AMD's low end 6xxx cards aren't anything to be excited about. The 6790 was just released, which is stripped down 6850 that's not at all worth it's $150 price point, and the 6750 / 6770 are just recycled 5750/5770s

The coming 7xxx series cards from what I've heard are new revisions of the 6950/6970. They might shake up the higher end GPU market a bit, but without the 2gb 6950 -> flashed 6970 trick I can't see them being much of an improvement over the current generation

No it's not.

I wasn't talking about AMD rebadges, I wasn't aware that AMD needed to snoop down to the level of Nvidia to even do this. I was talking about the 6670, 6570, and 6450 which are all rumored to be on 28nm and set to debut this month.

All the HD 6770 and lower have already been in the OEM market for a while, shipping inside prebuilts. What's this information that they're going to be on 28nm?

Retail HD 6450 was paper launched already and should be the usual 40 nm from TSMC...

I was more referring to consumer BNIB products than OEM.

There's no word on the specifications of the new GPUs yet, but previous rumours have stated that they will be fabricated using TSMC's 28nm facilities.

hows this for 120 evga gtx 460
http://forums.redflagdeals.com/evga-gtx-460-768mb-768-p3-1360-tr-120-obo-1028701/

the gts 450 would be 125 with tax, also how do u know that the parts you buy aren't defected and work

Its a pain to change the setup.. That cpu + mobo deal from ncix looks real good for the price, hows this other 1 i found

Well, if you don't need a full ATX motherboard, USB3, SATA3, etc., the cheapest AM3 motherboards are around $50. So you may not be saving as much money as you might think with combos with more expensive motherboards, depending on how you look at it.

That Phenom II X4 840 is really an Athlon II X4 (note: no L3 cache, unlike the "real" Phenom II) that was named a Phenom for marketing reasons I guess, so that would be an example, so it's somewhat of a downgrade.

I'd step down the GPU before the CPU, anyway, if you just want medium/high settings. Here's a HD 4830 (more powerful than a HD 5670) for $60 before tax/etc:
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=57141&promoid=1317

If running caseless or with a salvaged case from elsewhere is not an option, you're probably going to have to cut the CPU down to a Athlon II X4 as well.

i see, so which motherboard do you suggest for med/high settings and streaming. So if i don't need to overclock, need 1 slot for graphics card and since my cpu is only quad core i won't need an expensive motherboard?i think im starting to get it.. didnt even know what a motherboard was 2 days ago xD

so basically, i just need a motherboard for my preference setup and rest is better spent on cpu

$120 cdn for a gtx 460 768mb is good. It's true that the CPU is far more important for SC2, but it's a rare exception. Both the gtx 450 or a 460 run sc2 well, but the 460 is a much faster card

Is this overpriced?

Can I run this into the HDMI port of my LED TV and still have a high quality picture?

Is the sound going to be good from this laptop into a bose surround sound system(which is connected to my TV)

And if this thing sucks, can someone recommend me a good gaming laptop thats pre-built.

hey is there much of a difference btwn i3 core 2100 hyperthread vs Anthlon II x4
black edition amd is more for overclocking and i dont think ill be needing to overclock, and the L3 cache wouldn't make much of a difference in gaming but idk about streaming.

thanks

well after playing around with more testing it seems like its a combination of a malfunctioning RAM stick and malfunctioning DIMM slots(one of the stick passes memtest completely in some of the slots but causes infinite reboot while its in others, and the other stick causing infinite reboot nomatter which slot its in), or perhaps the faulty slot damaging ram somehow? not sure if thats possible.

trying to do what you want do for $500 all-in is difficult. you have to keep cutting back to cheaper gear and in the end you're just spending good money on old technology, or end up with gear too slow for what you want. not worth it.

Hey everybody. I've been mulling over a computer build for a while now, and I've gone through asking a bunch of my friends for a lot of suggestions here and there. I started off with a reference 'sweet spot' i5 2500k, gtx4601g, etc. and a couple of my friends started with that.

First off here are the questions from the start of the thread.
+ Show Spoiler [Want a list of parts/Build? Answered Q…] +
What is your budget?

~900 -> 1k before taxes. I will be very lenient on this; the core of the build I think I'm set on.

What is your resolution?

1920x1200

What are you using it for?

Mostly gaming. Might get to do a little streaming on the side.

What is your upgrade cycle?

~2 years

When do you plan on building it?

Immediately within the week. April 21st.

Do you plan on overclocking?
No plan on overclocking.

Do you need an Operating System?

No, I don't need an OS (win7 x64 provided by school).

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

It is in my plan to have this option available.

Where are you buying your parts from?

In Canada (Waterloo / Toronto). I have access to an immediate Canada Computers, but Infonec, NCIX, Newegg, pcvillage etc. are all fine)

What I'm thinking about is being worked out here with sources:
http://www.ietherpad.com/SweetPotComp2
Would like to have the SLI option available.
All listed below for immediate purchase; within the next couple of days.

