BTW to those who advised me to take the 750W, I did end up taking the 850W but it was only $5 more and I like the head room in case I end up going SLI. It already consumes 560W under max load too.
how did you measure 560w?

@Legatus Lanius
In terms of the GTX 560: Twin Frozr II > Windforce > DirectCU II
For the higher-end cards, the DirectCU II wins since it's a triple slot design.
@MiXyass
All you need is Microsoft Security Essentials for a firewall and anti-virus.
All the latest drivers should have been installed by NCIX and they most likely also already updated your Windows 7 with SP1.
MSI Afterburner can be used to adjust the fan speed on the graphics card.

What is your budget?
Around $1400
What is your resolution?
1280 x 1024 i'd like to have capabilities to support higher resolutions though
What are you using it for?
mainly gaming, which means running sc2 smoothly on ultra but also running programs such as Ableton Live
When do you plan on building it?
next month, aka in may
Do you plan on overclocking?
nope
Do you need an Operating System?
nope
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
nope
Where are you buying your parts from?
I'm planning on buying a prebuilt, i found one with these specs
CPU: Inten Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz 6MB S-1155 MOBO: ASUS P8H67-M LX SI INTEL B3 DDR3 S-1155 RAM: 8GB DDR3 1333MHz CL9 Kingston (2x4GB) GPU: Originially had: 1024MB XFX ATI HD6870 900M DDR5 PCI-E but i decided to upgrade it to 2048MB ASUS EAH6950 2DI2S GDDR5 PCI-E for $60 extra HDD: 2TB Seagate Barracuda5900.3 64MB SATA2, can downgrade it to some others PSU: Originally had: 1000W Energon EPS-1000 140mm but I decided to downgrade it to 750W Energon EPS-750 130mm which saves me around $50 Case: NZXT Vulcan All this for $1372 (mind you i live in Denmark 25% taxes on errting but the 25% are included in the price) here's a link http://fcomputer.dk/?show=system_show&systemlinkid=102227
I'd be glad if you could find hardware for the same price, mind you that i will also need a new case if i build my own. I just dont know whats good or what I can get for my budget, thats why im rolling with the prebuilt ATM, but you may convince me otherwise ^____^

If its made by Antec, Corsair, or Seasonic, it'll definitely run since I don't think any of them make rubbish power supplies anymore. Other brands, who knows but if its an actual 80 Plus power supply, it shouldn't have any issues.

Just to say thankyou skyR for a reply back on page 211. You recommended some software to check my temperatures and other things. My pc is working again atm so thanks very much. Afterburner comes with video capture aswell apparently which is really cool.

That's a sketchy PSU/case combo. For the same price you could get an earthwatts 430/cooler master elite instead
In general I'd stay away from any of Antec's cheap modular or "basiq" PSUs. Earthwatts is alright though

The price isn't as good but since you've got a mATX motherboard you might as well take advantage of the form factor. The small size, 0.8mm steel, and separated power supply is pretty good for efficient and quiet cooling as well. Its unbelievably tiny, actually fits full height tower coolers, and looks really attractive in person.
The power supply it comes with is an Earthwatts and you're not going to do much better for a low budget build.

oh wow woops didn't see that. Still, considering that PSU is $40 on newegg right now, there are plenty of other cases that would fit into that budget

@ skyR, Myrmidon Thank you both for your quick response and insightful input. I thought about all the advice and decided to go for broke (or just, look into actually OCing my machine after I get my hands on it). The deals you guys pointed out right off the bat are just better and cheaper. Been a little busy so I'll just use the free shipping that they're also giving.
Might hold-off on the SSD for now (I kind of want to get my hands on a working computer first!), but is there any value recommendations out there? OCZ Vertex 2 (80gb for 150, 90gb for 170) - but there has been a lot of news of bad QA from OCZ Intel x25-m (80gb for 150, 120gb for 200)

Do you have a hard drive and optical drive that you plan on reusing (note that one must be SATA)?
|
is it worth it to go from a 2500k to a 2600k processor? I don't really know much about OC or anything like that. So I wouldn't plan on me OC anything. Although I'm sure some would be quick to help me learn how to do it effectively.

It would be a great deal of the PSU wasn't complete shit. Adding in the cost of a real PSU effectively removes the combo discount

The only difference between the i5-2500k and the i7-2600k is hyperthreading. For most applications they are the same, performance wise

Wondering if this setup would be decent for SC2 / other games.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.636051
More less wondering if that is a decent setup and then what videocard you guys would suggest I get in addition to that combo.
As for needs: I want to be able to play SC2 with higher than minimum graphics that I have on my laptop atm. Also would like to be able to run Crysis 2 and other FPS games with similar graphic intensive needs.
As requested: What is your budget?
Around $1,000 more if needed.
What is your resolution?
Already have this monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236049
What are you using it for?
Gaming
When do you plan on building it?
This month
Do you plan on overclocking?
No
Do you need an Operating System?
Buying Windows 7 - not part of budget.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Probably not.
Where are you buying your parts from?
newegg or other online retailers.
Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated and thank you for everything!

Hey guys,
So I just built my computer this past Sunday and everything is working well except for some small problems with the graphics card. The card in question is an XFX HD 6950 1 GB purchased from newegg. http://www.newegg.com/product Once in the 2 days of it being operational the system crashed with a solid color screen with black vertical lines. This problem was mentioned by a few people in their feedback of the card on newegg itself. Second issue: When playing SC2 for about 45- 1 hour straight I begin to notice some occasional blurring of the screen if I am scrolling around the map rapidly. Its not big but its noticable. Is there anything I can do other than reinstall the drivers or should I just RMA the card right away?
|
Wow, fast response. Thanks, Wom, Zeke, Myrmidon, etc. So I guess that I'll wait around for more info on the bulldozer before buying. I do have an old desktop to rip basic parts out of, although I don't think that anything other than the optical drive would be worthwhile for a new machine.
