One thing that makes LoL less appealing to me at the pro level is the number of strategies. In LoL the meta-game is stale and while there are a lot of champions, the champions all play the same set roles in a game. In Dota there is variety - you can push all-in, you can roam gank without laning, you can run global teleport strategies, you can turtle farm, you can run tri-lanes and empty lanes, there doesn't have to be a jungler, there doesn't have to be a carry, etc.

Another thing is the range of skills. There are long range skills in LoL as there are in Dota, but in Dota skills have longer range on average, and this leads to less clumping, which makes the game easier to watch.

Meta-game, as far as I know, does not mean that it is the only thing to do. It is simply the most common and popular style in the current time. There is nothing stopping a team from going all top and taking down the tower early.
There are a few roles, and all of the champions fall into these roles (carry, tank, etc), but how they do this is varied among the champions.

The vast majority of games are all the same setup because any lane setup that isnt an ap mid support ad bot with junger loses to that in lane and loses control of baron and dragon. Its stale and boring to watch.

I don't get how people can argue that LoL would require any kind of skill due to the need for teamwork, i've played World of Warcraft arena at a fairly high level for two years (a while ago) and i can say that it requires just as much teamplay and getting to know your partners as LoL, difference is WoW is slightly harder in the rest of the gameplay.

Which brings up the question, can anyone argue that WoW arena is fitting for a competitive e-sport? No, it lacks finesse and a good way to separate good players from great ones, the exact same thing can be said about LoL players, the only difference is how much you are at pace with your teammates.

This is crap, i don't care that i come out as a hater. A game like LoL to represent the e-sport scene in a country like south korea? Screw e-sport, bring back the nerd community and the games with proper gaming value.
I'm probably being ironic

It's funny that dota2 fans are saying dota is harder than LOL... It's just so bad on so many level.

Here is a counter argument : dota2 is child play compared to starcraft in term of skill...

Yes I just killed your theory. What define dota2 AND LoL is that it's team game, 5vs5. That's the only thing that set them appart from SC2 in term of skill. The difference in skill between dota and lol is just superficial as someone else said, because the real important thing in both dota and lol is the team pick / team comp / team play / team strategy. And the fact that lol (just as dota2) is a team game is the only think that makes it just watchable : if it were just a random laning phase between two guys trying their best kill minions and trade blows here and there, the game would be HELLA POOR, no matter what kind of skill you would need to perform in it - even if you can DENY or Juke.

Seriously man ? World of warcraft's arena is just shit... It's not even balanced, it's hella easy, the arena are just so small you see everything or almost everything, it last 10 min at best, it's 3vs3...

Have you played lol or any moba at all ? Map control, ward contest, there are a thousand of things that set any moba game appart from wow shitty arenas.

Think about this: What did Riot game do right and what did Blizzard do wrong in Korean scene?

Think about it carefully, and you'll find the answer that you need.

SC2 fans who constantly harp on BW for being 'outdated' have no right to call LoL casual. SC2 is casual as fuck. You dug this grave with your 'e-sports' schenanigans, now lie in it.

I tried clicking on a tournament earlier, can't remember what it was, IEM, IPL???

Anyway, I was baffled by the viewer count. It was huge. Then the stream popped up and it was this LoL game.

I really couldn't understand how this game was getting such a higher view count than SC2 tournaments. I actually sat and watched the game for several minutes, trying to find the appeal. I saw people running around using spell after spell after spell... I get the general idea of the game, but... I don't know, I don't get the appeal. Seems more like a war of clicks instead a war of thinking or strategy. It just seemed mindless. I'm sure someone will explain to me how I'm ignorant, and the deep strategy going on, just giving my first impressions. Those impressions were kind of reinforced by the casters, who were doing mostly play by play instead of analyzing the strategy going on.

I guess you could say I view LoL's popularity in much the same way I view the Backstreet Boy's popularity.

