chinese use more trickery, such as cloning soldiers in the field with the "yin yang" spell and summoning terracotta warriors, or training fireworks shooting rocketeers. Aztecs rely on sacrificing their own units for mana, necromancers, and crushing their foes with a giant Indiana Jones inspired rolling boulder.
Using SCBW as an inspiration we tried to simplify the core gameplay to the point your typical ADD console gamer 14 year old can play the game, while still retaining strategic depth that can keep the more competetive oriented player playing for a couple of hours.

Features Swords & Soldiers contains the following:
- 30 Campaign missions for around 4-5 hours playtime
- Online multiplayer (only in PSN and PC versions)
- Skirmish battles vs AI
- Splitscreen multiplayer (only in WiiWare and PSN versions)
- Achievements/Trophies
- Full HD graphics (only in PSN and PC versions)
- Shutterglasses 3D (PSN only) and coloured glasses 3D support (PSN and PC only)
No psiblade wealding aliens saving the galaxy from insectoid invaders, but Vikings on a quest for the best barbecue sauce ever made!
I do hope some people here would appreciate the game. The game is 10 bucks on most platforms. If you're unsure, try the free demo on PSN (there will also be one for PC/Steam once that releases) or just pirate it for free, yarrr... (Just make sure you buy it if you like it after pirating ). Oh yeah, the game has ninja monkeys!!!!!11!!1one.

Skirmish is vs AI, and allows for you to change settings (starting gold/mana, handicap etc). There is also a online mode with rankings/leaderboard where you can play vs friends or let the matchmaking find you a random opponent

Looks interesting. Guess I'll go check the demo out on PSN when I have time.

Looks fun, I like the style. Will try for PC.

Looks good man, I'll dl it for sure.

I just wanted to say that I was SO HYPED for this game before it came out for WiiWare. I downloaded it as soon as it was available and I was not disappointed at all.
The gameplay is fun and simple at the surface but the strategies that a player can employ vary in depth and complexity.
I haven't turned on my Wii in a VERY, VERY long time, due to how busy I've become but my mind still dwells on playing Swords and Soldiers... =) My only wish would be to implement an online multiplayer mode. I don't have many people who would drop by and play Wii with me. So definitely check out the game and explore your options for multiplayer. Maybe the PSN version will have it.

Thanks for making a new thread. Looks like a sweet game. Any estimate for the PC/Steam release?
P.S. Your images don't fit in TL. You can upload images via TL and they'll resize to fit properly. However, since your images are so big, you might want to use a thumbnail that can be clicked to enlarge. Cheers!

When's this coming to Steam?

I have a question. I posted above but I didn't really ask this question. Is the Steam version multiplayer-enabled?
Thanks!
|
Also, as I've said above, I already own this game on WiiWare.
Do you have any plans to increase the content for the PC version?
My other question is: I watched a video about your studio a long time ago and I was very impressed with your team. At the time the video showed only 3 members working on S&S. Do you have any plans to expand for future projects? Do you have anything in the works at the moment? What language did you use to code this game? Thanks for any info you can share! =)

yep, there's multiplayer support, auto matchmaking and leaderboards.
Game is now out on steam by the way (8$): http://store.steampowered.com/app/63500/ or get it at swordsandsoldiers.com and get it for around 7$ if you fill in "sinterklaas" as discount code

This looks like it could potentially be a fun game to mod for giggles. How moddable is it, or have you given consideration to modding potential?
|
Amazingly awesome art in the game.

I saw this game on PSN a while ago and thought it looked pretty neat. Nice to know the TL community has an interest in it ^^ I may need to check it out now.

It says it requires steam so does it basically unlock the steam version?
Also, will the discount code last until Christmas? I needed to get a new credit card so I can't buy it for a week or so.

yes, it's the exact same version, and you'll get e-mailed a steamkey

actually the discount ends today (I don't know what timezone so it could be in 40 mins from now :S), I'm sure though there will be more discounts later on... Maybe a TL exclusive one? ;P
