There's also two different adapters in the box of the NH-D14. One is for the 120mm fan and the other for the 140mm fan. I'd guess that could make it problematic to buy something random to replace them.

Nah, many fans wouldn't even spin at 3.3V or even 5V, and it's not like any of those wires carry +5V or +3.3V. The red is +12V nominal from the mobo, black is ground (as usual), and yellow is the tachometric signal (to report rpm).

As you can see from the photos, they're not crossing wires or anything. See the bump? That's a resistor on the +12V line, which is what reduces the voltage seen by the fan. Problem is, I don't know what resistance value they actually use. Of course you'd need a high-power option, and someone could easily rig one of these for themselves, but yeah.

Yeah, that's more or less what I was trying to say. I know that some review sites have tested how low of voltage different fans will still spin at. I think Noctuas are supposed to be one of the better ones at lower voltages. I think LinusTechTips had some on this.

If there's some kind of standard for the input side of the fan, some standard resistor adapters should be universal as long as you're not drawing ridiculous amounts of power there. Not to mention voltage dividers or some transistor or diode or whatever else. I mean, putting something in between will just lower the voltage some, so as long as it's not too low (or higher than you'd like) it's not a problem.

Yeah, several places have startup voltage tests / charts. e.g.
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/120mm-fan-roundup-3_13.html
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/120mm-fan-roundup-4_24.html

Noctua bearings and so on are fairly decent so startup voltage is on the lower side. Then again, if "starting up" means like 400 rpm, that's not that useful anyway.

Is it feasible (not recommended, but feasible) that the system could power a GTX 650 Ti (non-boost version) through a dual molex to 6-pin adapter?

Yes, it'd be no problem for a Seasonic.

Thanks for all the replies. I've emailed Noctua and they've surprisingly offered to send the cables to me even though I live on the other side of the world.

Hello, with a single monitor set up would a i-5 4670k and a gtx 760 get 60fps in 4v4's when everyone is maxed?

Or would a i-7 4770k and a gtx 770 be better?

The reason why i ask these dumb questions are because i would mainly be playing 1v1 but my friends like to AT and play 2v2-4v4's and i would like to play on max settings and cannot currently do so on my current rig.

Thank you for any help

edit: i would also like to stream

It depends on how much you can overclock the CPU. The i5 vs. i7 question does not matter compared to that.

Regarding the graphics card, the GTX 760 will definitely be enough for every setting you might want to try at 1080p. It could theoretically always manage to do much higher than 60 fps, but it can't be supplied with data to do that by the CPU in that situation you describe, 4v4 with a lot of supply running around.

Streaming will further cut into the FPS and you can't do anything about that. You could simply try to overclock some more. There's no better CPUs for SC2 than those two you mentioned.

EDIT:

What you can do is the following:

First put the graphics settings on Ultra. Then go and mouse over every single graphic setting and read the tool tip. Dial down every setting that mentions it depends on CPU. Leave everything that says it depends on GPU at max. The end result will be pretty much what you will see playing on low settings regarding FPS numbers, but the game will still look very close to Ultra settings.

@Ropid I currently have a phenom x6 1090T 3.2ghz and a AMD 6850

also, what would be the best non water cooler to overclock my CPU without going too crazy on the price tag (for the i-5 and 760)

Thanks in advance

What Ropid said, answer is no, and performance is identical between i5 and i7

There's also little to zero benefit from going 760 to 770 for sc2 on 1920x1080 (assuming you want max settings.. for min, you stop getting gains far lower)

you want cooler advice for Haswell OC? (4670k)

4v4 maxed is like 1600 supply lol. I have an i5 4670k OC'd at 4.4GHz and an GTX 770 and I'm lucky to get around 30 FPS past the 1000 supply mark.

There's also a lot that you have to take into account. 48 supply can be either 8 thors, or 96 zerglings. 600 supply can be 100 thors, or a mix of 1200 zerglings/banelings - so the effect of supply vs performance is very approximate, at best. Many units, rather than much supply are the fps-wreckers, as well as some forms of AOE or large unit generation (think 20 brood lords firing simultaneously) making big fraction-of-a-second dips

My graphics card has been crashing. By that I mean, under load for a long time, the screen turns into a complete color and im forced to restart it manually. I use a R9 280x by Sapphire. Since it only occurs under load the games that usually causes this crash are graphically intensive games like bf4 or civ5 (for some reason)

Are there any suggestions to fix this? Other than the ones I've already done.

So far I tried these fixes and I have yet to test if it'll work (letting my pc cool down a bit for now)
-Furmark test at 100% GPU load, 1080p. 15 minutes, max temp 93c low temp 32c. (Successful)
-Chipset update
-Reinstallation of GPU driver/catalyst etc.
-Turned off AMD overdrive.

Heres my furmark result;

Don't use furmark.

You could try underclocking your VRAM

Not to sound rude, but what reason is there not to? I thought using furmark would be good for testing if it really was a defective GPU.

Also, could this be more of a driver issue? I'll try underclocking if another crash occurs.

Furmark is a power whore, it's a terrible stability test on most recent GPU's and not a very great stress test, either. Both AMD and Nvidia throttle it on many cards anyway to prevent VRM's blowing up when they are forced to draw a power load of often >1.5x what they would do at max load in a game (unlocked power to max, my 770 eats 255w in furmark at loads that game sits at below 150 on with 100% load)

I see...

Is lowering the VRAM the most viable solution for my case? Honestly thought it would just be a driver issue.
