First pic, free low-quality stream (300k)
Second pic, paid medium-quality stream (500k)
Third pic, what I get (and rest of the Koreans) (HD. dunno bitrate)
I understand the reason Gretech is capping the stream bits. The underwater lines that runs from Korea to rest of the world is seriously capped and there hasn't been line expansions in a while. All the internet connections are managed by KT, and the bandwidth to other countries is further capped if you use internet service providers other than KT.
As Gretech was suggesting (from Torch's thread), they may be preparing for HD streams, and that may mean they're currently undergoing the process of installing some servers outside of Korea, but until then, if they won't allow re-streaming or youtube, the first and second img will be the norm.
Not to be mean-spirited or anything, but I find it funny that Gretech wants to cater to the foreign audience with a paid stream that's worse than free korean streams.
Gretech may want to allow re-streams at least till they can get the HD streams going, but hey, that's just me.

I'm not complaining. I'm happy that the free stream.
Couldn't they cut a deal with ustream or a similar provider for the servers they need? Since they just stream at certain time periods and occasions this should probably be cheaper than having a full time solution. Perhaps Octoshape would work with the p2p picking up the slack?
The streams seem decent enough, I can't watch the HD stream quality from Korea in any case. Lags too much, works great from EU/US though.

Free stream looks a bit bad but whatever it's free. Besides, people will be re-streaming the high/HD anyway.
Happy with the current setup as well. Also torch already said that GOMTV is working on a free Add supported HD stream.
Thanks for this info!
Will definately be useful when deciding whether or not to fork out for the HQ stream
who cares. if you cant tell whats happening on the screen by the low quality one the HD wouldnt help you either
Maybe I'm a philistine but I'd watch the low quality over the HD to save bandwidth lol. Too bad for ISP download limits.
I don't think the paid stream looks too bad. I'm definitely going to buy it, if only for the vods.
I said this in the other thread, but I think it's fine. It's a nice middle ground where they can still make money, which hopefully will help e-sports in the long run, while still letting people watch for free.
suddenly i dont feel so sure im gonna watch GSL.
Anything except korea HD looks like utter garbage. Worse than what you'd find on the internet 5 years ago.
Isn't technology supposed to be moving forward?
Stream quality seems fine for a free stream.
What you guys are forgetting is that unit/resource counter is pretty much unrecognizable in the foreign streams.
That leaves understanding what's going on in the match completely in the hands of the casters. That's okay if you just turn the streams on and work on other stuff like me, but it'll matter to those who play this game seriously and wants to see/predict everything in the game.
Fair enough! I will definitely pay for better quality, hoping they can upgrade to the Korean quality soon
Should HD stream out of korea, and restream from somehwere else in same quality, would cost them less.
quality is fine for free-stream, i just hope there wont be too many lags
the quality of usual BW stream is in between the low & high imo, not to mention the the graphic in SC2 is 50x better than BW (which means it's easier to notice visual quality differences) so well, I wont complain. still better than nothing
The low quality stream is a bit ugly but it's ok because it's free. I hope we will be able to find low quality vod for free.
The free stream looks like when I havent cleaned my glasses for a while. Unacceptable for an event of this magnitude. The biggest tournament should have the best stream quality. Why it should be difficult to have the stream "beamed" to a location outside Korea and then redistributed in full quality from there is beyond me.