MOBO - 175 - sale - ASUS P8P67 PRO

GPU - 155 - weekly sale + mail-in rebate - Asus ENGTX460 DirectCU/2DI/1GD5 - 675Mhz, 3600Mhz ?

CPU - 220 - intel i5 2500k

PSU - 109 - Antec TruePower New -750

RAM - 48 - weekly sale - ADATA XPG Gaming Series 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL9-9-9-24

DVD combo drive - 20 - weekly sale - LG Sata - CD, DVD,+-RW,DL,

From here I have down,
CASE - ~30-40? - I have an old computer (crappier than a netbook) sitting in an Antec P180. Was going to part it out and reuse the case, while getting a cheap replacement

HDD - ~100 - Still not sure, friend suggested a Samsung Spinpoint F3, I was originally planning a Western Digital black or green or something. Suggestions here would be most welcome

All this above comes to 870 without shipping or taxes.
I am planning to pick everything up locally (purchased in store).

So I guess in the end, all I have to ask is... thumbs up? thumbs down?

Is the Ram OK? There are too many choices and insignificant benchmarks that I don't understand.

Any hard suggestions on an HDD? Was thinking to just start off with a 7200rpm 1TB drive and go from there if need be. I am flirting around the idea of an SSD.

I tried to get as informed as I can get and do all of the research before asking the thread. Thanks for reading, hope to hear what you think. Mess around in the ether pad if you like!

Smash fear, learn anything; except for spiders

@Yammiez

1600MHz RAM for gaming is a waste of money. There is very little difference between a $40 1333MHz kit and 1600MHz, see here: http://techreport.com/articles.x/20377

The MSI GTX 460 1GB Cyclone is a better deal @ $180 ($170 after promotional gift card, $145 after mail in rebate): http://ncix.com/products/?sku=54624&promoid=1317

A less expensive DVD drive is the Samsung SH-S223C, you can pricematch it down to $17: http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/223566/Samsung/SH_S223C_BEBE_OEM/

A cheap case would be the Coolermaster Elite 310 @ $36: http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/216705/COOLERMASTER/RC_310_BWN1_GP/

Pricematch down the power supply to $100 if you want to remain at 750w: http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=10370AC6497 The 650w variant for $70 ( http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=10370AC5950 ) would also be perfectly capable of handling a GTX 460 SLI setup.

Pricematch down the Core i5 2500k to $215: http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/232639/Intel/BX80623I52500K/

Either a Samsung Spinpoint F3 or Western Digital Caviar Black would be good. The Western Digital Caviar Green series is a slow drive which is meant for storage purposes only.

edit: just read that you don't plan on overclocking so it's sort of a waste to plan for SLI if you don't plan for overclocking since it is so easily done on the new processors. I highly suggest that you reconsider both. You'll want an aftermarket cooler such as the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ if you plan on overclocking. If you're not going to be overclocking, you can switch your processor to a core i5 2500 for $ 207 ( http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=12200BD4322 ). Only difference between the standard and the K is an unlocked multiplier which is used for overclocking.

SLI is also a horrible upgrade path fyi. An example would be the 8800GT released three years ago at $200 pricepoint, the GTX 460 was released almost a year ago at the $200 pricepoint as well and it outperforms a 8800GT SLI setup and at the same time, produce less heat / noise and consume less power.

It worked like a charm: + Show Spoiler +

So I bent the 12th pin from the VGA cable on both ends.
Uninstalled the drivers, both monitor and graphics card.
Windows 7 saw the monitor as Generic PnP.
I forced it to install the proper driver for my monitor.
Wouldn't let me set to 1680x1050.
Set to a average resolution that won't cause troubles.
Installed the driver for the graphics card + automatically installed some monitor driver from the same disc.
Restart.
Resolution could not be displayed: out of range.
Switched the cable with one with pin 12 unbent.
Restart.
The resolution was already set to 1680x1050 and working wonderfully.

Thank you, skyR, you are awesome!

We still have a couple of problems to tackle, though...

@Yammiez:

As skyR mentioned, leaving the option of a SLI upgrade path is not necessarily a great idea. If you don't need SLI support and are not overclocking, you could get a ~$100 motherboard (just as good for your purposes), a decent ~$60 power supply, and a i5-2x00 non-k. With the savings, you could get an SSD like you were thinking about, or maybe a better graphics card.

If you're overclocking but not wanting SLI, you can just move down to a P8P67 / P67A-UD3-level motherboard, grab an aftermarket cooler, keep the i5-2500k, and similarly step down the power supply. That probably still leaves room for an SSD, which I'd recommend.

HDD performance is much less important if you have an SSD, since you'll mostly use the HDD for large data access, at which they all perform decently.