Lots of hate in this thread, especially on the last few pages. Sad. Cool to see more games than just Starcraft doing well, even if it's not my cup of tea. :D

I never realized LoL was so big. I use to watch SC2 on Justin.tv/Twitch.tv and thought those viewer numbers were huge for pro gamers. Then I saw the LoL streams on Own3d.tv

Well clearly SC2 wasn't "casual" enough to get a big enough player base in Korea. I don't see how SC2 fans are responsible for anything, when really the blame lies squarely with Blizzard. In fact SC2 fans were the first ones to actually try to spread E-Sports to the mainstream with Barcrafts and other stuff while Blizzard was busy making Battle.net 0.2, removing LAN and fighting with the E-Sports broadcasters in Korea.

if i had to guess its becuase the fanbase for BW and SC2 are essentially the same so the viewers get split between 2 games, i think if you combined SC2 and BW and treat it as one E-Sport then the numbers jump far above LoL

i was going to say something similar...its funny how the old argument is brought back but bw's seat is now taken by sc2 fanboys ^_^

i care for esports if anything (my passion for esport withered with bw)...i dont like gridiron football but being #1 sport in USA i have no problem with. same for any esport game, even if it was pong i wouldn't have problem with it. its only a result of where majority's passion lie.

But you can't treat it as one E-Sport because BW and SC2 are NOT essentially the same. Even if you did, LoL would still be above those two combined.

Yeah, as far as I could tell there aren't a whole lot of Brood War fans who hate on LoL. It's mostly SC2 and DotA fans afaik. SC2 fans dislike it because they were hoping that SC2 would become as popular as Brood War was at its peak, which hasn't really happened so they see LoL as a competition or a game that isn't worthy of SC2's "rightful place" as head of the esports kingdom. Which is understandable to an extent. There is of course a massive massive difference between being disappointed that another game is more popular than yours and just being a dick because you dislike a game. Which is what I see most SC2 fans complain about in regards to LoL.

DotA fans are more complicated to me. I think for them they just see LoL as competition for DotA2 as it does directly compete with LoL considering the two games are in the same genre and it seems highly unlikely that DotA2 will put much of a dent in LoL's growth (except maybe in China). I also think that DotA fans and players tend to be the most elitist gamers, I don't have any real facts to back this up it's just been personal experience. I don't have any ill will towards DotA btw, just saying that I think disliking LoL is pretty natural if you have a sort of elitist view towards a game you really love.

The fact of the matter is, whether we're talking about North America, Europe, or even most of Asia at this point, League of Legends has taken off as the most popular PC game and has held that position for quite some time. It isn't surprising that its competitive scene is also taking off just as quickly. It seems extremely similar to the early days of Brood War to be honest.

Except in early days of BW, Blizzard didn't put that much support into the scene. Rather, they just fix few things here and there through patches, and let the Koreans run their league without the IP right issues or anything similar to that.

You do realize you play against other people right? Its not against bots not against an environment. Do you not realize that if its easy for its easy for your opponents? And that's what makes it harder. Geez too hard of a concept too grasp for some?

Please do start playing and see how easy it really is to win. I'm sure you'll get have a 100% winrate

I've played LoL. After 20games in total, i won 17 of them and it was like taking candy from a baby. After that i stopped b'cuz it was just too much of a joke.+It's not even close to being balanced.

LOL sure you did. Whats your account name and what server? You should round up some friends and go to Korea, too pro.

But hey I won all more practice games on SC2, I'm pro too.

I had a similar experience. When I first made a LoL account, I won far more than I lost in my first thirty or so games. I doubt he's lying, but he did come to the wrong conclusion after his win streak. Riot probably just makes MMR crawl upwards more slowly when an account is new. After a while, my MMR ended up catching up to the level I was playing at, and I started running into much better opponents, and my win rate started evening out more closely to 50/50.

i guess this was bound to happen. Sc2 fans are all busy trying to grow E-Sports, while league of legends was trying to grow League of legends. well we both got what we wanted, Sc2 fans helped grow e-sports, and lol grew lol. we probly should be more greedy
