Don't post in this thread to say "gay gamers are like everyone else, why do they have a special thread?" It is something that has been posted numerous times, and this isn't the place for that discussion.
For regular posters, don't quote the trolls. |

It counts. Being in Brighton automatically makes you an honorary gay. As it happens I was also in Brighton at the weekend

I'm not misinterpreting what you said because there's not much room for misinterpretation.
"I feel like I'm the only one here who isn't the least bit interested in koreans."
is essentially saying:
Jeez, guys! I feel like I'm the only teamliquid poster who does not find guys from ______ race attractive at all! This is really weird! Usually I'm not the only one who finds _______ unattractive!

I think guys from almost any race can be attractive. Asians in general are hot, but norther europeans and australians make me blush too~

So hostile, stop looking at it like there's a hateful undertone to it. And apparently there's enough room for misinterpretation that you got "This is really weird! Usually I'm not the only one who finds _______ unattractive!" from it.
Also, Happy Birthday drshdwpuppet!

I have a difficult question for you folks. Let me see if I can make my point without this coming out wrong.
I am a very logical and science oriented individual. I have always been interested in physics, chemistry, and other sciences. I was a pre-med student until lack of funds ended that dream. Because of this, and the fact that our species contains both males and females for reproduction, it would seem to me that homosexuality is something of a... this is where it gets tricky... a genetic mental defect. I don't mean that to sound as if one person is less than another because of their attraction to one sex over the other. I think of it in terms of something like a birth defect. Like being born with webbed toes or something. I say this because we are obviously designed to reproduce sexually, and that takes a member of both sexes. For that to be altered in a human brain would seem to go against our evolution.
Please keep in mind that I am trying to approach this from an unbiased, biological point of view. I have no problem with homosexuals at all personally.
So now my question: If there were an "antidote" for people who were currently gay, and perhaps a test for pregnant women that would reveal homosexuality in utero, and then be "treated", what would the gay community think? Obviously you can really speak only for yourselves, but you can probably speculate based on people that you know. I'll refrain from inserting my own thoughts, because I'm fairly sure someone will say exactly what I'm thinking.

Don't worry, I completely understand what you're saying, and it's not offensive to me. I've actually thought about the same things, including the related question of "Would things be better if everyone were straight?"

Yeah, I would probably agree with you on that. "Defect" is a tricky term to define, but from an evolutionary perspective, I would say yes, it is a defect.
Some argue that there is an altruistic evolutionary advantage to having gays dispersed through a population, since they can help relatives care for their young without having their own. However, considering that gays throughout history have mostly striven to cover up their sexuality with families instead of embracing it and helping with the village children, I don't think that this idea holds too much water. I believe that it's just a random defect, as you say.

Eh, it would be morally sticky in the same way that any sort of "baby engineering" is. On an individual basis, I can't see anything morally wrong with turning one fetus from gay to straight. There could be a definite negative collective effect, however. Once it becomes more widespread, that could lead to an even further marginalization of those who didn't receive the treatment. In addition, parents who choose not to have the treatment could be seen as the immoral ones.
Of course, then you have the question of if the treatment became universal. Does the presence of homosexual people pose any sort of benefit to society, for instance by shaping society's general tolerance and understanding of those different to them? That's a question that I simply cannot answer.
So, yeah, it's tough. What I will say is that I can completely understand why a parent would want to change their gay child to being straight if they could, even without being homophobic at all: It might make them sad to not be able to have biological grandchildren; they might not want their child to have a hard life; they might simply not want a child whose sexual orientation they can't relate to. I certainly wouldn't judge someone harshly for taking advantage of such a treatment.
Edit: Oh, I just saw that it was also a treatment for grown homosexuals. In that case, I think that it would definitely be someone's right to have such a treatment if they so chose. I think that the only ambiguity would be in vitro treatments for the mother. That said, I think that most open homosexuals would not opt into such a treatment once they become comfortable with themselves. I know I wouldn't.
